That's one of my daddy's favorite beans to cook. He used the ham and the bone in beans. He never used chicken broth. He told me that there was more than enough flavor in the meat and the bone. I never argued with him about that. I miss my daddy dearly. He passed away when I was 16 years old back in April of 1996. I still make the occasional pot of beans (any kind of combination of beans) and have fond memories of my daddy. Thank you for sharing your version of bean soup. ♥️

@@CookingwithShotgunRed I do along with interesting combination of food. My mom is from Mexico and my daddy is from Missouri. So, I grew up with meals that included tortillas, rice, salsa, mole, etc paired along with foods like meatloaf, pot roast, etc. I thought everyone ate the same way for the longest time until I went to a friend's house for dinner and was wondering where the tortillas and salsa were. Myself and two cousins look like Spaniards outta the rest of my mom's side of the family (the three of us have white dads and our moms are Mexican).

Since my mother's passing I often come to the tube for a refresher on some dishes...this recipe is a lot like my mother's, except she loved her pressure cooker (I'm afraid of them so I've never used one without her supervision). It seems like every other video I've watched has the overnight soak or boil 2 minutes and soak an hour, glad to get verification that's not necessary! On my way to the kitchen to cook up my beans and use the spiral ham bone in the freezer just beggin' to be cooked since Christmas!😅 Thank you Ladies, I love your lighthearted attitudes! 💌👩🦳

I really enjoy navy bean soup I'm old and live alone now but somehow I still seem to cook for a big crowd of friends and family. I've tried freezing extra food just don't seem to ever eat it from the freezer. I'm very lucky to have friends/family that own a vehicle repair shop that are willing to take the extra food for lunches . I have my favorite brands of beans but was shopping at a Mennonite bulk food county store bought big bag of no brand navy beans . They don't soften easy so I soak them overnight then slow cook until tender I'll be glad when there gone .

@@richardtrowell8812 Sorry that i didn't answer sooner. As for the ketchup question there is no set amount. I just do it to taste. If some people don't like ketchup, I will just add it to my own bowl. I also do this with vegetable soup because I like a little sweetness and tang to it.
