I appreciate this type of lens because I'm nowhere near committed enough to ultrawides or zooms to pay for a G-master level lens in that focal length range

Thank you. I’m looking to add the new 16-25/2.8 G to my A7CR travel kit which already includes the 24-50/2.8 G. It will replace my Sigma 16-28/2.8 DG DN. That lens is internal focusing but uses 72mm filters. I got that for my original A7C that I’ve traded up from. Hope to order it soon. Take care.

I have the Sony A7Siii and the Sony A74, and do both photo and video. I have the Sony 50mm f1.4 GM lens, which I love (other than for wildlife, I have only been using primes). For lightweight travel, I am contemplating this as well as the 24-50mm f2.8 G. You can pretty much get both of these new Sony G lens for about the price of either the Sony 16-35mm F2.8 GMii or the Sony 24-70mm F2.8 GM ii, as you mentioned, so a good value. I don't really want the F4 for this range, and the 67mm filter thread idea (the GMs need an 82mm filter). I like the lightweight travel idea with these new G lenses. I don't think I am going to the Cii or CR anytime soon. I used to own the A7C and didn't care for the EVF and thought it was still too small in the hand. I think it will look good and be a lightweight option for the full frame, full size cameras.

As you have the 16-35G PZ, were you missing that at all on your trip? The PZ is lighter, smaller, and all internal with more reach. The 2.8 is the only advantage but could you speak more to it? You really only mentioned the filter size difference. Also, would you rather have bother the 16-25/24-50 combo or just the 16-35 which will give you that 50mm reach with super35?

I actually cut a bit where I talked about how the 25 at f/2.8 gives a similar look to a 35mm at f/4 when in S35 crop mode. But yes, 2.8 is the main selling point there. Double the light gathering and for photography, that’s super helpful. Both are obviously great options.

I’m gonna need a longer review of this 16-25mm to the 16-35mm GM2 . I have a student discount from B&H that allows me to get the GM2 for $1950 , but still waiting for the edu price for the 16-25mm , I’m thinking it will be about $1050 . Trying to see what’s the justified price for a hobbiest that does paid gigs about 1 or 2 times every couple months . I have a Sony A7IV. Been looking for a good wide angle zoom lens .

Cute kids. I happened to be out yesterday with the A7CR. And really had difficulty seeing the screen and evf in bright sun. I would be interested in the image quality of the 16-25mm compared to the 16-35mm PZ, which I already have, and the 24-50mm compared to the 24mm G and 50mm G compact lenses.

How would you compare this to the sigma 10-18mm 2.8 for Apsc but for full frame? Wouldn’t that cover the same range as this 16-25 but even more on the wide end and smaller in size?

Your perception of "small & compact" is very strange... I suggest you some lenses that are really SMALL & COMPACT: --> Sony Zeiss 35mm F2.8 - Sony Zeiss 55 mm F1.8 - Sigma 35mm F2, etc. etc

I want to see a review of a sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 vs the new 16-25mm f2.8 .

The Sigma is twice the weight. Literally. I have the Sigma 14-24, and I would get the Sony over it. That extra 2mm on the wide end is noticable, but not worth twice the weight. If you want really wide, I would suggest looking at the 12-24 F4. I plan on selling my sigma and getting one of the 2 Sony's mentioned above.

YAY!..been waiting for this one..Thank you Benji for the awesome insight!....never had a lens in this range and or "category"..16-28-35 base lenses..etc so for me personally I like that it stops at 25mm...this is really interesting and definitely worth a look for sure! both for stills and video with the updated Breathing Compensation, the light form factor etc..etc looks like it will be my first lens in this category..lol.

Are you using a step up ring? And which filter are you using, CPL?

What's your opinion on this lens vs the sigma 14-24mm? Seems like thw sigma provides more versatility by sacrificing size. Kind of torn between the two not having any ultrawides?

Does the Sigma have filter threads? I’d assume the front element would be bulbous
@LacrosseMan0428

@benjhaisch It does not, and you are correct the front lens is bulbous. They did add a slot in the back of the lens to add nd card filters, but these are not as good as front mount lens filters.
