Language learning is critical for the development of an individual and comprises a continuum across stages from the Preparatory Stage to the Middle Stage and so on. The Bridge Month Programme of Grade 6 for English has been developed to help students transition smoothly from the Preparatory Stage to the Middle Stage.By the time children reach Grade 6, they will have basic knowledge and skills in the English language such as vocabulary, a grasp of grammatical structures as well as listening, speaking, reading and writing. The vision for language learning is, thus, to enable students to understand the world around them, acquire knowledge, and develop competencies while developing their ability to express ideas and feelings, be creative, think critically, and be able to use language proficiently.
Activities can be planned to help develop the competencies of students. Content should be derived from children’s life experiences and what they enjoy or like. Students should be encouraged to read texts of their own choice and discuss with peers, in groups or the teacher. While the teaching-learning process is going on, the teacher needs to assess and monitor the student’s learning by focusing on identifying different levels of learning, appropriateness of the activity for the Grade, and finding out what the student has learnt. Continuous assessment during teaching-learning will also provide inputs/feedback to teachers to improve their teaching methods. Our endeavor should be to make the classroom experience not only full of fun but motivational at the same time.
