As a former police officer, I'm sure you can relate to what I'm about to say; Anytime I had to interview small children, in an effort to set them at ease and be more relatable, I wore a tie that had all the Loony Tune characters on it. Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, etc. That way, I was more of a relatable person and not the "boogeyman" police officer they may have been expecting.

I love the fact that you "should have had a word with yourself " re when to stop buying ties. It's the one thing I that I myself can't keep from buying. It is a cheap way to make your outfits look different each time. Change of colour to suit the mood, so to speak. For some reason, I lean slightly more towards a striped rather than the plain tie. But I must admit I'm running out of room for more ties, yet I will see someone in a really nice outfit with a colour/style I do not currently own and seek something similar to add to my collection. So note to MYSELF....stop! Lol, keep it up Ash, good work

There are advantages to being and American when collecting ties. I am unlikely to run into someone from a UK regiment if I wear a regimental tie. So, I pick such from colors. One of the nicest is the red, white and blue of the British Olympic Team tie. The colors lead folks to think I am patriotic. I have in recent years added wool tartan ties to my collection. Nice with a suit or blazer. I also have about 200 ties. Nice variety to choose from. I have found Christmas ties with a nice and rather formal repeating pattern (Christmas wreaths, for example). I have a half dozen or so to wear during the season. Great video.

@@TheChapsGuide thank you. I had a question. When should one wear a suit? Is it when they are employed or have some businesses of their own or during only special occasions? Vast majority of the Chaps shy away from wearing suits everyday because they aren't attending special occasions, because they do not have jobs or business and are afraid people may think they are wealthy yet they are not? I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Thank you Mr. Ash.

Nice video Ash. I love wearing ties and I probably own about 50. It's too many really because I don't get as many opportunities as I would like to wear them, but I love having the choice and when I do wear a tie I really enjoy it. On the subject of tie width, I follow the rule that the width of the tie should be the same as the width of the jacket lapel. It doesn't have to apply in every case, of course, but if you use this as a guideline, it always looks good.
@canadafree2087
Жыл бұрын
On width, all ties must spread out from the knot, but as we look at Ash, you must consider the right proportion of tie to shirt. If you have a narrow V of shirt showing, then too wide of a tie is going to completely fill that space making your tie look like a food bib. Ash with his woven tie shows a gradual transition from shirt to tie all the way down to his jacket button.

I have c.50 ties - not a huge collection - most given to me as business presents but including, more meaningfully, school, alumni & club ties. Also, some pretty loud ones - modern art / or 'Jon Snow', you might say. Talking of wearing ties you aren't qualified for - same can happen with scarves. I was on the bus near Shoreham once and a man in the seat in front turned around and disclaimed, while putting out his hand for a handshake, "Imperial College?" "Er, no", I replied, "Jacks .." Jacks was a well-known junk shop.

A great, very informed overview! Over the years I've found myself gravitating more and more towards structured solids made of materials such as wool, linen, knitted silk (i.e. grenadines). But when I find myself choosing a patterned silk tie, I try to make sure it's matte and "chalky" in it's overall appearance, since there are two things (apart from poor fit) that can cheapen any look: bad shoes and overly shiny silks. Cheers!

A man only needs three or four ties: 1) your school tie, 2) your university tie, 3) a black tie for funerals, 4) a silver tie for weddings, and perhaps 5) a red tie if you eat tomato soup frequently. That’s it. All bases covered.

I have as of now 44 ties all vintage and except of 1 all patterned. I need to purchase some solid color ones. But I like bow ties as well and I noticed that very rarely indeed one wears them yet surprisingly they are so expensive although less material than a neck tie. Why is that?
@TheChapsGuide
3 жыл бұрын
You make a good point, I own a few bow ties, but rarely wear them these days. I suspect they are more costly due to the reduced demand, which would mean increased production costs due to economy of manufacturing scale. But I must say, a good bow-tie is very cool.

Do you have any shoes from Jones Bootmakers? How would you rate them?
@TheChapsGuide
3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your question - Jones Bootmakers are essentially a retail organisation, opposed to a substantial manufacturer of quality footwear. I understand they buy their products from a number of sources and 'badge' them as their products. As regards to quality, I think it varies dependent on the product and price-point. If you find something you like at a reasonable price - go for it. But, do not pay big money for their products, they are not a premium footwear company and certainly not in the league of the likes of Cheaney, Church, etc.

I was once told never to buy a tie as a gift for somebody else because a tie is a very personal and individual thing. Your video today exemplified exactly that. I have a quite good collection of neckties myself (but like nothing as compared to your goodself). I was struck by the fact that of all the ties that you chose to show today, none of them were anything that I would choose to wear. If I may say, your choice of ties definitely betrays your service / military background. If not that, then the club / association background. I see a necktie as a thing whereby us men have a small bit of license to display our personalities; our style and perhaps even be flamboyant or even avant-garde. I love ties and I love hats. It is lamentable that they are so out of fashion. In the city in which I currently reside, whilst wearing a tie, I have been asked "Am I going to court?" 😠 How sad is that.
