OMG! Melanie - I am soooo Thankful I watched this video before I even started my painting. I took pictures of all your supplies and tips so I can go to Michael’s and buy the rest of my supplies tomorrow. When I received my kit and looked at the canvas I was in shock at how small some of the sections are. I’ve been doing the 5diamond pictures and have been strongly disappointed because some weren’t as pictured when I bought them. So I’m trying Paint-By-Number. Thanks so much! I pray for you a speedy recovery so you can get back to work.

Melanie B’s Creative Studio just an idea buy a gloss or mate medium to finish the painting, Liquitex has one that is a gloss medium and varnish combined . @@christapaul5545 I started my first PBN today & I was already stressed bc the paint was chunky & I wasn’t sure how many drops of water to add. I kept saying “no painting outside the lines,” and I did😩. Fortunately, I remember the 1st video to do the dark colors first. Before using the 2nd color, I put a couple of drops of water (I’m waiting for the flow aide, grosso & better brushes). I noticed that the drops of water helped make the paint creamy.

Wow...I really appreciate how informative you were about so many aspects of pbn. I only wish I would have seen your video pop up in my feed sooner. I have switched to using ultra fine tip paint pens in lieu of the paint pots because I got so discouraged by the results I was getting. I am super perfectionistic and the brushes and paint were just not allowing me to complete my project in the way I desired. You can just imagine how long it would take, and the money I would spend, to buy packs and packs of paint pens to try to find a close match. My paintings never came out exactly as pictured, but at least it was clean and precise...and color is all up to the individual anyway, I suppose. Your tips are super helpful. Thank you! I appreciate you!

The one thing I wish I had done was to take pictures of it before starting. And I agree many of the brushes I've tried have bristles that are too long. I’m so thrilled for your feedback, especially after this video was ruined by the audio/music issues. 🥹 After years of brushes that were not made for paint by numbers, I designed my own sets of custom brushes. I couldn’t take it anymore, and I wanted to offer “frustration-free” products for my fellow PBN hobbyists. They sell out fast, but they are being manufactured right now. This isn’t a sales pitch 😂, but they do help with those pesky areas where long brushes just do not work! I’ll put a link in the description in case you want to take a look ☺️. Have fun with your painting adventures!!

What I love about it is the freedom paint by numbers allow me have so I can relax and not be forced to be creative. But what I also love is that you will be able to take your skills as a painter and add your own creativity to your pieces to make it your own. PBN can be so therapeutic in that way...especially for getting back into things we used to love...like baby steps. Once we do the smaller things, then you have the freedom to take it to new levels or whatever level you are comfortable with. I always encourage everyone (especially on the Facebook group) to not feel intimidated by another person’s talents or skills) but to take a few steps back from their work and if they love it, to stop working on it. A PBN is exactly what you need to put your artist’s “hat” back on and dabble again. I’m so happy to see your comment. Big hugs and encouragement from SC in the US!

I appreciated this tutorial before startig my project without doing more research. I bought liquitex flow aid and used it a few times before reading the instructions (that's on me). Even though this helpful video suggested using the flow aid instead of water, the liquitex flow aid has instructions to dilute it with water before using it. I will comment again once I have done that, but using it undiluted, I've had to go back over darker parts of my project having used it undiluted on the first round. I'm not trying to criticize this person (& I purchased everything at Michael's, so it's not like she's gotten a Perk from my purchases); just sharing my experience with the products she is suggesting. Also, I used the other product she suggested to prime the canvas first so the paint would go over easier, and that hasn't been my experience. She said do a "light coat", so maybe my coat was too light. Again, my motivation isn't to hurt this person; just to offer my experience having used her video as a trusted guide. Happy Paintng friends!

I paint totally different, so just for another perspective... I like my paint to flow, the perfect consistency is if I stir it, lift my palette knife straight out it has one smooth drip. I also paint with a 10/0 liner the vast majority of the time (I like very detailed paintings so I'm usually working with tiny spaces).. a 5/0 liner for larger spaces... and a 1/4 flat for really large spaces. I don't really "paint" with my brushes, I dip in an appropriate amount for the space I want to cover and then gently move that "ball" of paint around with the tip of the bristles to fill the space, going back for more if needed. This gives extremely good control. My HG brushes are royal crafters choice.. they are dirt cheap lol . They have wonderful "spring", are very thin and lightweight, and have nice soft grips. I have arthritis and find a wide handle is actually more painful for me to work with.

waymire01 yes, that’s why I decided to name the video “My Favorite...”, because everyone definitely has their best method. I knew many people would have lots of different ideas, and I like hearing what tips everyone has learned. I have been doing different forms of art since 1992, and then I got two art degrees, so I had to readjust things I had formally learned in order to work for this, since PBNs just seem so different than what’ve done in the past. I really lack control with the liner brushes, and because most of my newer pieces have tiny sections, I need those small tips to get right down in there. I didn’t discuss the brushes I used for the large openings, because I just totally forgot. I’ve noticed when I dilute the paint too much with Flow-Aid, it does not cover as well, so I’m working back over a section. That’s what I want to avoid. Lord knows I don’t wanna see those dang numbers & lines when I’m done. Your thoughts and tips are so welcome here!! Thank you for providing another perspective & something that might work better for another person!

@@MelanieBsCreativeStudio The important thing is to find what works for you. There is a guy who posts his PBN work online who paints entirely with toothpicks... I tried it once and it was a hard "no" for me but it works for him and his paintings are gorgeous. I did very realistic decorative painting in the past (tons of glazes, floats, and super fine detail) so I had some major adjustments in the transition to PBN as well. Fought with it.. then learned to let it be what it is. Regarding covering numbers give a wide ball gel pen a try, it's my favorite. You can draw right over the number. Dries almost instantly and doesn't get "fussy" when painted over which is an issue I've had with some paint pens, kind of balling up or getting an odd texture. The narrower ball pens score paper but might work ok on canvas.

The only water based white sharpie I can find has a medium tip-not a fine tip. I am a newbie but I imagine that u would have to use white paint with a brush for the very small areas that need it as the medium point of sharpie may be too thick in small areas. If I am correct can u please tell me what kind of white paint I would need? I imagine I can pick something up at michaels? Thank u so much for all the informative videos u have done!

Hi! First, it really doesn’t have to be a Sharpie brand, so if you can find a fine-point acrylic white paint marker that is water-based, that will do just as well. Also I like the Liquitex brand just because it’s adorable. I was a manager at Michael’s, and that’s where I got mine. I have the Liquitex Heavy Body, but it doesn’t even have to be “heavy”... just as long as you get a good, opaque white (Titanium white is my favorite.)

@yazosoyo
4 жыл бұрын
As a neewby, I’ve learned not clean the excess paint from the brush off the edge of the paint cup, it forms little dry crumbs or a ring of paint that may get into the paint. I also try to clean the edge of the cup and the cap with a swab to make sure it closes correctly, to avoid the paint to dry. I really wish I could by off your links, but those products don’t ship internationally. Maybe you can affiliate to Amazon Global? I hope you’re feeling better!

I’ll look into Amazon Global...thank you for mentioning that. You’re right about wiping the paint off on the paint pot....I don’t wipe my brush off on the side either now that I’ve figured out that it causes messiness around the paint pot & in the paint. The only time I do this now is when I’m adding Flow-Aid or Extender & after I stir. That paint is so fluid, that I haven’t had much of a problem with it.

Melanie, Thanks for the great tutorial. Question - what is the type of white marker that you used? I heard Sharpie, but there are many white sharpies out there. Some are oil based. Wouldn't that repel the paint? Please advise. Thanks again.

It is the water-based poster paint sharpie. You’re right that the oil-based repels the paint, so it is a no-no. Here is my blog with my links for tools: www.melaniegilstrap.com/post/product-links-for-my-paint-by-number-must-have-tools

Ok, so here is my advice on clear or white gesso. Even watered down, white gesso can be hard to see through in spots. You don’t need white gesso, because the texture is different. It would be better to paint on the canvas without anything if you can’t get clear gesso. I have a video about how to make it yourself, but that isn’t exactly the same as the one you can buy.

It is taking longer than usual, and it took forever before. 🙄 Thankfully I had a lot already in my stash, but I know that wait is sooo hard. Masterpiece by Numbers is here in the US, and they have actual artist licensed paintings. They ship within a few days and it takes about 7-10 to receive (during this pandemic). Love your videos!! I'm a newbie, graduated from diamond painting. I'm so glad I watched these videos before getting started. I have one question, when adding the flow and to my paints I noticed it made a couple of colors appear grainy. It says on the bottle to dilute the flow aid, but I didn't think you mentioned that. Is there anything I can do about that grainy texture? Thanks so much!!
@MelanieBsCreativeStudio
4 жыл бұрын
I’ve mentioned that in a bunch of videos, but the bottle says dilute it, because it was designed for tube acrylics...not paint pot acrylics that are thinner already. I do use it diluted under certain circumstances, but 95% of the time, I use it straight. If your paints are getting grainy, you can try a drop of diluted Flow-Aid instead, but here is my video to help show the difference in additives: kzitem.info/news/bejne/tauC24hngKaEoHo

Hi! First of all, remember the purpose of painting one of these paint by numbers is to ENJOY it! Don’t be nervous...tell yourself “it’s just paint”. Secondly, you can use a magnifying glass to be able to see the numbers bigger and more clearly. Some people use magnifying lamps that light up the numbers while magnifying them. You can start wherever it most comfortable for you. If you have black, you can start with that color. If you go over the lines a little bit, it is ok! The next color of paint will cover it. I promise you know one will ever notice it! Just breathe...and relax. You’ll love it once you start painting, and you’ll forget you why you were ever nervous. 😊

Don't you have to blend the flow aid with some water? Here is what I found: "Breaks the surface tension of the water to improve the flow and absorbency of water-based paints, markers and dyes. Improves miscibility and minimizes brush strokes. Excellent for dyeing effects on untreated canvases. Do not use Flow-Aid undiluted, but mix some medium with twenty parts ordinary tap water before mixing it with the paint. Then add a maximum of 25% as the medium lacks a binder"
@MelanieBsCreativeStudio
4 жыл бұрын
Sofia Dalle I’ve addressed this topic on many videos, but I didn’t add it to this one. Paint pot paints are completely different and have more water in them. Diluted Flow-Aid does not work the same way, because the paint does not need the extra water.
@MelanieBsCreativeStudio
4 жыл бұрын
Sofia Dalle I should also mention...I’ve been doing paint-by-numbers for almost two years, so I’ve read the bottle & have plenty of experience to say it doesn’t need to be diluted with these types of paints.

So sorry I didn’t respond sooner, but I’ve been back and forth with doctors for the past few days for COVID testing. 😳 As for varnish, I have never sealed my paintings, but you definitely can use an acrylic sealer (most of them are the spray type) to finish your paintings. I’ve read that matte acrylic sealer doesn’t change the look of the piece, and glossy gives a nice, overall shiny finish if that’s what you are looking for, so most people only seal when they are going to use glossy. I’ve done a bit of research on this subject, and almost everything I’ve read says the acrylic paints don’t need it unless you want that extra finish. I may eventually change my mind and start sealing them. I hope this helps! So sorry again for the delay, I’ve been sleeping more than I’ve been awake the past week or so. 🤦♀️

As long as you can tell where you’ve been with those light colors, (like moving left-to-right or edges first), then I think you’ll be ok. The light colors are more visible than white, but since I use that white Sharpie to cover some numbers first, and I work all over the place, I cause myself more work than I have to, because I can’t tell the difference between the painting’s white and my Sharpie’s white 🤦♀️. There are really no rules, but I’ve learned that white to start can be soooo difficult later. It is definitely just a tip and not a hard-fast rule though. 😊
