The First Law Trilogy was very weird for me. Like you, I had trouble getting into it early on. The reason was different though. This was the first fantasy story/world that felt almost exactly like our own. From the religion, cultures, early technology, industry, and in just the way everyone spoke and behaved. It felt very modern with just enough of the "that can't happen in the real world" to let you know that something needed saving out there. And yes, Joe Abercrombie writes some of the best characters in any vein of fiction. I am 52, have been reading a long time, and Logen Ninefingers is in my top 5 list of fictional characters of all time. Basically, I love his stories but will always come back to anything by Joe Abercrombie because of his people. And his humor. The man has a wonderfully, witty, wicked sense of humor.

First Law is my new obsession. I’ve crammed the trilogy and two stand-alones in a couple of months. It only gets better as the world and characters are further explored. And no spoilers, but I was so happily surprised by the depth of the overall statement of the trilogy as a whole that sadly I don’t see get enough praise. EDIT: I shamefully forgot to mention the humor. Maybe I’m demented, but I’ve never laughed so much at a novel before. Say one thing about Joe Abercrombie, say he can write funny. And, if you do audiobooks I HIGHLY suggest at least doing the audiobook for The Heroes. Thank me later.

My favorite series i must say and you did a good job reviewing it the way you did. Any recommendations for other series that have this level of character building/development and story driven archs ? I read the full trilogy and the plot shortcomings will be handled masterfully i must say. He just takes his time to introduce characters and let them (and the reader) discover the main plot as the story goes. Makes it feel like the characters have a real impact on the plot being driven and altered by their actions. Great series and hope he continues to build his world further with interesting people. (have to say the infrastructure descriptions of the world/buildings kind of bothered. But maybe that's even a good thing tbh)

You should keep reading the series because the characters get so much better (which is saying something because they're pretty great in The Blade Itself). Jezel especially goes through a lot. They also get more agency. But of course, there are people pulling the strings and the world is not all black and white, and certainly not full of candy canes and buttercups, to put it mildly. Also, important to note that while this book is part of a trilogy (which is fantastic) the follow up books (3 more so far) are all stand alones (with some overarching background plot connections), featuring old characters and new ones, and they are AMAZING, each one is a different style and they're by far Abercrombie's best work to date. If you loved The First Law (which is essentially Act I of the trilogy, and serves mainly to introduce all the players) you're going to absolutely LOVE the next two books, Before They're Hanged and Last Arguments of Kings.

Joe’s writing is really great with his focus on characters. I seriously loving the different POVs so much, this is currently my favorite series I’m reading. Logan’s pragmatic viewpoint, Jezel’s self centered vain personality, Glokta’s skeptical detective mindset and constant paranoia. Not to mention Ferro, Bayaz, West, and Dogman (the other northmen) and you really have a wonderful cast of characters!

minor spoiler alert: couldn't help smiling when you described the scene with Logen, you made some really nice points as well. Joe does have a very grounded way of describing things that easily gives you a vision of whats going on. On the note of "the plot" however, without spoiling too much and put simply... It's a great war between two Magi. As the story continues you will follow all the different levels of that war and all the people dragged into it one way or another. The fact that its not entirely clear from the beginning and slowly comes to light as the story progresses is just one of the reasons I love Joe's storytelling.

I will preface by saying that this is probably my favorite fantasy series I have ever read. Keep reading the series, all of you. In my opinion, you really cannot judge or review this story until you have read the entirety of the First Law. Joe Abercrombie is incredibly good at building characters, so much so that, with the exception of Jezal, almost all of the characters in the story are largely developed so you don’t ever get a sense of who these people really are until you close the final page of Last Argument of Kings. He doesn’t develop a character over time, he reveals them slowly over time. With that said, I disagree that this book isn’t plot driven. It is incredibly plot driven, the only thing is that you as the reader don’t really know exactly what the plot or the objective is until you finish the series. That being said, keep an open mind, and I’ll be excited to see what you have to say when you finish the final book. I think about it like once a week and I read this book like 3 years ago. Love your show! You’re about to read a story on par with anything Rothfuss, Sanderson, or Martin ever wrote.

The first law trilogy excels in character development. Every character feel different, despite each them being morally grey in one way or another. However, what keeps this series from ascending to the level of something like song of ice and fire, is the lack of a fully compelling plot.

I just finished this book a few hours ago and I totally agree with your review. I loved how Abercrombie described and developed the characters. It’s a fascinating world, too. The ending could have been stronger IMO (more closure) but, as you said, the whole book is very character driven. The plot doesn’t really progress much. I compare this to Fellowship of the Ring. The characters are gathered and that’s about all that happens, but Abercrombie tells the story very well.

I’ve been looking for reviews of this as I recently finished it. I’m a character driven reader too but I struggle with this. I can acknowledge the characters are amazingly written but too dark for me. I realize this makes me hypocritical as I do enjoy morally grey characters but I think the kind of grayness here just bothers me I do think it’s ok that JA doesn’t follow the typical arc where characters have goals that they want to attain and grow to attain them. It’s overrated and I’m always glad when authors do new things well which he does. I am also in your boat because when I talk about this book it sounds like I didn’t enjoy it and I didn’t but I also like it weirdly from a respect perspective

One thing I find it odd nobody ever notes is the prose. It read really amateur to me. Why are men squealing all the time? The choice of verbs and words is so odd at times, there are some weird grammatical errors. It reads YA and I feel that he gets away with it because he’s a white male writer. I’ve seen female and POC writers with better prose get critiqued so hard for this but nobody ever says a word for JA having cheesy and cringe prose. I wonder if he improves in later books as this is his debut right?

I love Joe Abercrombie's writing! Glad you liked this book. I will say this though, that is one of the rare cases where I liked the stand-alone novels much more than the original trilogy. As much as I loved the characters (especially the Northmen), the main plotline is at times a bit generic. I still enjoyed the trilogy, but as you said, that's mainly because of the awesome character writing. The other books, in my opinion, have a much more inetersting plot, but they are more brutal as well... Heroes being a bit of an exception- the whole plot is just one battle, but it's absolutely brilliant and my favourite by far. I also love how he recycles minor characters from one book and gives them a new story in a subsequent book. Say one thing about Abercrombie, say he can write characters :)

West's thing with Ardee is bad but I feel it's the least morally staining of any of the PoV character's crimes. Largely because it's his sister and, while no man should ever do anything of the like, I'd imagine siblings all fight in some capacity before it's particularly unfair AKA when men go through puberty and attain an unfair biological advantage. Again, it doesn't forgive him...but this book never assumes the reader is stupid. I can't imagine many who got that far were of a simple enough mind to then write him off, as if context and intent don't matter whatsoever, which is a method of justifying sweeping moral generalizing and being too lazy or incapable of doing the right, but challenging, thing and looking at each and every moral situation from a completley unbiased perspective. Generalizing is the evolutionary mechanism developed to save mental energy, time and to be able to err on the side of safety rather than evolutionarily ineffective method of giving each snake or tiger "the benefit of the doubt". So you're the opposite of a bad person for having the breadth of empathy and capacity to simultaneously feel bad for west and understand that's very wrong. A "bad" person passes judgements about the entire character of another based on a singular instance with zero regard for circumstances or context. I realize that it may seem ironic and hypocritical, as I just said "bad people do X" but I feel that thats less an action and more an indication of several mental and moral failings leading one to passing such judgement. Maybe it's not a "bad" person, but certainly one devoid of empathy. It's just unfortunate that you have to question "am I a bad person for..." given the public platform you have and our culture's celebration of awful people doing awful things while calling it "righteous" due to a fundamental inability to discern right/wrong and a greater valuation for the appearance of goodness without any for actual empathy.

Is it just me or does Glokta's inner monologue make you laugh out loud?

Elliot! You really need to read the Shattered Sea series by Joe! I know you enjoy good YA, and it is some damn fine YA! I will admit I have a bias for Joe, as he's my favorite writer in fantasy (sorry Brandon), but I really do think he writes the best characters of anyone writing in the genre.

@Ragnar Volorus I think it tows the line, kinda like the first three Mistborn books. I'd say they're YA...kinda. 😅

Ragnar Volorus Joe considers them YA, which is why I haven’t checked them out even though I love the First Law books. After seeing your comment, I might just have to read them.

@@quattroCrazy I don't like YA often, and it certainly tows a line, but it's worth the time to give it a read if you like Joe.

Second and third book are even better, in fact Last Argument of Kings is one of my favourite books overall. Also Best Served Cold (standalone in this world - taking place after the events of the trilogy) is pure gold.

I actually preffered Heroes, but Best Served was very good yes. Red Country is good aswell, but the weaker of the 3.

@@timpeterjensen2364 Heroes better than Best Served Cold? I was put off when i heard the whole book is about 3-day battle...

@@sicdav1d0ff like its taste, our tastes might differ wildly, but i thought Heroes had some great chars. going through alot in a short period of time. Best Served Cold was a bit cluttered and at times you wondered where parts of the story was going and some of the chars felt a bit weak because they were only good in the group (dont get me wrong i still loved it) Heroes i feel does a great job with the people you follow and its some of the people who were in the original trillogy aswell (though minor ones) You might not prefer it over Best Served, but I thought it was the better telling of a story of characters, where as Best Served wins when it comes to the plot. Hope that helps. Red Country is like a mixture of the two books if you have read that.
