@@HangingPawns I find the French to be sharper, wackier and more double-edged than the Caro-Kann, it is like my own little mad world of the Winawer that I know well and White players can be frustrated at due to how unique these positions are. I play the french myself and would consider 3...Nf6 in the Tarrasch as kind of outdated. One can say it's the mainline, because at previous times it was an almost automatic move and Black just asks to suffer big time. I would say nowadays people at minimum start notice that 3...c5 is just equal for Black (in the Masters database on Lichess it is already most played). White's knight doesn't have big impact in the centre, White's queen is blocked and if White goes for the main move 4.exd5, Black can just take back with the queen as White misses the typical tempo move Nc3. But yes, if Black plays 3...Nf6, White should have a fun game. - sorry, had to defend the FRENCH DEFENSE!

c5 is perhaps better. But if you don't know IQP positions well it can be very tough for black.

Reading this immediately made me want to ask you what you think of Mauricio Flores Rios: Chess Structures, A Grandmaster Guide. I'm currently working my way through it, at least through the structures that are relevant to me. But I'd much rather know which tactics books you've used at the various Elo levels - perhaps there could be a video on this at some point? I'm finding it very difficult to find the “right” ones.

@@HangingPawns P.S. Check out Pavel Simacek - Baadur Jobava (2013, Legnica). It shows how dangerous the IQP can be in the Tarrasch as White lacks his e-pawn. And of course Black can avoid the IQP by taking back on d5 with the queen. But the game might still be interesting, as you play it from White's perpective and might face the IQP in the Tarrasch.

Hello! I've just finished learning the French Defense, thanks to your guidance. Now, I'm wondering about my approach when facing 1.d4. If I play 1...e6, I know that 33% of players might respond with 2.e4, allowing me to transition into the French Defense, which I'm comfortable with. However, if my opponent plays 2.c4 instead, can I then play 2...d5 and continue with the Queen's Gambit Declined variation? Or is there a better approach I should consider? I'm still learning how to handle 1.d4 openings, and I have a tournament coming up in a week.
