BNSF ES44DC 7447 leads a long line of GP30s, GP35s and even three LAJ CF7s east through Lemont, all but two of which still wear their bluebonnet paint.
Sad to see those old Santa Fe colors disappear. They were iconic in their day. Hopefully bush will keep having heritage units of their amalgamation process. It would be even better to use the period locomotives as well. Seeing the gp’s in their original scheme would be really neat mixed in with the larger locos of today.

The 11th,12th & 13th unit of the funeral train was from the Los Angeles Junction railroad (LAJ) and the 15th unit was a rare BNSF Bluebonnet (ex ATSF).

Nice catch - 27 locomotives! This has to be the longest funeral train ever!

Could they be used for a rebuild base by one of the many companies that rebuilds old diesels into new ones? Are they going be sold as a parts supply for a short rail line?
@CSX4772

Andrew Falconer. That really all depends. If the equipment can be salvaged, it might be rebuilt. And sold to a short line railroad. If it can not be salvaged, it'll be cut up and sold off for scrap.

I’m 6 years late on this but LTEX is a scrapping company, meaning they’ll be torched and maybe used for parts

I saw some of these engines (40 series) being built at EMD LaGrange, IL in 1970s. So, you are looking locomotives that are 40 to 50 years old. Some will be refurbished (re-build programs) and others used for parts.

None of these units went to scrap, I believe. The LTEX markings stand for Larry's Truck and Electric in McDonald, Ohio. Think of it as used locomotive dealer, or a Humane Society for locomotives. There are alot of shortline railroads in the country, and chances are, quite a few of them most likely hunger for power.

One of the cf7s ended up at the Oklahoma railway museum. Pretty certain it wasn't one from this exact funeral train but they gave it a fresh coat of paint and run it frequently

They scrap some of them, but they also rebuild others (often using parts from the ones that met the scrapper's torch).

ATSF and BN both had GP30s, GP35s and GP39s on roster before the merger. Most were run into the mid 2000s and then rebuilt into GP39-2s. Considering that BNSF has enough GP39-2s on roster today to equal the totals of all three models before, my guess is almost every one of them got rebuilt.

What in the world is a funeral train? 27 locomotives is the tops for me. Update: I got my answer from Google. The Internet is awesome compared to my youth (1950's). Even dangerous, maybe? Thank you for your efforts. May you and yours stay well and prosper.

They are all using outdated friction bearings. There is probably a lot of other obsolete tech we can't see. Eventually it's more cost effective to replace than upgrade/maintain 50 year old equipment.
