I loved this movie as a kid. I agree it is scary for a Disney produced space movie designed as a cash in on Star Wars mass appeal. Great review!

Fun Fact - in 1980, the Toronto Police Service assembled a task force to raid retailers that sold or rented movies to seize titles they deemed were for mature audiences. It would turn out that most of those assigned had serious cognitive issues. How serious you might ask? Several thousand copies of this flick were confiscated to be incinerated.

"The Black Hole" appears to symbolize Disney's transition into more mature, less Micky Mouse-oriented, themes that could be appreciated by adults while still being accessible to children. This led to additional endeavors, like "TRON", "Tex", and "Never Cry Wolf", that bred an uncharacteristic approach from Disney that accommodated the tastes of younger audiences without patronizing them. However, this fundamental revision didn't sit well with more traditional observers who preferred that the House-of-Mouse retain a childish and condescending demeanor towards kids, and thus the "Touchstone" subdivision was subsequently born.

I was 8 years old when The Black Hole was released. I desperately wanted to see it but my parents took me to see Kramer vs. Kramer instead, which was playing at the same theater. I still remember being at the theater that evening.. There were two lines, one for Kramer vs. Kramer that was all adults, and the other line for The Black Hole which was all kids. I begged them to let me move to the other line but they refused.
