I love this score, always have. This was a first run movie in the best theaters. I remember my parents dressing up to go see it. I knew Jack Hunter. He wrote this as the first novel of a trilogy, the other novels being The Tin Cravat and The Blood Order. Same main character, who was based on a real SS officer, a brutal and arrogant man, that Hunter interrogated in the OSS at the end of the War . Great books! Great music by a genius. What an honor to see so much talent brought together in one place!

Based on the best-selling novel by Jack Hunter, “The Blue Max” is a story about a WWI pilot named Bruno Stachel, who tries everything to get Germany’s highest military-decoration: the Pour Le Mérite (a.k.a. The Blue Max), by shooting down 20 enemy-planes (though in reality the medal was handed out by 16 shots). As he rises thru the ranks, and his determination grows, he fails to earn respect from his comrades and more importantly, his superiors, becoming a problem… With impressive imagery and outstanding stunts with those magnificent flying machines, great acting by George Peppard, Ursula Andress, James Mason and the rest of the splendid cast and under the careful direction of John Guillermin, this movie stays as interesting and involving as in its premiere 1966. About everybody who is dedicated to film music, though not seen the movie, knows the main title music by Jerry Goldsmith. It is one of the closest attempts of the composer writing a romantic (in sense of the epoch) film score, maybe due to his encounter with the movie’s original used temp tracks: “I said, ‘Look, why don’t you just get someone to fix “Götterdämmerung” and “Also Sprach Zarathustra” and be done with it?’”. However, Goldsmith proofed to be the right choice, giving the movie a lush orchestral, but still very ‘Goldsmithian’ and fresh score. While the main theme is somewhat embedded in almost every track, Goldsmith cleverly adapts and reforms it and, in collaboration with his longtime partner and friend Arthur Morton orchestrated the score masterfully. Enjoy the flight!

The Blue Max was one of the first Jerry Goldsmith scores I had ever heard for a motion picture. The one thing that made such a huge impression on me was the music could be listened to away from the film and and one could feel the emotions of the score, especially the sensation of flight invoked by Goldsmith's creation.

First of many great scores that Jerry Goldsmith would record with the National Philharmonic. According to Goldsmith when director John Guillermin asked him to score the film with a hundred piece Orchestra, Goldsmith was able to round it down to just 98 musicians to help the budget but when Goldsmith showed him the number of musicians Guillermin became quite upset and insisted that Goldsmith use a 100 piece orchestra, so Goldsmith added two extra Violas in the orchestra to appease Guillermin.

'The Blue Max' is such a fantastic movie with a stellar cast, Jerry Goldsmith's incredible score, and real, practical effects with real World War I era-style planes and aerial stunts that no modern computer generated imagery can ever match to really draw in an audience to witnessing dogfights in the sky.

Thankfully Jerry Goldsmith was the go-to composer for 20th-Century Fox biggies like THE BLUE MAX in the 60's. John Guillerman's masterful direction and a dynamic cast make this one particularly special, along with the oft-praised aerial sequences. The slight love theme is my favorite part of the score, and the sexy scenes it accompanied are as exciting as the dog fights. THE BLUE MAX is one of the most exquisite soundtrack albums ever released.

No composer alive today is as dynamic or as varied Jerry Goldsmith in shifts of style, he could write like Stravinsky, Scriabin, Tchaikovsky, Bernard Herrmann, Wagner, Strauss depending on the project, for this film the director requested a Strauss Symphony, so Goldsmith did just that, for Planet of the Apes he went full Alban Berg and Bartok.

Hello Bjorn, I don't know when he started to do music for Hollywood but 1966 seems a bit early for him, in my opinion. On the other hand he is American and the National Philharmonic Orchestra (which performs the music here) is a british institution. But in the end... Who knows! Best to you! Fred

Love Theme from the Blue Max, hardly! Thou Sex Theme from the Blue Max seems a bit harsh for 1966. Still a cool movie (especially for an 11-year-old boy). Of course, the movie was heavily advertised in Boys Life (to their latter embarrassment post-release). Playboy (in 1967) gave it its sexy cinema award for 1966, with good reason and since it was a period piece, it still plays well. Oh, and their lots of cool flying and killing scenes (before there was a Top Gun movie).
