The BBC drama The Brothers created by Gerard Glaister and NJ Crisp was one of the most popular serials of the 1970's. It centred on three Brothers Edward, Brian (Richard Easton) and David (Robin Chadick) who are left the family haulage business Hammond Transport following the death of their father along with their father's mistress Jennifer Kingsley (played by Jennifer Wilson). This comes as a great shock to Mrs. Mary Hammond (Jean Anderson) as does the fact that Jennifer's daughter Barbara is the illegitimate child of her husband. The series would run from 1972 until 1976 and span 92 top rating episodes.
A 2006 DVD release of series 1 has thus far not been followed due to contractual problems, however here is the opening of series two (episode 11 of The Brothers) which takes up the story. It sees the first appearance of Patrick O'Connell as eldest brother Edward Hammond, replacing Glyn Owen who had played the role for the first 10 episodes. The episode is called "A Family Gathering". Followers of Eddie Stobart would do well to track the first series down, as it would appeal set as it is against the problems of keeping a haulage firm on the road.
Later series would feature Kate O'Mara and Colin Baker among it's cast, but here the original members of the show continue to do boardroom battle to keep the sometimes ailing firm afloat.
