00:00: The key to your 20s is constant learning and keeping an open mind. Life should be on two tracks: adventurous exploration and focused skill-building. 01:02: Avoid being one-track (focused solely on career) or five-track (scatterbrained). Find balance between skill specialization and varied experiences. 02:23: Learning languages, like through Babbel, cultivates discipline and competence, enabling meaningful interactions in different cultures. 03:19: Embrace a "two-track mind" in your twenties: be open to experiences while focusing on a core passion, funneling various experiences toward skill development. 05:09: Maintain excitement by studying what aligns with your passion; combine adventure and skill growth for a fulfilling twenties. 06:18: Aim to have learned, experienced, and discovered your direction by your 30th birthday, ready to take your pursuits to the next level.

Like isn't it best to only nourish one language instead of five and making a jumble that prevents you from writing as best as you possibly could? I speak Serbian and English and I know that when I watch a video in English, I think in English for the following hours and if something occurs to me to write, it always comes out in English. And needless to say I'm better at writing in Serbian 'cause that's what I'm exposed to more. If you are multilingual and such a good writer at the same time, then I guess you're quite unique, right?

At age 20-22 I was burnt out and severely depressed with the drive for a degree, because my parents were indeed pushing it and I felt it was the way and only the way in life. Luckily I came out of that, managed to heal my mind and realised the importance of real skills. Studying is not the same as learning, and it's also important to discover and understand yourself. Currently teaching myself Japanese (great timing for the Babbel sponsor!) and got a part time job, all the while (finally) chasing after something I've always wanted to do. 32. Struggled throughout my teens and 20s to strive through a toxic environment and learned helplessness enabled by parental gaslighting. Never excelled at sports because I was manipulated to think “I wasn’t born for it”. Never had a long-standing relationship because I was convinced with the false idea that I wasn’t “good enough”. Never won any competitions or contests because I never even tried to. At age 28, after the straw that broke the camel’s back, I took the chance to stop playing victim and break the chains that bound me thanks to the only skill I have been ever consistent in: Japanese. I now live in Japan, slowly healing my wounds and learning new things little by little. I have been practicing turntable scratch mixing and started my a career from scratch with my English, Spanish and Japanese language skills as foundations. Sports may take a while, but as long as I’m still able to keep up, I will never give up. Even though I have always struggled with self discipline, life in Japan has helped me temper that, because of the many rules and norms this culture is famous for. Thank you Robert, your works have opened my eyes and taught me to keep my mind open and keep learning the best I can.

Been learning game dev for the last 4 years, and finally making a large scale project in the game engine that I started building last year. Super happy with how my life is going now. Everything you say is true. Two-track is a sweet spot that took me 6 years of my life to settle on to find happiness. This is reminiscent of a video of when Joe Rogan interviewed Jordan Peterson (episode #1208). Peterson said the following at 2:04:32 : "You should push yourself beyond the limits of tolerance in your twenties to find out where it is. How much can you work? How disciplined can you become? Can you work 12 hours a day? Can you work 8 hours a day? Can you work 3 hours a day? Like flat out, where is your limit? How much work can you do, and how much socialisation? You should find out. Push yourself past [the limit], then back off to the point where it is optimally sustainable...It is good to think about that as a goal to find out where your limitations are in your twenties so that you can hit that edge to sustain yourself across the decades...Some discipline along with the fun is a good idea." I would adopt what Peterson said in that interview. Moreover, contrary to what Greene seems to suggest, my view is that there is nothing wrong with pursuing a career in law or banking, particularly when it is a genuine ambition of yours. In fact, you can learn a lot of transferable skills in these professions that are applicable and useful in life. People skills, problem solving, time management, and analytical abilities, but to mention a few. It is therefore wrong to suggest that these professions are mind-numbing or that they give you a closed-sighted view of the world. However, where Greene and I may be in agreement is that it is important to pursue your desired career path, but equally making sure that you are adequately keeping yourself (body and soul) healthy and making sure that you have a social life. Of course, work/career does not equate to your entire life. Perhaps this is only so if your aim is to be at the absolute top in your chosen field, but that only applies to a handful of minorities. Even if you are not aiming for the absolute top, I think a lot of people still mistake their work to be their sole purpose in life, which is a detrimental attitude to espouse. But if you can balance your career with other interests (Greene may term this as 'adventure'), then you may find that your life is far more enriched.

I am one of the aimless multi-tracking fools that at this point have no wealth and no skillset. I am 36 and exhausted from the inertia of failure with no hope of ever finding a way to exist within this world, but finally coming to face that terrifying realization. If you are young and reading this, please hear Robert’s words - it can save your life

You put it into words what I was thinking myself. I'm 20 atm, with quite an uncertain future ahead of me because I finally decided not to take the academic route, but the lack of disciplinary structure to my life feels like I can run down all 5 paths at once. I think youtubers and tech entrepreneurs can often glamorize this 5 path mentality that you talk about, ("drop out and start a business and become really successful" type thing) but there is really quite a risky element to it, being left with nothing solid to build the rest of your life with. Idk why this feels preachy, just voicing my thanks. Also the 'learn' part was great, intuitively i know I shouldn't be pursuing things I'm not truly interested in, and the fact of burnout and that you can learn much faster if you actually care makes alot of sense to me.
@sp123
Жыл бұрын
a lot of these 5 path people come from well to do families where they dont need a traditional education because they went to expensive boarding schools and have vast social networks to get things done. The average person from a regular family needs to go to college to build stability a young age so they can have the freedom to do what they want later. What Robert doesn't understand is most suffering comes from people who didn't do the right things at a young age like getting a degree in a stable field and now they have to do it older with less energy, more responsibility, and stress.

Honestly, I don't want to because i feel like I can do so much more if I just learn a high income skill in those 4 years instead of getting a bachelor's degree. These decisive moments are what make life interesting, so we just gotta be risky sometimes.

I'm also incredibly lucky for having found my passion during the covid lock down which is 3d art and movies, it's been 2 years since then and I'm been loving it. I love working out, listening to music and enjoy spending time on the PC. I worked a few jobs in my 20s like exterior painting, working in a bar/barback, retail and fast food food when I was young. Was also a dj for a whil3 and have a diploma in Music Production + HR. Still having a tough time really sticking with something . I like djing and producing music , I also like working out and wouldnt mind owning my own gym or my own business somehow. Not too sure how to start that though. I do currently have a small business online that I make video game currency with and sell it but I would need to scale that way bigger. A video for your 30s would be nice too Robert. People struggling to find that one thing in their 20s. I at times have had a hard time figuring out who I am and what I want to do. I enjoyed world of warcraft as a kid which led into becoming a great healer in the game... I just couldnt seem to stick with it though because I got afraid of commitment and gave it up. Was also young.. But still. Should have stuck with something. I also can talk myself out of anything because I can see so many different sides of each thing making it difficult.

Would you mind talking about depression? How does it affect our lives? Why does it make us feel incapable (of working, living or socializing)? What happened if we don't treat it or if its symptoms extend for a long time? Does it have a definite cure? What to do? I love your content and the way it interacts with us directly and clearly.
@jaimediez

Hello brother/sister If you are dealing with drepressing feelings i recommend to truly believe that it is not real. I know it sounds like something that doesn't make sense, and probably would remind you of Andrew Tate and all that sigma male thing, but I think we all agree that the mind is the most powerful thing we have. Realise that there are people in this planet that can completely and utterly convince themselves that they are cats, that they can fly or that they live in a computer simulation. Imagine if you absolutely convinced yourself that depression isn't real and that it cannot affect you, that those feelings are there, but that they can vanish in a blink, curing your brain. Imagine that you could competely convince yourself that you can achieve absolutely everything you put your mind to, and that your potential is limitless, that any kind of depressing feeling can't stop you and that anything of that is real. We live in times where our mind is the only enemy we have, and I truly believe, that thinking that depression is a clinical disease that can only be treated with chemicals or therapy, and that you can't get over it by yourself is a limitant belief, so, why would you want to believe it then? Why would you want to make your mind your enemy? I understand that there are extreme cases like PTSD or other mental disorders caused by traumatic experiences, but usually people with depression think that their life is sad because they have depression; when it is the other way round: You feel depressed because your life does not fulfill you. We all have bad times, but remember that you are not alone, that there are people in this world that have absolutely anything and that would exchange lives with you in less than a second for what you have. Look for meaning, be humble and appreciate the blessings you have been given, believe that you can achieve absolutely everything and that nobody is going to give it to you; realise that everything that happens to you is your absolute fault, and that depression isn't real. Be pissed off instead, and use it as unlimited motivation to achieve your goals. This approach to life saved me, and I hope it can help you in any way, or maybe just reconsider some things. Thanks for reading, and may God bless you. Have a nice day.

@@jaimediez I don't really believe in pretending that the depression isn't there. But then again, the process of actively living for life rather than recoiling from depression because of depression for depression, isn't a terrible thought. It is just a bit more difficult when you are the one feeling the absolute lack in purpose towards socialising, living, working, growing, etc. when you can't find anything to make your time feel meaningful, it becomes very difficult to do anything. And then it compounds.

Key Points: 🔑: 🧠 The key to your 20s is constant learning, opening your mind, and acquiring skills. 🛤️ Envision your life as on two tracks: one track is your adventurous side; the other track is the skill-building side. 👨⚖️ Avoid being a one-track person, solely focused on a traditional path like law school or a high-paying job, which can lead to burnout and lack of personal fulfillment. 🎭 Also avoid having too many tracks (like trying too many unrelated things at once) which may result in a lack of solid skills and a life of aimlessness. 📚 He emphasizes learning a language, promoting discipline, competence, and enjoyment. Recommends Babel as a language learning app. ✌️ The "two-track" approach balances adventure with focused learning and skills development. ✍️ For instance, if you know you want to be a writer, try different experiences, but funnel them into your writing. 🧭 Have a clear idea of your interest or passion-be it music, technology, physical activity, literature, etc.-and explore within this parameter. 🌟 On your 30th birthday, ideally, you should be able to say, "I know what I want to do, I have learned so much, and I am ready to take it to the next level." 🚀 Embrace youthful energy, curiosity, and an open attitude towards life, along with a disciplined approach towards skill-building and learning. 💼 If you have entrepreneurial tendencies, try starting different businesses that align with your core interest. Learn from these experiences. 👀 Use your 20s to test out your interests and passions; if you love music, try different forms of it. If you are interested in technology, look for ways to innovate. 💡 Constant learning and skill acquisition are key to your 20s. If you're studying or working in areas you're excited about, your mind will stay open and eager. 🎂 The ultimate goal is to reach your 30th birthday with a wealth of experiences, skills, and a clear direction for your future. This is possible through maintaining a balance between adventurous exploration and focused skill development. 🌍 Explore various cultures and languages, enhancing your world view and building empathy towards other societies. You can use language learning apps like Babel to facilitate this. 📚 While exploring and having adventures, remain focused on your core interest. If you want to be a writer, for example, ensure all your experiences contribute towards that goal. 🎯 Identify what connects with you deeply - be it music, technology, business, literature, science, physical activity, etc. Use this as a guiding principle for your explorations. 💪 Use the discipline you've developed while learning a new language or skill to manage other aspects of your life. 🔭 Above all, keep an adventurous spirit and a love for learning. This will make your journey more enjoyable and your 30th birthday a milestone to look forward to.

It makes us older people (57) uncomfortable too. What I have learned through study and intuition about AI is that there is no nuance. It works well for some things, and horribly for others. It’s based on algorithms and coding that is done by mathematicians and techies. These people are often very high on the Autism Spectrum. They don’t relate or process information like 90% of people do. This leads to the lack of nuance and outright errors. We need to be cautious of AI, but there is plenty of opportunity for all of us.
