In a typical year, over 50,000 people will finish the New York City Marathon. Depending on how you count the categories, there are very very few "winners".
It's a beautiful thing that these elite athletes share their stage with everyday folks from every corner of the earth. It's also beautiful how many people show up and give it their best despite having zero chance of winning.
This song isn't for the winners. This song is for the rest of us.
Lyrics:
It happens every year on the first Sunday of November
A grand invasion weaving through the streets of every borough
The worst parade to come along since no one can remember
And rest assured we'll feel the pain when we wake up tomorrow
Some people say we're crazy, but we're fifty thousand strong
We don’t know when to quit, we're chugging lemon gasoline
But only a few can win, the rest of us just tag along
The biggest batch of losers New York City's ever seen
We start in Staten Island at the Verrazano Bridge
The first thing that we do is run away a mile uphill
They don't even allow any spectators for this
But we leave behind a thousand port-a-potties overfilled
By the time you land in Brooklyn yeah the runner's high kicks in
The race is halfway over by the time you get to Queens
That bridge into Manhattan tries to break your will to live
Then you dip into the Bronx just long enough to want to leave
Some people say we're crazy, but we're fifty thousand strong
We don’t know when to quit, we're chugging lemon gasoline
But only a few can win, the rest of us just tag along
The biggest batch of losers New York City's ever seen
We come from every walk of life and corner of the earth
Some of us can't see but we still get out there and run
Some don't need you validating what our lives are worth
Some of us have one leg left and some of us have none
Some of us are grateful for the people that we meet
Some of us are grateful just to cross the finish line
Some of us are grateful for that extra hour of sleep
That we got thanks to the dreary end of daylight savings time
Some people say we're crazy, but we're fifty thousand strong
We don’t know when to quit, we're chugging lemon gasoline
But only a few can win, the rest of us just tag along
The biggest batch of losers New York City's ever seen
The people of this city, they come out and cheer us on
Clanking on their cowbells and waving funny signs
A block party that stretches twenty miles and beyond
And all that noisy music really keeps our spirits high
Some people say we’re crazy, but we’re fifty thousand strong
We don’t know to quit, we’re chugging lemon gasoline
So raise a glass for all who make this city’s marathon
And the biggest batch of losers New York City’s ever seen
