In this video, OrthoPro patient and lifelong cowboy Dustin gives further details about his specific type of prosthesis: hip disarticulation prosthetics.
Michael informs us that 1/2% of the 133,000 lower limb amputations performed every year in the United States have hemipulpectomy while 1% have a hip disarticulation amputation like Dustin's. The greatest difficulty in living with a hip dysarticulation is that the removal of the entire leg up to the hip joint means there are now three joints missing: the hip, knee, and ankle joints. This can be particularly restrictive to a patient with a lifestyle as active as Dustin's.
Outdoorsman and professional cattle mover Dustin was 35 years old when he lost his leg. Losing not only the leg but the three joints that allowed for active maneuvering was devastating to his lively lifestyle. OrthoPro restored those three joints and the freedom they bestow by fitting Dustin with a helix hip from Autobot, a microprocessor-controlled knee, and a dynamic response foot. These devices allow Dustin the agility and motility for his prosthesis to keep up with him and the varying terrain he encounters daily on the ranch.
Dustin attests that it's the best therapy to be able to sit on his horse without feeling that he's lost anything, but rather that his most active days are still ahead of him.

Welcome back! I'm Michael with OrthoPro. And today we're going to be visiting with our friend Dustin with regards to hip disarticulation prosthetics.
People living with hip disarticulation or hemipelvectomy amputation represent a small percentage of the total amputee population. In the United States, approximately 133,000 lower limb amputation procedures are performed yearly. Of these, approximately 1/2% have experienced a hemipulpectomy and 1% have experienced the hip disarticulation amputation.
I think I was 35 when I lost my leg. So I had two legs up to 35 and I was a pretty busy person. I mean I love hunting, I love hunting, fishing, and moving cattle. It's been--I've been doing that since I was a little kid.
A hip disarticulation means that your entire leg has been amputated through your hip joint, leaving your pelvis intact. The biggest challenge of dealing with a hip dysarticulation is the fact
that you're missing three joints that you would normally have. Your hip joint, your knee joint, and your ankle. These are three joints that are now being replaced with the prosthetic device. Dustin has a hip disarticulation prosthesis that replaces his hip with a helix hip from Autobot, and then a microprocessor-controlled knee as well as a dynamic response foot with multi-axial response. That helps him ambulate on the uneven surfaces that he has at his ranch while walking in cowboy boots.
That's been a big Improvement being able to have the freedom of my leg to move around and be comfortable. And probably some of the best therapy anybody could have got was just to be able to sit on my horse and feel like I had two legs that's not one leg.
A special thanks to Dustin for allowing us to spotlight him. This is another example of how OrthoPro helps our clients every day. I invite you to watch our other videos featuring the technology that we use to improve our clients' lives every day.
