The Book of Mormon North American Tour
Recorded February 2024 in Cincinnati, OH and Pittsburgh, PA
Video recorded on a Pixel 7
Audio straight from our Aviom feed
Mixed by Brian Morgan
I mixed this to be balanced through the band, rather than have it trombone focused (though bone is still centered from left to right). I wanted to try and highlight the musical context I was performing in. Our mix in general had a lot of keys at times, with some patches being much louder than others. I didn't feel like spending the time to build in automation into the keys mix, so you will get a sense at times with what we were playing with.
Road houses can be difficult to play in. Most of them are quite loud, open above you with front fill monitors a couple of feet above your head pumping out bright vocals. I find it's a constant battle to hear what I need to hear to get my intonation right. Add in variations at different dynamics and you start to finding notes wandering all over the slide. It's one of the reasons I began experimenting with in-ear monitors towards the end of my time with Mormon. Listening back while editing this video, I hear a lot of moments where I was off center. It's definitely something to focus on for my next show.
The book itself isn't that exciting. To be honest I started to become bored with it a couple months into tour. There just aren't enough challenging or fun sections to play. I think my favorite number would have to be "Turn It Off," with "Spooky Mormon Hell Dream" a close second. I loved going for that high D every night.
