Much appreciated! My aim was to provide the final word in terms of ultra-low-profile cooler performance. This was a follow-up to my low-profile cooler shootout conducted a year earlier, which I thought would be my only take on this subject matter. But with more and more cases requiring coolers under 60mm, I decided it was time for me to return with another shootout. Given the small audience for this type of review, I doubt I'll ever make enough money off of it to cover the time I put into it, so you could say I did it for the love of science!

That IS60 is freaking amazing. I've been using it in my node 202 for a while, and I'd like to point out, if you use Ram that doesn't have heatsinks, the cooler can be mounted sideways (where part of the finstack go over the Ram sticks), which put the finstack in a vertical orientation. Since the node 202's vent is on the top, I image the vertical finstack orientation is easier to flow through, though I have not test for this.

Thank you for doing such a great video on this! The only thing I'd like to see is what happens when the IS-47K and Black Ridge have their fan flipped with your testing methodology, as simply flipping it to run as an intake seems to improve performance by a considerable margin for many (myself included, as a Black Ridge user!)

I have heard this comment from a few viewers since publication of the video. I unfortunately didn't think of making this change at the time, as fans set to "pull" typically underperform fans set to push by a small margin. But in this very unique situation, where the fan is so close to the CPU socket, perhaps it would be warranted. The truth is that I won't be repeating this shootout anytime soon, but your comment and those from others will be seen by a bunch of people, so they can try this out for themselves.

@@TheTechBuyersGuru Maybe a review for the ID-Cooling IS-60 EVO ARGB? It's the same heatsink but with the fan flipped and a slim 120mm on top. I just read that it's 18c cooler than the IS 47K on a Chinese site so it should outperform even the AXP100 Cu @ 64mm. They even did tests that the 120mm slim fan alone is hotter than the push pull by 5c so there might even be potential for a full size 120mm if you have screws that can fit the heatsink. Best of all I've seen it online here in Asia for only $45 shipped. I'd imagine it can even give the Noctua L12S a run for its money. Just FYI, I don't believe the IS-60 can fit in the Node. The official limit on that case is 56mm, and my measurements prove that ID-Cooling's claims about the height of the IS-60 are incorrect. It is not 55mm tall. It is 59mm tall. That's a VERY big difference when your case can only accept coolers up to 56mm tall! I'm not sure that the Shuriken 2 would fit either. It's 72mm tall. Cutoff for this roundup was 60mm. And if you're talking about modifying it with an aftermarket fan, yeah, that's not what this shootout was about, and it would still be over 60mm. But it is a nice free heatsink that unfortunately is going to be included with far fewer CPUs going forward. In fact, it may never appear again in a new CPU box, as AMD has emulated Intel by pulling coolers out of the package for all Zen 3 CPUs above 65W.

Great round up. About your your issues with performance on the IS-47K and the Alpenföhn Black Ridge, is likely due to fan orientation. Default stock configuration is that their fans are sucking up from the motherboard an exhausting instead of blowing down against the motherboard. Most small form factor cases that have a side air vents for the cpu cooler perform much better when you change the fan orientation to pull in air from the outside of the case and blow down against the motherboard, vrm ect. (the stock fan orientation only benefits some cases with other fans the pull air in from elsewhere and across the motherboard.)
@TheTechBuyersGuru

You may be right. A few people mentioned that they had a better experience with the Black Ridge after flipping the fan. I really can't test every cooler in every possible configuration, but I see how this could work with certain cases (including the one I used, the Shift Air), although in some cases it would be worse (like the popular SilverStone SG13).

The big winner [-]hear[/-] here is obviously AMD Stealth Wraith, especially if you go at and below 50, like for SM550. The performance of the rest isn't better enough to justify spending additional money on cooler. Which is both good and sad for me, as I have really bad temps on my Ryzen 5 3600, but I guess it isn't coolers fault. By the way - this is the better Wraith. There is different version, which is with 7 blades, instead of this one with 5 and this is the better performer.

I realize the point of this round-up was ultra low profile coolers, but the ID Cooling IS-60 appears to be competitive even with taller coolers. It would be nice to see a direct comparison between it and the Noctua LS-12S, because between your two reviews it is hard to tell which is better in a slightly less height constrained situation. It doesn't seem like there are any other reviews that directly compare these two heatsinks, so I am sure I am not the only one who would be interested in seeing how they stack up against one another. Maybe another standard low-profile round-up is in order, but simply including the IS-60 and maybe the AXP-100CU.

This looks to be the way I'm going to go with my Z490i mini itx MSI mobo. That thing is TIGHT around the socket - both the IS-60 and the AXP-100 do not fit (due to heatsink issues or memory heights - I use Teamgroup Vulcan at 33mm). The Blackridge looks to fit with no modifications required from pictures I have seen. The only problem is that it obscures the first PCI slot so you'll need to be using a riser cable to fit a Gfx card in, unless you are using an ATX mobo. So there we go, the ONLY cooler (other than the 92mm L9A/I like coolers) that fit in the MSI Z490i (and others probably too) in a case which requires a 59mm or less cooler height is the Blackridge. Absolutely fantastic video, real in depth and informational. I wanted to ask though, have you seen the new ID cooling IS-60 EVO ARGB (went up on Amazon recently), it is basically the IS-47k, BUT with a fan up top. I wonder between that and the normal IS-60 which one would win. New low-profile cpu king? Is also only $42!

Yes, the IS-60 EVO is a great concept: amzn.to/2M2HngZ It had actually just been announced when I was making this video, but I didn't feel too bad about it not yet being available, because at 64mm tall, it wouldn't have made the cut for this product category (under 60mm). At that height, you have to start looking at coolers like the Noctua NH-L12S: amzn.to/3qS5oWI It's 70mm tall and in my roundup in 2019 of coolers 65mm-82mm, it was the clear winner: kzitem.info/news/bejne/z65px6yEoIyka4o From my knowledge of the SFF case industry, 60mm is a pretty common cutoff, and then after that it's typically under 85mm or so. If you're actually limited to exactly 65mm, then the IS-60 Evo is probably a good choice, but there are much better choices that are just slightly taller. I also really like the be quiet! Shadow Rock LP at 75mm tall: click.linksynergy.com/deeplink?id=WAzU8cLhuCU&mid=44583&murl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.newegg.com%2Fbe-quiet-shadow-rock-lp-bk002%2Fp%2F13C-001F-00006%3FDescription%3Dbe%2520quiet%21%2520Shadow%2520Rock%2520LP%26cm_re%3Dbe_quiet%21%2520Shadow%2520Rock%2520LP-_-9SIA68V2TR2312-_-Product%26quicklink%3Dtrue I don't have plans to test the IS-60 Evo at the moment, but my hunch is that it would not be as good as the other two coolers I mentioned above.

Great video. Video request: I think this will be a hit, if you didn't already plan it, could you do some testing on how the RTX 3080/3090 will affect case and different CPU configurations? So many questions how the top fan design will impact so many different case configurations. I currently have a top mounted 360mm radiator and I'm worried how much the heat output will affect my CPU temps. TIA!

This is an interesting idea, but I won't be purchasing a Founders Edition 3080/3090 for testing. I don't get free GPUs, and for my testing purposes, I only buy EVGA models. They will use more traditional designs, and honestly, these designs from EVGA and others will be used by the vast majority of enthusiasts. So while Nvidia is going to seed FE cards to big-name reviewers, the thermal results from those will be pretty meaningless to the vast majority of users. Put another way, if there were tests done of the FE cards and how they impact thermals in specific case configurations, I'm not sure it will be that helpful to most people, because most people do not buy direct from Nvidia.

Another informative video Ari - gotta say I was a bit disappointed with the Alpenfohn at full tilt - I'd kind of thought it'd cope better at higher rpm than it did yet it was quite noisy at this level - performance could be improved with a Noctua slim fan attached instead (either 92mm or 120mm) - if it'd fit. I'd always had a softspot for it before this shootout due to its smart black design & 6- coolpipes, but now the ID IS-60 looks preferable. - Wonder how it would fare head to head against the bigger L-12S ?
@TheTechBuyersGuru
4 жыл бұрын
I think the L12S would be well ahead of the IS-60, based on how soundly it beat other coolers that were similar to the IS-60 in design but quite a bit taller, in particular the be quiet! Shadow Rock LP, which uses a full-size 120mm fan, not a slim fan. But the reason I specifically did not do that comparison is because there is a clear breakpoint in the market, where many cases need coolers under 47mm, many need them under 60mm, and some can take coolers under 82mm, and people should not cross-shop these. You use the biggest class of cooler you can fit. That's what I showed here. The Black Ridge is quite an interesting design, literally being as big as a cooler could possibly be and still be under 47mm (and have any RAM in the system at all!). Interestingly, Alpenfohn suggests another configuration in the manual with a 120mm slim fan mounted underneath in place of the buzzy 92mm, but unfortunately this is impossible, and they should probably remove that from the manual. They specify needing "Very Low Profile" RAM, but this hasn't been manufactured since the DDR3 era. I should know, I have some, namely Samsung's "Magic RAM", which was about half the height of Vengeance LPX. Now if you're building an ancient PC that uses DDR3 RAM, the Black Ridge's 120mm undermount option may be relevant, otherwise, you are simply pushing up against the limits of cooler design, and should probably use a bigger case if you need more cooling. And back then, CPUs didn't run nearly as hot, as the most cores you'd have on a DDR3 ITX machine would be four!

I think this could've been split into two videos, one with the 60mm height limit, one with 48mm height limit. And I'd add the axp-90 full copper to the 48mm bracket. With two videos you can set more time aside to each cooler. I'd like to see how they perform with all the fans being upgraded to their respective noctua variants as noctua fan swaps are what most people do anyways. Glad you set up this nice combo! I asked Noctua why they don't sell it at retail, and they said the CPU cooling benefit just isn't big enough and people might be concerned about the benchmarks, so they wouldn't pay more for the NF-A9. As you saw in my benchmarks, the CPU temp was around the same, but that's the CRITICAL flaw in all other CPU cooler reviews. You have to look at the results in the context of noise, and you should also consider chipset and VRM temps. In that regard, the NF-A9 pulls way ahead, giving slightly better CPU cooling, much better VRM/Chipset cooling, and a lower dB level, especially at maximum RPM. Win, win, win. Too bad Noctua and all other manufacturers still cater to outdated CPU cooler testing!

Go for the L12S with a 25mm fan if you're on a budget, but honestly, the NF-A12x15 - amzn.to/2FIVEfp - was just as good if not better in my radiator fan testing - kzitem.info/news/bejne/uGiQz6dui5yUi20 - as many 25mm-thick fans, and will provide more airflow between it and the PSU.

So, I plan on building an ITX PC with the Dr. Zaber Sentry 2.0 Case very soon. And from what I read, this case only has a max of 47mm's of Clearance for CPU Coolers. The CPU that I plan on going with is the Ryzen 9 5950X, which has a TDP of 105W. Does that technically mean that the only viable option out of all of these would be the IS-47K? Considering the fact that it can support a maximum TDP of 130W; Unlike the Black Ridge which can only support up to 95W? I'm just trying to find the absolute strongest CPU Cooler I can that will fit in the Dr. Zaber Sentry 2.0 before I make my final call on which one to go with. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks for the informative video!

OK, first off, you should realize you are absolutely pushing the limit of what that case and any coolers that would fit in it could do. Would I build this system with a 5950X? To put it simply, no. The 5950X will pull well over 150W under load. But if you feel strongly about it, then you want to go with the Black Ridge, which is more powerful than the IS-47K, because TDP ratings have become absolutely meaningless. The CPU manufacturers are lying about the TDP, and the cooler manufacturers are simply slapping on whatever rating they feel like using.

Hey Ari! Finally got around to watching this vid. Just a question regarding the IS-47K; did you test the cooler out using the Noctua backplate? From what I read on reddit and SFF Network, it seems that the cooler performs badly due to not having enough mounting pressure. A few users who tried using the Noctua backplate reported better temps, up to about 10C in difference compared to using the stock backplate. If you still have the cooler, would you be able to confirm this claim?
@TheTechBuyersGuru
4 жыл бұрын
I've seen those claims, and I think they're wrong. 10C is impossible. That would put it ahead of the IS-60. And anyway, the Black Ridge quite literally uses the EXACT same mounting system, and performs much better. The issue is with the design of the IS-47K. It is not well optimized for the size and density of its heatsink, nor for the fact that a lot of the heatsink is over the I/O ports, which cuts down on airflow a lot. And I should note, ID-Cooling has not disputed my results.
@arieltakom
4 жыл бұрын
@@TheTechBuyersGuru I agree that 10C drop is impossible based on what you said, but is there any possibility for the temps to drop around 5C? Because if yes, that would make the IS-47K a cheaper alternative to the Blackridge, at least where I'm from. But regardless of that, it is pretty clear that at stock, the IS-47K simply isn't as good as the Blackridge. At least I can now be content with my Noctua NH-L12S purchase. Been thinking that I might have made a mistake buying this one if the IS-47K performs well simply due to the price.

Oh, yeah, if you have an L12S, it's no comparison. But like I said in the video, there is a place for different size coolers in the market. If you have 47mm of clearance, you're not going to be using an L12S. And I personally don't even run the L12S in my Phanteks ITX system with 82mm of clearance because I want to use taller RAM, which means I'm running the inferior Scythe Big Shuriken 3, which is offset away from the RAM (just like the IS-47K). This definitely sacrifices performance in exchange for better compatibility. You just have to pick and choose your compromise when it comes to SFF cooling. At this point, I have virtually every low-profile heatsink in my stable, and yet I'm not personally running any of the coolers I've declared winners, other than the L9i, which I use in my SilverStone ML10 case that has just 43mm of clearance. In my system with 47mm of clearance, I'm using a SilverStone AR11 (nearly identical to the Thermalright AXP-90), and like I said, in my air-cooled high-end AMD rig, I have the Big Shuriken 3. So even when a cooler offers the best overall performance, you don't necessarily need to go with that model if you have other priorities besides the lowest temps, because many other coolers will still work well enough.

@@TheTechBuyersGuru In the FormD T1, it's possible to put the case into a dual slot config and then use the risers to give space between the flow-through portion of the GPU and the PSU, which should be enough clearance for some airflow. That could then feed directly into the top exhaust (if you use the flipped orientation). In other words, I think if you are careful and undervolt you could run a 3080 in there.

The Tech Buyer's Guru: the reason I asked is that I have a 3950x build in an SGPC K39 4.3L case w/Black Ridge & Noctua 92mm Chromax fan. Currently can only run at Eco Mode (65W TDP) but I’m switching to a Captain S v6 7.3L case which allows for max cpu cooler height of 72mm. Since I have the Black Ridge already, I can put my Noctua NF-a12x25 on top to knock down temps even further so I can run @ 130W TDP with PBO :)

Yes, that will be a great cooler with an NF-A12x25 on top. It's a decent cooler in stock form, about as good as you can get at 47mm, but no one should fool themselves into thinking that a 47mm-tall cooler is every going to perform like a larger cooler. There's no getting around the serious limitations on airflow and heatsink displacement. A lot of people wanted me to review the Cryorig C7 and Thermalright AXP90. Both are 47mm tall and have much smaller heatsinks than the Black Ridge. There's no miracle happening with those coolers. They would be much weaker.

Hm... If it is possible, might you be able to compare the performance between copper and aluminium heatsinks? Such as the AXP-100 Full Copper vs the AXP-100 Alu or Cryorig C7 Cu vs Cryorig C7 Alu As I understand, Initially copper has better performance than Aluminium thanks to its higher thermal capacity. However, once that thermal capacity is maxed out, it will perform no better than aluminium. This phenomena is present in watercoolers as water has a high thermal capacity. However I have not seen any videos on copper vs. aluminium heatsinks yet. I personally think it's a pretty cool experiment to do, seeing how the temperature of aluminium vs copper changes over time.

Interesting concept. I don't think I'll be able to fit this one in, and based on what I saw in this review, the cost of copper is not going to be justified. Better cooler design wins out. Also, the C7 is just too small for copper to make a difference. Keep in mind that it's much smaller than the Shuriken 2 that I tested. A lot of people wanted to see the C7 in this review, but it wasn't going to work any miracles. It's not better than the larger Shuriken 2.

Can a quieter Noctua fan be used on the ThermalRight even thicker if there’s room?

The Thermalright cooler uses an unusual 100mm fan size. But it includes an adapter for use with 120mm fans. Doing so may cause compatibility issues with other components, like motherboard heatsinks. Just a chance you'd have to take. I'd recommend that you use the Noctua NF-A12x25 fan: amzn.to/3qXRRge But take note, this puts the cooler at 68mm tall, and at that point you have to start looking at far superior heatsinks, like the Noctua NH-L12S: amzn.to/36fewNb It's almost certainly better at 70mm tall than an AXP-100R with a taller fan standing 68mm tall, and less than half the price.
