The issues really weren't wrapped up in the "hour," as Marcia said to Cindy at the end of the episode that she would be struggling with alcoholism for the rest of her life. Also, the subplot about building the trauma center can be seen as a "time jump" that made the "hour" last many months -- unless somehow the Brady adults could build a trauma center as fast as the Brady kids could build a clubhouse in the old series. The episode wasn't perfect, but it was poignant, as you said, and one most realistice episodes of any in the Brady franchise.

A moving episode that is -- for TV and for the Brady franchise in particular --- surprisingly realistic. If you look closely, the issues really weren't wrapped up in the "hour." Marcia said to Cindy at the end of the episode that she would be struggling with alcoholism for the rest of her life. Had the series lasted longer, they may have revisited Marcia's problem in future episodes. Also, the subplot about building the trauma center can be seen as a "time jump" that made the "hour" last many months that Marcia would have struggled with alcohol abuse -- unless somehow the Brady adults could build a trauma center as fast as the Brady kids could build a clubhouse in the old series. The episode wasn't perfect, but it was poignant, as another commenter said, and one most realistic episodes of any in the Brady franchise.

Alcoholism never really goes away and it was very taboo at that time. With things being more woke and holistic, the storyline could have focused on her being in the AA meetings with others. It showed that problems like this do not discriminate among income lines. Marcia had everything going but she still took to the bottle which is what made this a good episode. It showed her feeling isolated, dealing with post partum after birthing children as many young mothers go through this trying to live up to their parents, siblings or friends.

Maureen McCormick politely declined to reprise her role as Marcia Brady in the short ived 1990's CBS prime time situation comedy/drama "The Brady's"-hence-Leah Ayers "won" the role. One of the reasons for the early demise of this series was CBS airing it at 8:00 P.M. Central Time-opposite ABC's young family comedies "Full House" and "Family Matters"-which-ironically-was a then "modern" day television incarnation of what the ORIGINAL "Brady Bunch: series on ABC (1969-1974) WAS.

Yes. He was the reason Maureen McCormick wouldn’t appear. She thought it was ridiculous that Marcia would be married to that loser. She wanted Doug Simpson, the Big Man on Campus, to be Marcia’s husband.

This rotted pizza of a 90s show stunk outright compared to the 60s/70s original. And this 90s swill is at least 2 times better than anything today new on TV--minimum.What state has our society reached? I love women deeply!

Here is where I did not find it too PC. The men in this TV show still mattered. If this was made today the men would be trivial and subservient to the ladies. Did that all answer your question?

WOW, even coming before Miss America didn't give this show a boost. Even the 1985 pageant gave Gimme A Break and 227's premiere a boost in numbers which 227 was able to hold on to. CBS should have given this show another season to catch on. I would have loved to see them address Robert Reed's illness into the storyline as he would sadly end up dying in 1992. It would have been interesting to see the family react and cope with Mike's death.

I'm surprised that Robert Reed was doing the show anyway, as he hated the show, and wanted to leave. He didn't do the last episode of "The Brady Bunch" because he was fired, and if it had gone the next season, Mike was going to be "killed off" to explain his absence. I think I heard that Sherwood Schwartz has little involvement in this, so maybe that is why Robert Reed (who hated Schwartz, and the feeling was mutual) agreed to come back.
@GSU2004

@@dhenderson1810 I was thinking that too but Reed did do some later Brady specials over the years. He also knew he was dying so he probably did this is a silent public goodbye to his fans. Reed kept his illness a secret from everyone, the cast would only knew when he was sitting waiting to die. I remember Florence Henderson admitted that Robert was fiercely private and didn't want attention as he wanted to die in peace. She lamented on how unhappy he was over the decades given his issues with his homosexuality. He always kept a good face for the children and public but when he was around friends, it would show sadly.
