My son has just graduated RCMP Academy and I am going to Regina for the ceremony next week. So proud of him and his achievement. I pray for his success and safely. May St. Michael the patron saint of law enforcement protect him.

I would like to tell you something. In 1977, when I arrived in UK, the customs officer look at my Canadian passport and told me : Welcome Home. It is the feeling that I had when I was in UK. It is my home like Canada is my home too. We are a kind of brothers and sisters even if we live in two different countries separated by an ocean. The members of the RCMP represent well the king of special bond between Canada and UK.

Always amazes me how close Canada is to the U.S. yet they're so different. They have so much more tradition, class and style.

It would certainly be difficult. Metal though does not hold the bodies heat. It absorbs and dissipates it continuously and quickly. Our Red Serge is custom fitted for each Officer to be as close to the body as possible. It is lined from tail and shoulder and through the arms to the cuff in a satin type of material. This allows the Serge to return perfectly in place the instant movement ceases. No snags, dreaded wrinkles or places where it might catch being worn so tightly to the body. It must move with the officers movements yet return to a perfectly pressed condition after hours of marching, riding mounted or sitting. So the Serge does not breath and perspiration doesn’t easily pass through to the outer heavy serge material. A very uncomfortable piece of kit, yet we all are each very proud to endure and wear it. Whenever I’ve worn this traditional order of dress, I stand taller with shoulders back and I feel the history and all the traditions we live our lives as a Mounted Police Officer. From a recruit to a retired Mountie, the feeling and pride never diminished. It in fact grew and after losing 2 good friends 40 years ago who were shot and killed while we were posted together in New Brunswick. When I wear the Red Serge Boots and Breeches and as I go through each step in the dressing process, lacing my highly polished “High Browns”, I remember them. The Sargent Major here is a good friend and top notch investigator.

From what I'm told [and I am not British, nor have ever served in the British Army], the tough part about serving in the Household Cavalry isn't the cuirass or the helmet. And I can tell you from years of being a medieval reenactor who has sweated it out in a metal armor that neither is fun on a hot summer day. Rather, the most difficult thing is said to be the boots. It seems that the Household Cavalry are not allowed to have creases in either the ankle or toes of the their riding boots. This makes the boot uncomfortable to wear and walk in. They're also a stone bitch to maintain... Apparently, if you get crease in your boot, you have to soak it out with hot water [which destroys the shine], then re-dry the boot [ *without* letting another crease set in], and then you get to put two to four hours restoring the shine. To the Regimental Corporal Major's standards....

Periodically, Canadian regiments are invited to spend a period of time guarding the Queen. She is our Queen too. During the war, the RCMP formed military police units. They were, for a time, given the status of a regiment of Dragoons by King George V, the Queen's Grandfather. In addition, they are well-regarded by the Queen because she loves her horses and they gave her one of her most beloved horses.

@@FrehleyFan3988 They're there to represent Canada's allegiance to and willingness to protect her majesty the Queen. The RCMP are descended from British and Canadian troop regiments that were tasked with policing the rougher western and rural parts of old Canada in the early 1800s. The RCMP is a paramilitary organisation with military roots and honours from wars such as WW1 and WW2.

@@FrehleyFan3988 Similar in terms of traditions and ceremonial displays but today the RCMP have many roles in canada ranging from day to day police work to full on international counter terrorism efforts. The RCMP focuses on defending Canada and Canadians from local and international threats and law breaking. there are over 500 different roles that the RCMP is responsible for if i remember the number correctly. They are most similar to modern day Military police but with broader outreach to Canadians and not just military matters.
