The techncian called out on the vid "Good to see its been ACF50'd". Re leafblower. Yes for electric, probably no for a petrol one? I think on petrol ones the 2 stroke exhaust blows out throgh the blower so that would get 2 stroke oil residue back on your bike. I'm bit leery about using degreasers on chains. Degreasing it too harshly can shorten its lifespan. It should absolutely be cleaned and re-lubricated with chain wax but personally I'd use some water soluble actual bespoke chain degreaser that is guaranteed to not do a number on the o-rings. Also, it was probably a good thing you didn't have a pressure washer; a bike doesn't need to have water squirted at it at those pressures, there are lots of exposed bolts, nooks and crannies etc - heck you can even manage to spray water into a tire if you hit the rim just right with a high pressure washer, I wouldn't really use one when cleaning a bike. There's no need. A steel-covered car, sure.

Thanks, Dave! 😊👍 Good question, I’ll be covering that in more detail in the next episode. Yes and No is the answer. I would definitely apply acf50 to any bike for the first time, Brand new or Used, it leaves an ultra thin film on the bike which works for up to 12 months. A lot of bikers use their bike in the winter and just hose the bike down after use. If you give it a thorough clean it will need topping up but the first layer helps fight corrosion. I would reapply to the most exposed areas after a wash and I have some tips and techniques for that so watch this space. All being well it will online Friday 19 March! 😁 I hope this has helped? Enjoy the Africa Twin! 😊👍

Great vid, I'm going to have to try Snowfoam. Cleaning an MC without causing damage is a fair bit of work. We have extremely hard water where I live. I use is a CR Spotless DIC-20 dionizing rinser. It eliminates the need to dry altogether, just a thorough top to bottom DI rinse and let it air dry. After 3 years of use on 3 vehicles I'm still on the original filter media. Huge timesaver and if you have hard water no amount of air or towel drying will ever be enough to eliminate spot build up.

Please don't use white spirit on chains. It will destroy the rubber o ring seals. If you don't believe me, drop a rubber washer in a tin with white spirit in it. Come back and see what damage has been done after a day or two.
@TheAdventuresofPhilJones

Thanks for your comment. My attention was never to leave the White Spirit on the chain for a day or two, after cleaning the chain and drying it, I then thoroughly washed the bike. In my research and experience, as long as you dry off the white spirit, the chain and o rings will be fine. I do appreciate your comment! 😊👍

I would be concerned that a strong degreaser such as white spirits would damage the rubber O-rings in the chain.

Thanks for your comment. I wanted to show another alternative and as long as you wash and dry the chain it will be fine. Chain degreasers do work well and I tend to mix them up these days. @@TheAdventuresofPhilJones got white plastics on my bike. Should be fine 😄 if it would be painted, than I would dry the painted parts. Our tap water here in Germany, especially in my region, is very very soft. As an example: I Got a water heater (for a cup of tea or coffee) a couple years ago, still looks brand new on the inside, without any lime stains or build up on the inside.

Hi Dave. Thanks for watching and for your comment. I did a lot of research before using white spirit and I, and others, have found it to be fine. I did deliberately include it as a cheaper alternative to expensive chain cleaners, but in my experience any well known brand chain cleaner does the job. I’ve just been testing Autobrite Direct cleaning products which work really well, check out my recent videos! 👍

This has got to be one of the best most through tutorials for bike cleaning I have seen. Really good! Just got my first bike and passed my test at the start of the month. For cleaning and lubing the chain how often should you do that? Is it just every time you wash the bike? Thanks and loving your channel 👍🏻
@TheAdventuresofPhilJones
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim. You’re far too kind, I’m pleased you’re enjoying the video’s and thanks for the encouragement! Congratulations on passing your test. It is recommended you lube the chain every 200 miles or so but not many people do. Just keep an eye on the chain and lube when needed. If you’re riding in wet weather a lot then you’ll probably need to do it more often. Again it depends on how often you wash the bike. Just keep a close eye on the chain so it doesn’t dry out. You don’t want to over lube it either as it will fling everywhere including on your rear tyre! I hope that helps? 😁👍

If you haven't already. please do yourself a huge favour and buy a dedicated air blower. They aren't that expensive and a proper one will do a proper job rather than the silly bulky leaf blower or the tediously slow hair dryer. Compressed air is also an option if you have a compressor, but the blower dryer has a hot air function that enables a quicker drying time.

Fantastic Phil, you forgot to mention the key ingredient - PATIENCE! ;) I struggle to keep my bikes A1 as I ride through winter in North Scotland. Coming home in sleet in the dark makes it impossible to keep on top of. Currently, get pro ACF50 twice a year and hose down as often as possible. Plus there's the issue of deep cleaning removing the ACF50. Interestingly, in my last 2 trade-ins the dealer gave me a price for my bikes without even seeing them, makes me wonder, other than personal pride if it's worth the anxiety of trying to keep the bike pristine. Cheers.

You definitely need a bucket full of patience that’s for sure, I also find it therapeutic too! I’m sure your bike doesn’t stay clean for too long riding in those conditions. Personally, I’d do my best to keep the bike protected from the elements, I can understand you wouldn’t want to deep clean it after every time you went out. What bike are you riding? 😁👍

@TheAdventuresofPhilJones

Thanks for your comment. I don’t like to do that. The reason being is that if you start the engine when the bike is wet it can leave water marks on the engine. It looks much nicer if you can dry the water off first with either a drying towel or a bike dryer. That’s my personal preference anyway! 😊
