I remember this argument back in the school during the '70s when we were learning about economic globalism and the coming wave of automation. It seemed like science fiction at the time, so it was hard to take serious. I didn't expect it would not occur until long after I was gone and maybe that's still the case. I still have yet to hear a viable solution for supporting families without human jobs, particularly when machines manufacture and maintain themselves. I'm also concerned how government will finance itself without income taxes. I could see some formula for taxing individual robots maybe, even if controlled by one AI. We are not ready.

Furthermore to Yang point regarding college degree, it seems everyone here believes that an University degree would set them on a successful path, however from my experience most undergraduates seem to end up in some menial jobs and the same thing is happening to graduates as well.

But Americans are still so blinded by the belief of the American dream they still think they can polish a turd into a shiny diamond. The entire retail industry is close to being automated, from freight and haulage, to the stores themselves. We know it is possible with RFID and visual tracking to automate shopping to the degree you can just walk in, take what you need and leave and have your bank account debited. Stock rooms could be automated much like an Amazon warehouse, you could even have a robotic unloading system for your robotic truck and overhead robotic shelf stackers filling gravity fed shelves. There becomes little to no need for a person to do any of the work and this can be applied to many other industries. Under a capitalist model this is disastrous for anyone who relies on work to make money as there are fewer jobs with worse pay every day, the only ones benefiting will be business owners. It is getting to the point that computers and robots will just be a better option both in terms of cost and efficiency, if robots are doing all the work, why are we getting poorer and why don't we have more free time? I can't compete against a robot worker!

But anyway, this is why you never hear about drones being hacked and having them attack the other side or something crazy. With automated vehicals, there would have to be a program in use that can be interacted with. Anyone wanting to actual hack and take control of the vehicles would most likely need actually be in the facility that controlled them, spend months with the software learning it, connect to the infranet at the place, and then take control without anyone noticing even though these things would likely be monitored 24/7. So what we're talking about is a hacker who is willing to actually do some Mission impossible physical activity just to cause random wrecks? What's most likely the case is having a disgruntled worker wreck something up, but they'd get massive prison time and there'd probably be Nasa and Google levels of checks on people and security. Just imagine how one employee could mess up a fraction of the hidden google server farms out there by revealing the locations if they were pissed off enough. Yet somehow, no one's leaking anything. Now of course, there's the possibility of cars being controled by cellphone apps if they make that an official feature which would be stupid honestly no one would allow random people to control the driving functions via a cellphone. At most it'd be like radio and checking front and rear cameras etc. So as "easy" as it is to hack phones, it wouldn't affect self driving cars either. Fortunately hacking doesn't work like in the movies. Most hacking is super barbaric (like brute forcing) , slow, and most of it fails and heavily based on luck most of the time.

@@Txcowboy80 Of course you can compare the two through the only statistic that matters: the chance of a vehicle crashing on route to its destination. If the chance of a vehicle crashing when driven by a human is 1/100 000, say, and the chance of a vehicle crashing is 1/1 000 000, say, due to hacking (100% of the time it is hacked as you said), then you can conclude that an automated vehicle is safer by direct comparison.

Over 37,000 people were killed by motor vehicles in 2017, just in the U.S. That's about 100 people per day. It is true that computers can be hacked. But it is also true that computers do not get tired, irritable, sneeze, drunk, watery eyes, distracted by unimportant noises, or have an ego. They also have must better reaction time than humans. If a computer makes an error in some way, that error can be corrected and redeployed to all other computers. In other words, Peter can learn from Paul's mistake, rather than Peter and Paul making the same mistake each. Sure, there is risk. But as it stands now, tens of thousands die every year and it barely makes the news.

As the automation of truck driving jobs drives many out of work and over the edge, this will adversely affect the support community for truck drivers - truck stops, hotels, restaurants, etc. I would not be surprised if some truck stops eventually start to refuse to refuel automated trucks due to the harm done to their friends in the trucking industry and the lost secondary business to the truckstop.

It's already been proven that nobody with money cares about peoples' livelihoods. They only care about profits... The solution to these issues, however, isn't UBI. It's not even close, especially considering how everyone has differing levels of life quality and or basic to advanced needs. It also somewhat defeats the purpose of unemployment benefits, but none of that is neither here-nor-there because what we'll likely see from all this, assuming he's correct about where we're headed, is that at some point, we'll see new forms of regulation, additional legislation, and more taxation revolving around automation and AI. If not, well, that's what votes are for. Case-in-point, our beloved Donald J. Trump.
