Very well behaved stallion when he approaches his mare. NIce to see that the mares are not tied up to the point they can't move like a lot of breeders seem to think is needed. 'Old school' stud that puts the health and wellbeing of his horses first. Fantastic looking healthy horses. Bravo.

Its generally for the protection for both of them. some breeders will allow them into a paddock together, but if the mare rejects the stallion she can turn on him and it can end up in a fight, in which case you have two extreamly valuable animals taking chunks out of each other. That is the extream though and it will rarely go that far. it is also to ensure that the stallion does not force himself on a mare that is reluctant. A good handler, as seen in this vid, will detect if the mare is not ready and remove the stallion from the area. the mare here is also not overly restricted and will be able to turn away from the stallion and make her feelings known. A young stallion can and will on occasion force a mare and you can end up with a breeding mare that will always fight the stallion. not a good scenario. The stallion in this video has been well schooled in how to treat his mares and that again is down to a very good handler. This is a video that is pretty much a 'how to do it properly' lesson.

This was beautiful. You can see how he loves his horses and how well they are kept. If he “treated his horses badly” as some suggested, then his horses certainly would not react so positively towards him. Did you see just how he moved around them so comfortably and the horses in return were so relaxed. That mare trusted him with what he was doing, and seeing it was her first foal, that’s amazing. This is a real horseman, not a tv show with all the trimmings for show. Those who said leave it for nature to take care of, well, she and her foal may have well died. She looked exhausted, he was really worried, Well done sir, you are a true horseman and should be very proud of what you have accomplished.

I like the man, he cares well for each of his horses and he treats them as horses in a firm but kindly manner. So many dog owners try to humanize their dog, stupid, a dog likes being a dog and doing dog things. Your dog will still be a good and faithful dog, if you care for your dog he will allow you to be his/her friend and respect you as his/her master. This same goes for horses.

Thank you for sharing your experience with your marvellous horses. I deal with rescued horses and I see your horses love you. You are a guardian to them. It's a slow process of a firm hand with a gentle giant. In the US cavalry back in the late 1800's the war horses and cavalry horses were considered more valuable than the troopers who cared for them. They were and still are the most prized possession. Yours are wonderful. Congratulations on being so helpful to the equine world of the gentle giants. Blessings sent to you from Arizona.

The magnificent Percheron! My favorite draft breed. I wish more was spoken about the history of these horses and how Arabians played a significant role. Too bad this breeder doesn't leave natural tails. I have a real pet peeve about docking tails on drafts. I understand the reasons but the tails could easily be drawn up in 'mud knots' (at least) to keep them out of the way of harness and the like.

What a fascinating video. I learned a lot but, more importantly I got a feel for the animals themselves. Mr. Alain is a rare treasure; intelligent, caring, knowledgeable and down-to-earth. His animals get the best of care, but they are also expected to "behave" and of course they do since they have never known fear or pain from a human. As I understand it Percherons are easy-going horsels just like their larger "cousins" the Clydesdales but they have a bit more pep. I have to say that stallion has pep to spare, but he is still responding to commands and not pulling away or bolting. Only a great trainer can implant that type of behavior by long, careful training and sheer force of character. Bravo Mr. Alain!

Merci beaucoup 💛🧡💙💚.

Well, that's not the case. The stallion is in this box only a few minutes the time for Mr. Viot to go get the mare and then after the covering, he puts the stallion in the field. but if you did not watch the movie further, you could not, actually understand it ... Regards Ohi tv

2:08 he’s right there, if it’s not him it’s another one of his stations, so if he keeps one outside he probably keeps all of them. Plus it’s better for the stallion to be kept outside so I see no reason to not do so. But maybe it’s not, it’s just a big conspiracy, who knows…

@HorseAgain

Beautiful horses. I do wonder why they don't let horses mate in the pasture instead of keeping them tied up? I wish the person who translated this, had a better knowledge of the english language. At least 2/3 did not make much sense and I had to guess.
@lorapetron9319

Elisabeth Ellis when in the pasture you have no control over what happens. The chain in the mouth might provide some safety for the man and the mare. But if the stallion decided he was moving the chain is useless. The horse is massive and would throw him like a ragdoll

They bring the horses they wish to breed together in so they can document properly. Also field breeding can be dangerous since the footing may be uneven, a small scratch is easy to miss, but the infection that comes from it can take down even the strongest horse. Horses have been domesticated for hundreds of centuries. They do what they do for a reason, even if they don't think to spell it out for a video since for them it would be common sense.
