Good interview! I randomly stumbled on this channel for the first time. I liked all the references to Detroit area. I. grew in Troy, don’t hear that city mentioned on KZitem interviews often!

Babysitting by device from birth. Every generation thinks their parents had it better, when they had no idea how their parents had it, as we are all insulated from the harshest parts of being a responsible parent when we are kids, and are shocked when we had to do it ourselves. Additionally, parents put the perfect photos online. They show their carefully cropped, perfectly arranged and spotless house, the meal they spent long arranging on the plate than it took to get it delivered….they put up impossible and unrealistic /unreasonable standards for busy parents and that leads both parents and kids to believe they are somehow neglecting/neglected. ADHD is not higher, diagnosis is. As is the “spectrum” of autism. It’s easier to blame a mental illness than admit your kid needs more attention and exercise.

Also a consequence of TWO income families but NOBODY will even get CLOSE to that third rail. Or make ANY policy that would make it unnecessary either.

@@wendellbabin6457 my grandmother worked full time. My mother worked full time. I worked full time and my daughters work full time. I honestly don’t remember any friend whose mom was a “homemaker”. Maybe it was different for us, in a small town, but then again things aren’t anywhere near as expensive in small towns as cities, so I’d say the homemaker myth is from old black and white tv shows. It certainly wasn’t my reality…

@@wendellbabin6457I would bet if you could come up with a workable policy that would make it possible for families to live on one income, there are people in the Democratic Party today who would listen. Keep in mind the government can’t by law dictate what companies can charge. They can’t force companies to pay more wages, aside from a minimum wage hike, which we tried to do in 2021 and got filibustered by republicans and our two “democrats” Sinema and mmmmmm what is his name? The coal baron? You know who I mean. Even so, I doubt $15/hr would be enough for a family, even if we got it. It’s a tough problem. If you come up with a legal way, I’d love to hear it and would help you organize to push it to Congress.

Born in 91 and I had a good long stretch of playing split screen games at my friends house, and just a regular LG flip phone once I was in 10th grade. Thankfully came through before all this mess.

I was born in 1975. I was 10 yrs old in 1985 which the 80's were some awesome years making friends and doing some fun stuff. I had video games like having Atari & Nintendo. But we were never addicted to them where we never wanted to go outside ever. I think since the inception of the internet & smart phones and multiple sources of video games it's made kids more distracted. It's caused less opportunities to make friends and experience things together.

Exactly. The key word is identity. Something that someone developes on their own. Not pushed down their throat by another source. It's insane this is even a thing in schools.🤦♂️

Quake and Carmaggedon. Under a guise of learning c+ that we've actually had after school, we had at some point pinch in our week allowance for vodka for a janitor and he let us stay until 22:00 / midnight and after learning "ok rascals, time to kick a.s..s!!!" XD since WE set up network, than during "lessons" we were playing MUDs

Children who are in the autism spectrum, who are are also growing in number as mothers delay childbearing dont require social interaction. I for one only had access at my lower schools (until grade 12) i could have had millions if interactions but i dint remember them or doing any. Plus i was tired becuase of the time we started. Later i realized that my day night cycle is not 24hrs but more like 36hrs because i cant fall asleep and by the time i do and wake up again and hiw i keep shifting and shifting on my summer breaks, its hard. Anyways this digitial world seems like a world for those with autism. But im still under pressure of the biological variety becuase theres always that clock in the backround and i havent yet adapted that it may also be irrelevent ( there are some cool aging therapies heing talked about now) plus my aspirations are a complete missmatch to my people skills. Therefore, everyone has something that need to be adapted to the world, but it seems that some have it easier.

The videos online of teachers trying to take phones and the kids who are literal addicts go wild- assaulting teachers. Schools need to put their foot down and go phone free. Homeschool if you don’t like it.

Children aren't any more or less fragile than they were 30 years ago. The only difference is that modern parents can't afford homes, and fewer couples are starting families. There is no "Epidemic" of mental illness, but there is in fact an epidemic of pollution and environmental poisoning that is absolutely effecting the health of younger populations. More children do not have ADHD, more children have phones and are exposed to a short form attention starved internet which causes ADHD like symptoms. Neglect and hunger are the number one and two problems facing children in the United States today.

African parents can't afford homes, yet African kids are mentally stronger. African kids don't have food but they are on tiktok and yet they don't have ADHD like symptoms. How do you explain that ? You can't just have an external locus of control and just blame everything.

If people are suicidal then it’s them that are suicidal. Not their environment. Inanimate objects or places do not have mental illness. People do. If an environment makes people weak it’s still the people that are weak. Yes, we need to address the environment issues but it’s the people who need to do it because it’s really on them.

40:10 SMARTphone free would solve the "School Shooter" scenario and most of the others as well, wouldn't it? I mean a phone call is good enough isn't it. Doesn't HAVE to be facetime or whatever video thing. Maybe location service for parents to know where kids ACTUALLY are if there are reasons for doubt or mistrust. "BAD kids", let's say.

In the 80s and 90s first time I let my 7 yr old daughter walk round the corner for piano a man exposed himself to her. I got police, they interviewed. They couldn't do anything. At my children's school, predators tried to grab children outside school gates several times, later even came into school. School improved security. Girl was snatched from her front garden a mile away. Man exposed himself on bus to my daughter and schoolgirls. They shouted at him, told bus driver who locked doors. Police arrested. Some boys on street got up to mischief regularly, going on to roofs of school, causing damage and lots of other stuff. They played with fire. Could be harmless but that boy stole money from our house. My son would have joined them. One i know of went to prison as adult. Yes I roamed wild and free as child. Nearly got shot randomly by irresponsible boys with airguns. My brother shot man in the arm stupidly. I was assaulted by man and made very wary of men who did approach me. Nobody cared in those days. A window cleaner exposed himself to my sister. A friend was taken by a man to an empty warehouse. She escaped and ran for her life. I kept my children occupied with activities and did not let them on street. My daughter rebelled for various reasons and i couldnt control her. She met up with armed drug dealers, murderers, gangsters from 12 - 14. I dont live in bad area. My parents agreed to take her in, then she met a nice boy and that stopped. She went on to college and work.

I get and understand what you both are saying. But if some of the things bother you guys personally so bad, get a flip phone. Jordan you had a good one talking about getting annoyed with your watch going off. Then get a normal watch. It’s hard for us all to bitch, when we all have the devices. What you buy is a CHOICE!

This isn’t about individual choice - this is a discussion about a societal phenomenon. The world is “smart” now (phones and tech) and it’s not going back to the way it was. Most people require a smartphone just for their jobs now. With a society set up like this, it’s important to talk about where, how and why we’re going wrong
@RaefonB

@@evalebedinsky3830 Agreed. I have a Nokia 105 - phone calls and text only - but it feels like soon it will be impossible to function in basic ways without a smartphone. Work expects me to have one, they want 24/7 access to me (wtf??) via WhatsApp, etc. Train stations, airports, car-parking payment machines, my GP surgery...they all expect people to have instant access to apps now, to do basic things. Pubs, restaurants and even the barber's were difficult to use during the pandemic without a smartphone for their QR codes, and society's never quite come back from that...
