Is it could be Marika's First actual Husband, Brother, or Father. 3. It could be 1 of the Members of that Family that had owned that Castle Maris where you fight Elmer the Bell Bearing Hunter (guy that has that Thorn wrapped Armor and possesses the Maris Executioner Sword). Tarnished Archaeologist has a great video on the Nameless Eternal City. He posits that originally, it was above ground in the part of North Leyndell that is now a giant sinkhole. It lines up with Lowet Leyndell too, as its architectural style is definitely Noxian, in the same vein as places like Sellia and Ordina. The theory is that the Nameless Eternal City/Leyndell saw a schism in belief between the Numen’s worship of the sacred tree and the moon. While the NEC is definitely more aligned with the Nox’s worship of the Night, Lower Leyndell shows ample evidence of tree worship in its iconography. As a side note, the site of grace that has the Omenkiller lurking outside is also the only Deathbed we can find outside of the Roundtable Hold, showing its deep connection with Erdtree worship.

7:40 The truth really, Numen and scions of the eternal city are the same. Nameless eternal city is actually lower Leyndell. Its the missing area near the front main gate. After the Numens betrayal against Marika, them killing Godwyn, caused Marika to cast them far below the lands between. That why Godwyn's body is below as well. Siluria, the crucible knight is down there as well to keep a watch over any remaining Numen and dispatch them. The numen's themselves can't be trusted at all. Even their deal with Ranni fell through as they are searching for her as well near the end of her questiline, killing Blaidd and Iji. I think it was Marika’s ambition (either deliberate or a side effect of being parasited to force godhood) that was her undoing. The Numen probably saw her as a traitor. Marika the Eternal became a god and oops… the Numen Eternal City god Lord of Night, the Dark Moon who guides the stars happens to go missing (along with the other gods - you see many references to ‘waiting for the return of lord/god). Numen retaliate with Ranni’s help after she meets the Dark Moon (wherever it was hiding/trapped - Renalla probably betrayed Radagon by taking Ranni to meet the Dark Moon), killing Godwyn, the Scion of the Golden Bough and thus killing the future of the Erdtree. In actual grafting no scion = no new growth. Thus clearing the way for the return of the Lord of Night Dark Moon and The Age of Stars. Basically the ushering in of other ages is replacing what Marika and her invasive golden growth overtook and consumed.

the old guy in the dlc is interesting, but its obviously a sword similar to the Relic sword and the sword of Milos and expect it to be wielded by the deathbed companion shown. i agree that deathbed companions are numen, esp considering we find the Deathbed set in the Numen settlement in Leyndell and we find that Fia detests the Golden Order who betrayed the Numen. i think its a little schizo, the ghostflame connection, since we know that the ghostflame sorceries were essentially lost to time until rediscovered by heretical sorcerers. deathblight is a later development to the practice of death sorcery after the death of godwyn which was well after the loss of ghostflame and the Death Rite. I think Fia though is responsible for bringing this syncrenicity between the old Death Rites of the Lands Between and the newer Prince of Death's blight, because she clearly wants to bring back death and all of its importance to Numen culture that Marika tried to do away with. i anticipate finding a lot about Numen culture including the deathbed companions in the dlc.

I don't think that godwyn just slithered down, but I also don't think it existed before godwyn. My biggest reason is death blight, something I believe was born alongside Godwyns death. Death as associated with the magic and the cold element, and Death blight is associated with those who live in death. That's my take at least. As far as Godwin being there, I think it's just a giant and elaborate catacombs for erdtree burial of the most honored of individual. It is directly based under the erdtree after all.

Exactly. His body was either taken there or he was killed there when it was above ground and his followers cut off their own heads to follow him in death. His head is underneath Stormveil Castle. I quite like the bone theory. I've seen theories that the Elden Ring was 'born' when a god died, and I think both theories can be easily consolidated such that the Elden Ring itself is made of the bones of gods. The significance of the spine is quite interesting as in humans, spinal fluid contains 'pluripotent' cells, that have the potential to become many different types of cell essentially, like less potent stem cells. It would stand to reason then, that the spinal fluid of the gods would contain 'cells' with a lot of potential for forming complex 'life'. Now I'm wondering if runes are derived from the spinal fluid of the gods. I'm also wondering if the golden sap that the erdtree used to produce is essentially golden spinal fluid from a source like this golden spine we see in the trailer. Incidentally, the shape of this golden spine looks as though if it continued to grow, it would vaguely resemble the elden ring itself. I've definitely just slipped my tin foil hat on now, but the cells that these pluripotent cells in humans become are essentially different types of blood cells, our blood essentially comes from our bone marrow, and we know blood is very significant in elden ring, miquella even uses their own blood to try and grow the Haligtree. Perhaps if Miquella has used spinal fluid, and watered the tree with the raw, pluripotent cells instead of the product of them, they would have succeeded

I can't remember the whole theory, but if I remember correctly Jack The Mimic has videos about Miquella purposefully plotting Godwyn's death in order to creAte Deathroot and the Prince of Death. I have a few thoughts on this. If Messmer does happen to be a secret triplet of Miquella and Malenia, and the adult figure in the Haligtree statues embracing the little twins IS Godwyn like some people theorize, then I believe Godwyn would have been close enough to Marika and the triplets to be one of the few souls that even knows of Messmer's existence. Perhaps this is why he was assassinated, why Miquella would want to create Deathroot. Godwyn's deathroot can travel underground in the LBT to find traces of this forgotten Demigod, thus uncovering the realm of shadow to lead Miquella there. Throwing in your theory that Godwyn is communicating with the Old Man in the DLC, then we have w more solid connection to how he's able to find the Shadow Realm by following the old man's pain. I'm not sure I believe this, especially if the Shadow Realm is not physically connected to the LBT, but it's fun to consider since I want more Miquella and Godwyn storyline. I do very much think it's possible Old Man is Marika's daddy, but I don't think I have enough to personally subscribe to that yet. He's definitely someone she used to have ties with though. The Shadow Realm definitely seems like a pocket dimension where she hides everything she deems too dangerous, blasphemous, or useless for her own realm. I can't wait to find out!

ever since the DLC trailer revealed the following two elements, a Carian Royalty looking like a Rennala Masc lookalike and Messmer feat. Butterflies, The Shadow of the Erdtree is giving me strong mirror dimension vibes; the untold behind the scenes story we've all been craving. my unhinged theories include the possibility that Trailer gramps was Marika's daddy. that's when i am right there with you until i turn left like this: Miquella's eternal youth curse and the passionate obsession around death, dying and decay in the game is unambiguously imp*lied. i think Marika the Numen woman became a child carrying womb-man forced to set off to find a safe "land" to give birth to a life that might've ended up been taken from her under ambiguous circumstances while she lateron got tree'd. there hexists also a myth version of Marika the Goddess that has been used to coerce people into obedience following manipulated folk-lore. whether the baby i mention was Miquella, i don't think. the timeline is f*ked up as is. i do however not think of Messmer, or Mesumeru, to have been one of her direct empyrean kin - the lore seems to imply femm* bodied beings, Messmer not her literal child but in the metaphorical "all are Marika the Eternal's children" sense. for some reason the way he speaks smugly, the pronounciation of "Mother... " etc sounds tremendously sarcasm pilled. is he ... a brother? on a not really related note what i found a VERY intriguing note by gameplus/the alchemist the other day was on the banners behind Marika statues/icons. he showed the one in a Messmer scene where an early version (?) Marika holds a baby child, and i noticed the upper arc of the banner is not visible in that depiction. also it's i think it's a rare version of Marika holding her arms in an angle lower than shoulder levels. curious if you have any thots on this! The Elden Ring existed before it became associated with Marika and the Golden Order, and its previous incarnation included death. I think it's more likeky that Old Crusty was Elden Lord to the Gloam-Eyed Queen who was then defeated by Marika. The Gloam-Eyed Queen was associated with ghostflame and black flame. Marika probably appropriated the Elden Ring, created the Erdtree (possibly from the remains of the Crucible), removed Destined Death and then veiled the Land of Shadow. Marika probably had an affair with Old Crusty and that's when Messmer was born (and possibly Melina).

Interesting. 3 cosiderations: -The ruins in Godwin's area is the part of Lyndell that fell down, it coincides with the deep chasm between the main entrance and the inner walls. A chasm that was not there previously the first defence of Lyndell, or else in the cinematic they would not have defended that side. All of this has been showed by Tarnished Archeologist -Also thanks to TA, we know that Marika changed a previously funerary rite (depicted in statues like in the chapel at the start of the game and under Storm Castle) to a birthing ritual, also converting the tombs function to erdtree burials (the urn with ashes reminding of previously Ghostflame cremations), that supports your theory. -Lastly, why the man should be Marina's father and not a first husband? Maybe is he the betrayed one from whose body Marika plucks gold in the other trailer!

I believe the veiled lady in the portrait in the Gloom-Eyed Queen and the Deathbed Companions take on her robes as they are from an order that the GEQ founded. That there is a Numen culture that worshipped Death with the GEQ as the God of the previous Age that served another Outer God than the Greater Will. Then the Greater Will empowered Marika and gave her Maliketh to seal the Death Rune that empowered the GEQ. I believe that the GEQ is Marika's older sister or mother and the betrayal in the DLC story trailer is Marika betraying her kin for the power of the Elden Ring. This sets Marika's pattern of abuse for her own family for Marika's own ends.

So, the whole thing with godwyn is that he was killed and his rune of death removed and broken. Where he is now is the roots of the erdtree. That's ( as far as i'm aware) Also where he was killed. He essentially became death and attached himself to the roots of the tree, slowly killing it from below. But, it's not exactly... HIM doing it. If you continue on with the interactions fia, it's actually a dragon within the subconscious. The reason why fia is there is because she doesn't want descrimination between those who cannot pass on and those who're still living. Those who're in death are there because of godwyn infecting things with well....death.

What if Marika used to be a Deathbed companion? emboldened by the flame of ambition. What if she was not satisfied with her role in the world, so she found a way to keep the crusty man "alive", or found a way to make him suffer after using him and then threw him away, like Marika does to everyone. In my theory Godfrey did not sire any healthy children, only Omen, one of the reasons for his banishment. This led Marika to sire Radagon off of herself as her perfect counterpart. Sending Radagon to fuck Rennala to quell the war between the Golden Order and Raya Lucaria and then destroy her mentally. Since Godfrey was a barbarian who got to be a Lord by the degree of Marika and not a true royalty, resulting in the Omen children. I think Godwyn was the child of that crusty spineman, hence one of the only descendants with golden hair, Miquella is an exception, but we know that the M series of Marikas children are Radagons offspring.

The sacred relic sword literally is radagon. It’s the same kind of sword as the finger slayer blade. Radagon is even doing the t-pose with one arm in on the sword. Also maliketh isn’t marikas half brother. He’s her shadow given to her by the greater will, like blaidd to ranni. Also (again) the land of shadow we’ve been told is where marika and likely the other numen first set foot. And the ships in the blue area in the trailer are what they took to get here. They look just like the ships on the obelisks we light in the siofra river. They have a story carved into them telling about the coming of the numen. Also the nox are believed to be numen or descendants of the numen. That’s likely why the ants have numen runes.

I think Marika’s dad pretty much sold her and her family to the Greater Will and Marika has retroactively punished him for that by impaling him. The Greater Will wanted an Empyrean and he knew his daughter was one, so he gave her up in exchange for power (either political, physical, or economic) or perhaps he was just a Greater Will devotee that served it. He could have also done something extremely horrible to Marika (rhymes with grape) and produced Messmer: an unholy abomination. This could be why the dad is seemingly stuck in some eternal punishment/torture and why Messmer is kept away in a separate world (he’s literally shunned by Marika). @maffa2849

I could buy the argument that there was a previous "god" and that Marika took his (?) place. But i do not think it is necessary for an explanation. After all, the Gleam Eyed Queen killed so many demigods on Marika's behalf that could make apparel for so many Godskin people. I do agree that the Nameless City was one of the cities the Numens founded along with Nokron, Nokstella and Sellia (edit: ORDINA! I always forget Ordina) and possibly Raya Lucaria city (the one that sunk). I find interesting locking the fact that the roots of the Erdtree are onto this specific town, whereas the other cities have "only" been sunk and wrecked. So if we were to give a specific importance to this city we might even say this is the capital city of the Numen people rebelling against Marika and the outer god she allied with, and that it misses half of itself because it has been obliterated down the waterfall we see (it misses the symbolic huge throne the other "eternal cities" have): it looks like this is where the Erdtree was first planted, OR the city has been put below its roots in order to let the erdtree suck out the very essence of the city until there were no more (there are in fact no Nox nor other signs of Nox culture around, like silver tears and such). I would link the mentions to death, like basilisks, are more related to the fact that this is indeed like a royal cemetery to the Golden Order, and that Godyn and his curse have given the place a spin for the worse. This said, no idea who the dude with the deathbed companion is (he can be a yet unnamed Numen VIP that will get space in the DLC, and his deathbed companion), nor the specific of what ghostflame is. We know Fia is there because Godwyn is there, and Godwyn is there because he has been interred on the Erdtree's very roots as a funeral rite, hoping that the Erdtree could somehow mend the sacrilege on his body by the half rune of death (which instead ended up being infected by Godwyn's undeath curse and has spread it all over the Lands between). The Sol knights are there because a mausoleum is there, and the mausoleum is there because Miquella built them in order to give his brother a recipient to come back to should his soul find a place back, and there is no better place like that to place a mausoleum like where his body has been inhumated (the question is more: why are there two in Liurnia, one so close to the other, and only one in actual Castle Sol where the eclipse attempt was actually made?) .

That’s an interesting theory! Only question I have from that though, if that’s the case how’s he standing up?

@@theemeraldgecko310 He's not standing, if you look closely he's actually on his knees. His pelvis (you can also see that) is behind him. His pose is like someone doing bent over rows but on their knees and the device that's impaling him goes through the top right of his skull.

On a base level yes, but there’s a lot more to it than just that, though I understand why you’d think what you’re thinking :)
