Silk is made by silkworms and there was a silk manufacturing industry in italy as well as Rome(greek rome) but it could by no means keep up wuth european demand thus the bulk of silk came via the silk road or through Cairo
@eLeft6

*Educating Tommy:* Two nestorian monks came to emperor Justinian's palace (6th century C.E.) telling him that they can travel to China and find out the secret about the production of silk. The monks claimed they had travelled to China before. After many years they returned with many silkworms and all the knowledge one needs to produce silk. From then and on the Roman Empire (byzantine) would be the only place in Europe that produced silk. The Byzantine silk was however of lower quality than the Chinese but still a very very profitable business for them. Until the 4th crusade they would produce silk and they would maintain a silk monopoly in Europe. The secret of silk was normally protected by the Chinese but in the 6th century China was at a period of huge unrest and civil war. The twitch chat is too dumb to know these (although I saw some trying to tell you, Tommy). The silk worms could survive in the climate of Europe and the plants that they ate were also present in Europe. Here's a Kings and Generals video about it: kzitem.info/news/bejne/rJCmr3ace6RliH4

The narrator in the first video forgets to mention Aztec human sacrifice ruining diplomacy between them and the Spanish. Also, while Tommy is right about how crosses often spread through force, Mexico is weird because unlike natives in the US continuously resisting religious conversion, the native Mexicans accepted Christianity relatively peacefully after the fall of the Aztec empire. The continued existence of the world after the end of human sacrifices undercut the Aztec religion, and the utilization of native religious imagery in "Our Lady of Guadalupe" and other outreach efforts during this crisis of local faith caused many Mexicans to accept Christianity as their own rather than being forced into it like other Native Americans further north. Side note, the pilgrims in Thanksgiving were one of the few colonist groups that didn't hurt the natives, unlike most other colonist groups in North America.

To the Americans it was a victory because they achieved their main purpose of entering the war in the first place with the peace deal. American was a new and weak country at this point, it had no official military, only using local militia men and mostly converted merchant ships. Yet, America still defeated one of the most professional militaries in the world and the best navy in the world on several occasions. The British claim to win because they burned down the white house. But no territory was gained and the Americans got exactly what they wanted, for the British to stop supporting Native American tribes to rise up and fight against America. In the end, Britain achieved the status quo and even lost many troops, particularly at the end of the war, to more or less American farmers. Meanwhile, America beat such a professional army with local farmers and gained exactly what they wanted from the war. Seems like an American victory to me. At worst, it's a stalemate.
@tresca4579
3 жыл бұрын
@@thomasverhy8126 The Americans didn't sue for peace, the British sued for peace in 1814, concluding in 1815. After the British loss on Lake Champlain at the Battle of Plattsburgh, Britain sued for peace as the war was not worth it. Britain had been exhausted by the twenty year with war with France, especially financially. So with not much to gain, no desire to continue the war, and a crippled economy, Britain sued for a relative white peace with the exception of a stipulation not to interfere with Native American tribes in their desire to rise up against the Americans in the mid-west. This was the primary goal of the American government from the start of the war. So it's a stalemate for the British/Canadians at best and a slight victory for America at worst, considering it's primary motivation to join the war was achieved. And against local militia men at that. That's why it's not seen as a defeat in America and instead seen as a draw by the vast majority of modern historians.
@purpledevilr7463
3 жыл бұрын
@@tresca4579 but you the Americans didn’t fight a professional army, they fought the Canadians (no offence) and when the British army came in after defeating napoleon, we invaded and won. Yeah, we lost troops, shall I introduce you to war, it causes the death of soldiers, even the winning ones.
@tresca4579
3 жыл бұрын
@@purpledevilr7463 Firstly, that's not true. The British forces were made up of regulars and Fencibles (Fencibles being volunteer forces). So no, it was a professional army (Slightly smaller in size) but with defensive positions vs a disorganized and poorly trained militia with slightly superior numbers (7,000 vs 5,000 at war start & Outnumbered 35,000 vs 48,000 by wars end) but on the offensive. The compositions of the armies were very similar to the Revolutionary War. Here's a quote from the Wikipedia article detailing the War of 1812 forces "Although the British were outnumbered,[121] the long-serving regulars and fencibles were better trained and more professional than the hastily expanded United States Army". This is exactly the same as the revolutionary war as the raising of the countries military had not changed it's system. It still relied on poorly trained militia men (Fun fact: This has a lot to do with the modern gun culture in America). Second, yes, war does cause causalities. I didn't mention the losses of the British forces because the Americans didn't lose any lives. I mentioned it because Britain achieved nothing but the status quo and the loss of lives in the peace deal. Meanwhile, the Americans actually achieved their casus belli. Hence why I mentioned the loss of British life and why it's relevant. As nothing was gained for those lives besides not losing territory.

It's traditionally seen as a stalemate, but why? On paper it looks like a textbook British victory. The Americans had two war aims. Stop the impressment of sailors, and secondly to invade British North America (Canada). It failed on both fronts, and DC was burnt to the ground. The US were the country to declare war as well, therefore the British were fighting on the whole on the defensive, with no aim to retake a country that was increasingly a valuable trading partner. Now, for the British this was a sideshow to the wider Napoleonic Wars, however it still puzzles me why this is seen as a stalemate as the American achieved none of their war aims? Perhaps the most long lasting effect was the British didn't attack the US again, but that seems more based on trade and economics than military might (at least until post Civil War when the US began their rise to superpower status). Perhaps I'm missing something? To me the pro-American view seems based on Andrew Jackson's victory after the war was already over.

I know this is old now, but here's a little American insight: The reason we support Thanksgiving Day is because for one thing, literally every colony and every camp treated the Indians/Natives differently. The tribes and colonists who started the "Thanksgiving day" story got along very very well at first. They exchanged goods and helped each other and got along early on. It wasn't until more and more immigrants kept coming that it was just impossible to hold back the expansion of more immigrants who each naturally wanted their own space and so kept pushing out into the frontier where, let's be very clear: there were hardly any native people. People have a misconception that native Americans were just super widely populated throughout America but the reality is that they mostly lived in small pockets. There was actually plenty of land for everyone but...territorial dispute and distrust (because literally every culture and nation hated or distrusted each other back then...one only needs to look at how Europe was locked in constant war for like 1000 years and including during the time America was colonized to know that). The reality is that native tribes each responded to the arrival of immigrants in various ways. Some of them were helpful and kind and each group generally tried to understand and respect each other. They would often have celebrations/feasts together as diplomatic symbols of peace and would exchange goods and so on. Some even married consensually and had children, most notably John Rolfe and Pocahontas who are something like American folk tales at this point. But as expected, tensions got worse and worse as more Europeans flocked to the New World because they were either sent their against their will ("indentured servants") or because they were fleeing war, persecution for their religious beliefs (which they could often be jailed or executed for depending on which country or which religion they followed). Given how bad poverty and inequality was in Europe at the time, many people decided they would come to the New World to make a better life and seeing as most land was either owned by hugely powerful companies and often monarchies in Europe, it was very expensive if not impossible to own land in Europe. Conversely, in the New World, you were often offered your own plot of land if you signed up to be an indentured servant or to work for some period of time. So...as more and more people came to make a better life for themselves...they needed more and more land. And...given that so many people came for different reasons with different ideas, political beliefs, and other "outsider" identities, they didn't really all agree with one another and so either ignored previous treaties and agreements with native tribes or had to get away from one another because they didn't get along. Similarly, some native tribes were actually not just kind and helpful, some were brutal and cruel. There are many massacres of immigrant/colonists villages you can look up in which native warriors would raid the village burning it to the ground and murdering men, women, AND children and would commonly take their scalps as signs that they had killed them. The relationship between native tribes and European immigrants was pretty complex actually. The only reason we don't see native tribes as war criminals or genocidal is only because the Europeans won, not because the native tribes didn't want to. In other words, many native tribes in America were just as war hungry and as the Europeans came to the New World, were already in the process of conquering or subjugating other nearby tribes. The "Powhatan Confederation" for example, is probably the most obvious example of a group of native tribes under one banner which would slaughter tribes which would not join them. The sort of simple idea of natives being generous and sweet to Europeans and then Europeans turning around and stabbing them in the back just isn't true. Maybe it's true in some cases, but generally, it was a case of making agreements, then some idiot either stealing or murdering someone from the opposing culture, then the other side overreacting and seeing it as a sign of war, then butchering a village or two and then it repeats. Then another peace deal, a few years of peace and friendliness and help to each other, and then the same thing, another scandal or a change in leadership on one side who doesn't want to be friendly and so forth. This just kept repeating until more and more Europeans came over and it got so large that leaders of the colonies could not stop people from pushing further West even though many people were either arrested or jailed or sometimes even executed if they tried to push further West. And as years went on, it was impossible to stop. They couldn't stop the boats nor would it seem moral or wise to considering what most people were fleeing Europe from and considering the incoming immigrants had just as much right to live in the colony as current colonists. And as the colonies became "America", then the population of European to natives was far larger. Some native tribes actually integrated into European lifestyles, technology, and society. There are many such people in American life today who have Cherokee heritage for instance, who are maybe mostly white European genetically, but who nonetheless are native even if they look "white" to you or me. It isn't until Europeans vastly outnumber the natives (many of whom died of smallpox by this point) that things become ACTUALLY brutal and very sad. It's at this point when the U.S. is still expanding West and Presidents like Thomas Jefferson are trying to find a solution to the conflicts between different native tribes and the now established United States. They were clearly cultures that could not live next to one another. One perfect example of why that was the case...was the Americans of this time were largely farmers whereas the native peoples still used hunter-gatherer farming techniques. Most notably, they would do MASSIVE forest fires to push animals into their hunting grounds to make it easier for them to hunt them (most cultures did this at some point in history). You can see how this is incompatible with a non-nomadic, stationary lifestyle in which you build farms and villages to last. Neither group of people could live next to one another and none of those Europeans were going home and the native tribes were NOT going to stop burning bushes/trees either. Different US governors of States and various US Presidents often held different ideas about how to fix the problem between the two civilizations but often had the effect of making matters worse because each new leader would often have different ideas. Thus, there was no reliability or stability in what to expect. One leader might say that you are free to expand West of some certain mountain range while another might say that doing so is against the law. This is probably when fighting between US citizens and native tribes got the worst for natives because at this point, like I said, Americans vastly outnumbered natives. So this is when the "Reservation" system was created. The idea with it was good but in practice, not so much. What the system did was attempt to create land for native tribes to legally own and be respected by the US government that was large enough for each tribe to easily live on. That way American citizens could legally be punished for treading on or taking that land. What was good about this would be that the native tribes were now guaranteed land that could not be taken and it would keep the cultures apart...so that hopefully they could live together in relative peace without constant mutual massacres. But what ended up happening is that lots of the Reservations were in places that the native tribes did not view as their native lands and were often placed further away from the lands they viewed as their homelands. So...this lead to more fighting among some tribes and of course, some tribes wholly rejected the idea. Much of the worst of this ended up occurring in Florida I would say and this is what led directly to the event/events known as the "Trail of Tears". Essentially, it all culminated with various Reservations being created FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR to the West in North America where the US Government knew there were no other tribes or, where there certainly were no European-culture Americans to clash with. As you can imagine, many of these tribes didn't want to go but many accept the deal as well and so marched across various US territories. And the biggest slap in the face of course, is that once many tribes got to their new lands...other native tribes who were "native" to those lands saw them as invaders and tried to kill them because...once again, native Americans are just as human as all of us, equally capable of sweetness as brutality. In any case, I just wanted to clear up the idea that Americans were somehow uniquely brutal to native tribes. As far as I recall, the Spanish might have the trophy for worst colonizers, haha. So, in short, what Thanksgiving Day means to most Americans is first and foremost just a day to show thankfulness to our neighbors, friends, family and so on. But it's also a day in which we remember that even in difficult times, as evidenced by the immigrants and the natives, it is POSSIBLE to show humanity to someone incredibly foreign to you. It's not a day to say "Hey! We were so great to the native tribes!".

If the story of Europeans genociding natives sounds ridiculous, it's because that wasn't the case. Natives killed each other at the same or even higher rate than Europeans did. They weren't a bunch of hippies like nowadays people make them to be. The Americas were filled with warrior societies that often practiced human sacrifices. At the end, what killed the majority of natives, by far, were illnesses brought by Europeans, but the same, though in a samller scale, happened to Europeans who came to the Americas too. For example, syphilis didn't exist in Eurasia or Africa before the colonization of The Americas. Also, the stupid claims of stolen lands makes no sense because no one at that time had a sense of nation, that's just our current view point and interpretation. No body "owns" the land they live on. Native lost their lands to a technologically superior foe and that's it. The Americas were still in the stone age by the time Europeans got there. And yes, the Stone age, they didn't work bronce nor Iron in a sufficient scale (if at all) and that's just in Mesoamerica and the Andean civilization, almost everywhere else there were only hunter gatherer societies. And also, no American civilization on record had invented the wheel. So no wonder why European powers conquered America so easily. They brought the Americas from the Stone Age to Renaissance in one pull, ended human sacrifices and other barbaric practices, but also got rid of part of the native invaluable cultural heritage which is to be lamented. And yes, we are better of thanks to European colonization. If America were still uncolonized, it would most than likely be the same as it was back then, due to the lack of implements to increase land output and general production, i.e. work animals. The closest to those are Bisons, but try to domesticate a Bison and see how that goes. The others were simply to weak for the task, hence why the wheel wasn't invented anywhere in the Americas, there was no animal to pull them nor the pull the Plow. Even so, the managed to build piramids and other architectural wonders and also reached a great deal of greatness, but sadly they were destined to remain there until something changed. And that change came from the Europeans.

America is not named after Amerigo Vespucci. Lands were named after Monarchs or their discoverers. Lands named after discoverers always used their last name. Like Columbia, after Columbus. There are no exceptions to this rule. Richard Amerike funded the first English expedition to north america in 1497, and it was usual to name the land after the person who paid for it (Falkland Islands are named after the Earl of Falkland). Vespucci gets the credit only because of the lobbying of the italian-american community.

Tactically, the war of 1812 was a British victory because they won more battles and caused more devastation, but strategically, it could be a US victory because the embargo was lifted, territory remained in US control, and it would be the last time Britain would seek to reclaim the colonies.

Most of them died from disease and and ones who survived and were smart signed treaties with the U.S Just how France, Spain and Britain have away their territories because they recognized the inevitable rise of America. "Imagine if the french won, french would be the world language" Tommy, you don't seem to realize that via immigration prior to world war 1 America almost started becoming more German than anything else. A world without world war 1 MIGHT be a world where America primarily speaks German. edit: Americans don't learn every president in school, although most of them are at least mentioned once. Teddy Roosevelt was absolutely a legend though. Lincoln was great, sure, but Teddy is probably the best so up to this point. Like Lincoln is no doubt excellent because of what he did for the nation, but I think I'd say there are definitely presidents that were better overall even if they didn't do something as significant. Kennedy was pretty cool too and a personal favorite of mine, although his presidency got cut short before he could really do much of what he wanted to do, some of which we know, and some of which we can, sadly, only speculate. Also weird off-topic fun fact, there was a time in American history that there was active racism against Germans and the Irish in the US during a time where a large number of them were immigrating to the nation. Funny to think about in light of more recent events. (and multiple of my ancestors fell into those two groups of people :) )
