Hello, I must totally agree with you about The AD series ! They are the best!! I own the AD8 and have enjoyed every minute with it! Spectacular views with high clarity! High Point Scientific is my goto company because of the quality of all their products and the great customer service they offer. I own many telescopes, but the magic that my AD8 produces would give Disney Imagineers a run for their money!

Great review, Michael! I certainly agree with you on the focuser. Most entry level scopes tend to cheap out here which can be frustrating for an up and coming astronomer. My XT8 has a pretty nice single speed Crayford, but dial speed would be fantastic. The only other upgrade I would recommend would be "bob's knobs" for the secondary mirror making collimation simple and easy. Keep up the good work!

Another nice thing about a 6" dob, especially with a 2" focuser, is the f8 focal ratio is really easy on eyepieces, like the 30mm superview that comes with the bigger models, at f5 and f6, there is considerable astimatism (and coma) in the outer part of the field, and at f8 it is nowhere near as bad, so you dont need to go to the big heavy panoptic, nagler and copies of those eyepieces to get decent edge performance. Superviews, Q70s and UWA80s work pretty well at f8.

Great point about how "forgiving" this mirror is on many different types of eyepieces. I've been using a 12 inch f/5 for about a year with 70 degree eyepieces and the Coma is present when I look for it but not something that bothers me during observations.

@@LateNightAstronomy it is the astigmatism in the eyepiece more than the coma that is the culprit. A well corrected eyepiece is more important than a coma corrector. A coma corrector won't fix the view in cheap eyepieces, but when used with well corrected eyepieces, stars are smaller pinpoints at the edge. You can live without it, until you fall in love with it. But for weight and size issues, many remove the paracorr when using really tall 100deg eyepieces, but the view is still better with it

6 can be a great portable option with the benefits of f/8 if you plan on getting a bigger scope in the future, but for a one scope collection yeah its hard to beat an 8 inch dob

10" beats 8" for the same reasons already cited but 6" is the best size for a beginner, not 8". 6" = Easier collimation, faster cooling time, lighter weight, focal ratio easier on eyepieces@@OMaMaRMY

Now comes with a 2 speed focuser. DT6 had a straight through finder, new one has a right angle correct image finder. New model is black instead of white. Different altitude bearings!!!, Now comes with 9mm plossl besides the 25mm and it weighs a little more.

I used to own an older version of this scope, the Hardin deep space hunter 6. It didn't have a 2" focuser but the optics were outstanding, usually the best planetary views on the field compared to the big SCTs that most club members had (though they probably weren't perfectly collimated), and for the 2005 mars opposition I bought tube rings and a 3 step ladder and used it on my orion Skyview Pro mount (eq5 class), and used it at a few outreach events and it was so sharp that elementary school kids were describing surface features. It could also easily resolve m13 and m22. I started working at OPT a year later, and hence started upgrading my gear incrementally and ended up selling that scope, which I later regretted. I did briefly have the TPO 6" f6 OTA before all my possessions were stolen out of storage, my biggest aperture scope was a CG11 on the original celestron branded losmandy G11, which I dearly miss. I now have an old orion XT6 with the plastic 1.25" focuser, it worksOK, the optics are decent, but I do miss that old DSH6, usually the GSO scopes perform a little better than the synta ones, at least back then. I also had a DBA DSO10 which was one of the GSO dob options shortly before zhumell and otherslike apertura hit the scene. I later sold that because i used it less and less after getting that c11 rig. I now have an old beat up GSO made celestron 10" star hopper, and an older 10"meade non goto sct on a wedge, which hardly gets used because it is in a huge trunk case, and the wedge on the tripod is also super heavy. It is much easier to use the dob, but neither gets used anymore since I also have since lost my van (which was loaded with gear) and got stuck in a car that is too small to fit either, and might not even fit my old C8 which is also a fork mount with a wedge, but much more manageable than the 10. I haven't really done any observing in the last few years, due to my second bout of bad luck losing the van and a huge chunk of gear.
