For those wondering, the bit used for countersinking the bolt heads from 13:49 is called a forstner bit. Perfect for neat, cylindrical holes. As a locksmith, I use them instead of hole saws when lockfitting. Specifically cutting through the face and edge of fine timber doors. Brilliant tool.

For my bolt head countersink I make up my own tool. I made my first years ago and have made a few since in different sizes etc. Spade bit with a cut down 1/2 inch drill welded on over the point. Just cut a slot in the drill bit down the centre slot it on and weld keeping as straight and true as possible. Drill out your bolt holes and then countersink with the made up bit. Gives lovely centred recess as the drill bit follows the original hole. I touch the spade bit up with a grinder to keep sharp. Worked for me for probably over 20 years now.

Drill the counterbore with the forstner bit before drilling the through hole. No need for a jig.
@stephenribchester2185
3 жыл бұрын
How? You would have to transfer the hole positions to the top of the wood which would mean turning it over several times. Drill the counter bores then turn over again. Drill the actual hole and turn over again. Then realise half the holes haven't gone in straight so make the counter bore holes larger with a 1/2" chisel.
@bluevanmani
3 жыл бұрын
Don’t know why you have to counter bore we tighten the nut up so it pulls the bolt head level with the plate to much fafing about on this one money can’t be an object
@stephenribchester2185
3 жыл бұрын
@@bluevanmani Obviously. But he has gone to the trouble of setting up his filming equipment to show putting on a wall plate so he might as well go to town on it and show the way to counter bore as it may come in on another job where you may want to cover the bolts with a facing piece and crushed wood on the edge would not look right. That is the whole point of learning something then decide for yourself whether it is needed or not. Anyone could say drill the holes, put in and tighten the cup squares then if any joists land on the heads tighten them down, but who learnt anything from that?
@bluevanmani
3 жыл бұрын
@@stephenribchester2185 get what your saying but all down to budget I’m afraid obviously robins project is in the high end of costing I should imagine so you can do this sort of thing but in reality it doesn’t happen especially the way materials are constantly rising, that drill bit don’t know for sure but probably £30-£40. Don’t get me wrong the guys a true old school professional and admire he’s work for sure.
@stephenribchester2185
3 жыл бұрын
@@bluevanmani The way I would do something like this is firstly when drilling the girder try and work out where the joist are going and put the holes between them. Drill the wallplate and tighten them down well though usually they still protrude just a bit especially with this job as there is a plate underneath so an impact wrench cannot be used. If putting the joists on you find one or more lands on the bolts or you have to put some noggins in then it usually ends up tightening the bolt/s down a bit more. Trouble is if it is a day or two later the spanner is probably in the van and it is a pain in the arse to go and sort this lot out. Doing all that probably takes nearly as long as c/boring. It took him about 5 mins to do the c/bore and that included time talking to camera.
