A moment I really loved from the book is when Homelander confronts Stillwell before going through with his coup, and Stillwell just snaps at homelander in the most calm and collected way possible. What resonates with me is when Stillwell said something along the lines of “you’re such a bore. You have all this power, Yet what have you done that no other miserable person on this planet wouldn’t have already done? What a waste.” It’s nice to dig under all the cynicism and grittiness of the comic to find a deep seated tenderness for what makes Superman so special when compared to homelander. Superman (and maybe superhero’s as a whole) are special and enjoyable because to an extent they aren’t us, they show what we can be.

I really do love this series. I am quite childish and juvenile, admittedly, so the more gory elements are something I like-can understand it being too much for other people, but I dig it. You can see a lot of passion Garth Ennis has deep under for all of his works, especially with his character work being absolutely wonderfully done, with their dynamics and conflict being quite good. Butcher especially is a fantastically written character, and Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker is what I consider one of the best issues of comics ever written, alongside Punisher Max. Also, Ennis does like some superheroes: Wonder Woman, Superman, John Constantine, and Batman are the ones he really likes, alongside Punisher, hence why their parodies are written more sympathetically (to an extent) or outright Garth’s favorite. His run on Superman was really good, same for his Hellblazer run.

Yeah, man can be quite edgy, but he is a superb author with a lot of heart and passion in his works; and honestly, I love the gore and violence and brutality-that hyperreality just exemplifies a lot of his themes and ideas wonderfully. Anything less just wouldn’t be him. Which is something I cannot say much for the show and it’s uh… lackluster commentary and writing compared to the comics, especially for the sheer depth Ennis did on military-industrial-academic complex and Vought’s history and political awareness (a painfully missing element of import).

I love this video. As someone who’s read the comic and watched the show, and like both to an extent, it’s good to see someone give a thought beyond just the surface level stuff we might find annoying or bad due to the history of the writer or how the plot goes in the comic itself. Is the comic REALLY dark, cynical and not for everyone? Absolutely. It IS edgy, but a big part of the comic is about criticizing the bad side of superhero comics as a genre. Even if I prefer the show and have found to dislike A LOT of Garth Ennis’ work, I see what he was going for and respect that. I know it ain’t my cup of tea… But I get it. I prefer the show, but I don’t think the comic is bad at all. I think people who can stomach a lot of the darker themes and imagery should give it a shot. I don’t know, still don’t like it. I definitely agree it isn’t shallow by any means and has plenty of really good stuff in it, I just don’t like it. I mainly found the characters just meh, particularly Stillwell, aside from not being intimidated by Homelander there’s basically nothing interesting about him, he’s basically a robot, and I get that’s the point but still. And I absolutely despise the Black Noir twist with a passion, I feel it basically comes out of nowhere, had very little build up, and makes countless scenes feel so pointless on a reread. Particularly the scenes between Butcher and Homelander, I can’t imagine rereading those scenes without thinking “I’m wasting my time, this is basically filler cause the build up between these two pretty much go nowhere.” And I’m sorry, but “that’s the point” doesn’t cut it for me, so many extremely dumb plot and character decisions can be defended with “that’s the point” that it’s barely a defense to me. *Insert plot hole in TLJ* “You see, that’s the point.” Tho at the very least this video did make me consider there’s more good in the comic version than I originally thought.

I feel like I should mention the fact that the reason that superheros became so big in the US is because of The Comics Code. For those of you who don't know what that is The Comic Book Code (also known as The Comics Authority) was this huge censorship that was targeting comics and cartoons. You weren't allowed to have anything too violent, someone who could be perceived as part of the LGBTQ+ community, or even anything supernatural. Before The Code the US market was dominated by Mystery, Romance and Horror. But thanks to the huge censorship several companies had to be shut down or sell all of their properties to bigger companies. Marvel and DC survived because they both changed. DC changed the backstories for their heroes to be more science based to avoid censorship.Whilst Marvel strait up changed genre. Marvel was originally doing Pulp Fiction but they saw the success of DC and changed theirself to match.

That is what makes her relatable: she makes mistakes, she is not "holier than thou", but she has the courage and resilience to keep her faith and kindness. And I find her story with Hughie very romantic because of all the ugly details - like the way they got over Hughie's bloody face when he went down on her at the wrong time. Reading this, I thought: so that's what a good guy does. Even if he is embarrassed because his pals tease him for it, he deals with it respectfully. I love Ennis's weird humour, the Female and Frenchie's quiet relationship, Butcher's background, the character development... And I agree 100% with your analysis of Homelander. The purpose of the books is to show us that the real heroes are regular people, like Hughie and Starlight.

I like how homelander narratively being just an average joe with superpowers matches a common sentiment writers have when making a (good) Superman story. Where it’s an insult to homelander it’s a praise to Superman The intent Superman when looking at him as an everyday guy with superpowers brings us closer to him But with homelander it’s supposed to knock the psychopath down a peg. Don’t get me I hate homelander as a Superman analogue but I genuinely thinks that well written

People who say Garth Ennis hates superhero comics don’t get it, he hates what a lot of superhero comics push. Most writers build their protagonist as flawed in the most superficial ways while still being the amazing and powerful hero. Their flaws come from “oh woe is me” rather than real character flaws or shortcomings. It’s “I didn’t get there in time!” and almost never “I don’t WANT to save you so I’m not going to.” Garth takes that and often turns it on its head. He’ll build a protagonist you can root for, like his take on Punisher, while still blurring the line between them and the villain. Are the heroes throwing themselves into constant slugfests where innocents get hurt and property is damaged REALLY the good guys? Are the government shadow men with tragic pasts trying to stop them but also letting loose their resentments and hatred? It’s often left to you to decide even if Garth makes his own opinions on it painfully obvious with dialogue. If anyone has ever read his Hitman book, Garth even reveals that Superman is actually his favorite superhero and he loves him to bits. Garth doesn’t hate superheroes, he hates bad writing.

I'll be honest, I think Cody (Pointless Hub) has really degraded as a content creator as of late. Maybe it's him having a kid but he's definitely gotten into that mindset that anything upsetting (especially related to kids) or edgy is automatically bad. Hell, now every other Alternate History video he takes a shot at his old videos for not aging well because they had some mildly edgy joke in them. Now, he's convinced a bunch of brainlets who've never read the comics that they are bad and these people will go around fronting that they've read the comics but then just repeating his arguments nearly verbatim. It's super annoying and shows some people genuinely can't think for themselves and need their parasocial daddy to tell them what is good and what is bad.

I like how the comic uses the characters to tell a larger theme of fighting back against corruption both corporate and moral. Something I can appreciate is that the story is purposely trying to disturb the viewer. By showing the worst and disgusting nature of the comic you have to be able to bare it in order to find the meaning. Just like Hughie, he had to go throughout the worst but in the end becomes a stronger person and maintains his passion and empathy. That’s the message.

@@Alexander59059 I think you’re giving it way less credit. There are themes and a story. If the comic was just “argh dude did you see that guy, he got a rat shoved in his ass”. then it wouldn’t be popular at all. I don’t get why the boys having dark material somehow makes it less valid then the millions of other stories with similar dark subject matter. An “edgefest” would just be blood and gore for the sake of it, no plot or themes at all. Billy, the most violent member, ends up being the villain who the nonviolent underdog has to face because Billy is literally trying to commit mass genocide. I don’t think a story thats simply trying to just be an “edgefest” would turn its most edgy character into the villain by the end of the story. Any edgy story would glorify Billy’s actions but The Boys make a point that although a lot of superheroes are corrupt, the issue isn’t that they’re heroes but it’s the fact that the powers above them enable and perpetuate conflict. Homelander isn’t even the biggest bad guy, it’s the powerless average corporate executive, the guy who is just a scummy businessman. You may not like it but it is commentary, that is a point.

Splitting Stillwell into two different characters definitely feels like a disservice to me. I watched another video a while back before this video was released that broke down just how significant of an antagonist his character as a concept was in the comics, and I'm happy to see that same sentiment reinforced here. I think Giancarlo Esposito is a magnificent actor (even if he has been a bit typecast since Breaking Bad), but he doesn't bring the apathetic calculating presence that his character desperately needed to exemplify what made Stillwell in the comics such an excellent villain. Maybe in some of his earlier scenes, but later scenes depict him as nervous, surprised, and outraged by antics that shouldn't be all that shocking to him. Hopefully they can write him back into being a believable chess-master type villain, or perhaps introduce the guy BEHIND the guy behind the guy to fill in that role. Either way, I'm looking forward to where the show may go regardless.
