Based on a true story, ALVAREZ KELLY was directed by Edward Dmytryk in 1966. Taking an original approach, this western/war film is set during the American Civil War in 1864. The Northerners welcome a large herd of cattle led by a renowned specialist, Alvarez Kelly (William Holden). Led by Colonel Tom Rossiter (Richard Widmark), the Confederates are on the lookout and decide to seize this supply for themselves. With their army in need, the abundance of food becomes an important issue. But they also needed a man with the necessary qualifications to drive the herd...
Magnificently photographed and beautifully set to music by Johnny Green (including the Alvarez Kelly theme sung over the opening credits by The Brother Four), ALVAREZ KELLY is a very classic western which, even if it disappoints at the end, the climax being far too long and, above all, moderately realised, is a pleasure to watch.
