Good to see, he suffered a little extra mental trauma there at the end himself, thinking he was dead, just to fall to the ground like the piece of crap he was, and then to march back up the stairs and try it again. He deserved those last few minutes of mental anguish he received, very, very minor in relation to what he did to others.

Interestingly, Albert Pierrpoint grasped his "clients" by the shouldets snd looked straight into their eyes prior to pulling over the cape covering thrir eyes. He would also center them directly over the middle of the trap door, almost tenderly and without anger or unkindness. He made a special effort to make certain the large knot was perfectly placed. in the acting movies of his executions, we do not hear what he did. The sound of the neck vertebrae snapping at the bottom. It would have made a noticeable "snap" that if you heard, you would never forget. @@sanjosemike3137 While at Nuremberg, the other guy, the American John C. Woods who had lied to get the job and a history of mental 'events' used to place the noose before the hood, used a short drop that didn't break the neck, some of his victims took 26 minutes before dying and the trap door of his gallows was too small, many were disfigured while falling. This is clearly visible on the post-mortem pictures. Clearly the allies profoundly despised the Germans, the usual military execution is by firing squad, which Goring had requested but had been denied, hence the arsenic I suppose. These botched hangings were beyond humiliating, the time when enemy officers respected each other is gone, well gone.

The Polish were not as skilled at gallows execution as Albert Pierrepoint. They did not typically use a trap door, but instead a stool, which was just kicked away to allow the prisoner to just strangle. So, when they used the trapdoor, they used it improperly and made the rope too long. Pierrepoint would never have made that mistake and would also have "centered" the prisoner exactly at the center of the drop point, so they would not strike the sides on their way down. Pierrepoint also had the exact length of rope calculated to separate the vertebrae in the neck with a torsion of the spine at the bottom of the drop. It was an immediate death, and it was probably completely painless. However, the brain usually becomes unconscious at the exact point of complete anoxia. During strangling this is probably 2-3 minutes. There might also be pain from the pressure of the noose and the bodies' weight at the bottom of the drop. Pierrepoint avoided this perfectly. No tears are ever shed for these Germans. We all hope that they will be judged at the other side. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA) Retired surgeon

Executions by hanging frequently were botched, simply because the executioner, particularly the American executioners considered that they knew better than British chief executioner, Albert Pierrepoint and his table of 'long drops'. A long drop caused snapping of the neck and spinal cord, leading to instantaneous death. There are many reports of botched hangings by American executioners, but not one by Pierrepoint and his assistants.
