Little context for those wondering what the clip in the background is all about. Officer in the clip was training those soldiers for Afghanistan, and pretty much at last minute he was told he is not going with his boys there, so he snapped, as he felt like father sending his own children to war and not being able to be there with them where inevitable hell breaks loose. Helplesness of experienced and traumatized war veteran being unable to do anything for his sons anymore...

Yes, 9th company. And the description isn't exactly correct. The officer had basically a mild case of PTSD or something like that and was declared mentally unfit for frontline service. He desperately wanted to return back to Afghanistan but they always refused his requests.

@@honzabalak3462 Well, you are more correct here (I watched 9th Brigade long time ago) but I'm not exactly wrong either. He was training them and he was in weird way close to them, and his inability to take active duty in warzone + inability to watch over his trainees resulted in depicted outburst. But good call on clarifying that and correcting me! I forgot about his literal mental status.

I love this movie, not just because I'm a sucker for russian military shit, but because it accurately depicts the absolute brutality and horrors that the russian forces experienced while in Afghanistan. For many centuries, empires from all over the globe have attempted to conquer Afghanistan. None have ever succeeded. I respect people who fight hard and valiantly, even if it means they may die while standing their ground. I lost a childhood friend due to suicide who served in the US Army and was stationed in Afghanistan. He hated the decision to pull out from the middle east, and was torn up because he thought everything he'd done during his service had been for nothing.
@robertalaverdov8147
2 жыл бұрын
The Greeks owned it for over 300 years after Alexanders conquest of Persia. Mind you that's longer than America has been a country. Most of the population speaks a Persian dialect, do you think Afghanistan being under intermittent Persian rule for over a millennia might have something to do with that? How about the religion of Islam, did the Afghans just become Muslim or did the Arab conquests have something to do with it? The Turks and Mongols; they all ran the place for centuries and their decline had nothing to do with Afghan resistance. And several empires like the Mughals were actually based out of Afghanistan. Only more recently did the myth start as the last few nations who attempted to subvert (make a puppet) in Afghanistan abided by civilized rules of warfare that frowned upon annihilating the population if they resisted. Bottom line if someone really wanted to actually conquer and colonize Afghanistan it can be done. You just have to throw out the so called civilized rules of warfare out the window and treat them like the US did with native Americans.
