This is probably my favorite Lugosi/Karloff film. It’s so dark, I adore it.

Bela Lugosi is truly outstanding playing an atypical vulnerable character here - albeit with thinly veiled shades of evil. To see him weep is so startling and such an unexpected treat! What a thoroughly brilliant performance! Boris Karloff is the epitome of satanic evil in his own masterful performance! He is absolutely captivating! Both on par and superb, they complement each other to perfection. I consider it a privilege to have witnessed such talent come together posthumously for our sheer delight and ultimate pleasure. Adding to the unparalleled performances is the ethereal atmosphere - captured with such exquisite cinematography! The eerie decors, the costumes, (that creepy haircut!) and the classical music all elevate this disturbing theme and surreal film to incomparable levels of cinematic class. All these spectacular elements make The Black Cat 1934 an absolute gem! It’s a must-watch-before-you-die top priority. Last but not least, your seamless and awesome trailer for this masterpiece is splendid, and a very fitting tribute worthy of Carl Laemmle himself. Thank you for having shared it here with us all! :) (With my apologies for getting carried away like this. This film does something to me each time I watch it. To me, this is the Casablanca of Horror!)

What a superb synopsis/review. Perfect in every particular. It defies my ability to comprehend why this film has never become the critical (succès d'estime) and even cult (succès de scandal) favorite it should be. And, yes, the Karloff character is absolutely, irredeemably evil. Not one-dimensional by any means, indeed it's altogether too intriguing, enticing, seductive, but sheer, almost overwhelming evil. Perhaps unexcelled in film history. (Only one shortcoming: during the black mass the Latin utterings of Karloff are just unrelated expressions; example, cum grano salis.)

@@buffalopatriot Thank you both. A pity I never got notified for your lovely comments. I did write a literary novel with parts loosely based on TBC, as well as an expansive analytic book on TBC with info not found on the internet, plus a single webpage on TBC You will find the latter here: saintboris.blogspot.com/2018/09/the-black-cat-1934-casablanca-of-horror.html Sadly, those words were 2 years ago. I since found out a lot of disturbing things about Boris Karloff (with photo, legal documents and video proof!) & created the blog to expose him, in reaction to all his fans who insult Bela Lugosi at the CHFB. 2 years ago, I liked them both, and had no idea which of the 2 I preferred, having discovered BK first, and Bela with TBC 1934. I was blown away by him right away and watched anything I could find him in. I must say I am stunned here: I have never gotten any praise such as yours, and I thank you for your kind words. I surmise you might like my novel, well at least the best part which is TBC derivative work, and myTBC book. Not sure I'll ever share them though. Who knows! If I had received kindness such as yours, instead of the ridicule for my Lugosi in He Who Gets Slapped discovery video, and crickets [aka being ignored on twitter while others copied me and they got the thumbs up or "likes"] I may very well have never shared all that info. I did keep it under wraps for a whole year, by respect of 2 BK fans who had been nice to me, till the CHFB BK fans got extra nasty. And such is life. Hate me if you must, I have provided enough concrete proof to back up my findings. Thanks again. Take care guys.

@@rrozoff1 Thank you again. Your kindness both surprised and moved me, which is very rare for me. Please read my "The Black Cat 1934, The Casablanca of Horror" on Blogspot (link provided in prev. comment or, if didn't publish, Google has it) and you will see that I contend that Poelzig's words are, in fact, not only very pertinent but very well chosen spiritual truths that add on to the film, pertain to the characters and challenge the audience, particularly myself, to follow its tenets. I have a detailed section in my book. (It's ok: it's not for sale/not published at this time). But I touch at that at my page, compare this film to Casablanca and I also share an except of a music video showcasing Poelzig that YT wouldn't allow due to music copyrights. It's at my blog. I hope that you will enjoy the page. That particular page is positive and very complimentary to both actors. It's also not monetized. Thanks again!

The old black & white scary movies are the creepiest IMO. Not a lot of phony blood & gore like today's films but the music, the darkness of them, and the atmosphere just makes it that more scary.

Give thanks to Jr. Laemmle production head at Universal that this classic of psychological horror was put into production..........as realized via Edgar G Ulmers stylistic direction....as great as this film is now, much was cut due to the demands of Uncle Carl Laemmle who was in Europe during te shooting..........when he saw the finished film with all the undertones of rampant sex, sadism, etc he immediately ordered Ulmer to cut and re-shoot. We can only know the true intent of Ulmer from the original shooting scripts, and still photos shot during the production.
