@willbrooksofficial
Жыл бұрын
@@codymarestein6538 I would say he/she needs to zoom out their perspective. Don’t look for progress inside each day. Look for it after a couple months of steadily applying these techniques. You can even go as far as filming yourself. I love doing this. You can compare footage from a month or two ago to current footage, and then progress is pretty easy to see. Also remember, you may not feel like you’re progressing even when you are. Recognizing progress can be a skill in itself. Just keep training, do it consistently, and you’ll seek what you pursue.

I'm a fairly newly minted white belt. Just started training in May and I can tell you I just recently figured a lot of these things out for myself. I'm thankful for our community that has been very welcoming and walked me through how to learn better. I've probably watched a thousand hours of BJJ and you're the first person to mention a few of these. The biggest difference I noticed in myself is surviving the 5 minute rounds without gassing out, rolling all of the rounds, and when a new white belt joins I can help walk them through defense if I get a submission. Another thing I found helpful was helping higher belts drill a particular technique they're working on. I can act as a dummy partner with no resistance and learn a technique while not being spazzy. I can also provide feedback if the choke bite isn't great, or if I notice a hole in the technique. This gets them more willing to roll with me and we both learn.

Then imagine 5yrs later…now they’re purple belts or even brown and you think you still want to get there. Put in the time and stick to it. You WONT regret that. Good stuff... I was awarded my third stripe as a white belt yesterday. It's an awesome journey so far. As a white belt, I have been more successful in situational sparring over outright rolling to progress how I think when in a position. For example, if we are working on guard for the week. I will grab whomever is willing, and we take turns starting in guard for the 5 mins. The person in guard needs to get out and pass. The other is trying to submit or get a better position. If either succeeds, we reset. This allows me to practice the concepts we are learning that week without having to recall everything else when your "stuck in a position" you don't have tools for yet. In a little under a year, the muscle memory is getting built week by week.

Loved your tips for white belts. Basics are very important at white belt and trying not to rush things to get to your next belt is very important because I come across buys that are building amazing bad habits on a daily basis only to get tapped out and probably get some life-changing injuries in the next couple of years and quit. Best to focus on basics and escape well into your blue belt. As per Helio Gracie "A man that cannot be submitted, cannot be defeated."

Very good set of tips for new white belts, and reminders for the rest of us, much better than most technique how-to-what-to video lessons. As a >60 yr old 130 lb old man I had to learn these things the hard way just to survive and be able to keep showing up and training without being wrecked all the time. I've never slapped the mat or yelled because I got tapped or couldn't tap someone, but I have on occasion out of frustration for not being able to execute something as well as I thought I should have. Always learning, re-learning, and tightening up techniques to be more efficient. I'm still pretty happy any time I get a legit take down, sweep, or maintain mount or back for a while, very few submissions by me.

I have 3 years grappling experience and just started back with demian maia bjj.10 years off is humbling. My biggest problem is disconnecting so im trying to stay tight during rolls. Fresh white belt again im just focusing on techniques and proper defense. This helped show that im in the right mindset. Great video.

@willbrooksofficial thanks! I agree on the war part. People go way too hard early. I was nervous to roll again and sparred with a guy 60 lbs heavier than me. This helped me to remember to relax. I swept him and got also got back control with a seat belt. Thanks for the confidence. My sub game just needs work now haha

As a white belt i quickly learned a good defense was super important. I was getting tapped like 765577x a day and learned how to not open my self up and now I’m only getting tapped like every other round lol!

1. Not everything needs to be war- Tap early 2. No one cares if you tap- everyone will remember if you take a loss poorly 3. Learn to find peace- calm down and think. Don’t gas out. Think your way out. 4. Get active with setting goals. Make specific simple goals 5. Be aware of your progress- don’t be so focused on subs but on the fact that you see subs coming and escapes.
