I am a man from the other side of the world. I cannot speak Bulgarian, Romanian, Serbian, Macedonian nor even Greek. I speak only English and yet I weep passionate tears when I listen to this and I listen over and over again. I cannot stop listening. It is awe inspiring. My mind imagines a whole nation of people toiling endlessly under the shadow of the mountains they love.

@@stan3110 Thanks for that. I did not know that at all, but it doesn't surprise me. Yes the geopolitics in the region would be incredibly fluid given all the border pressures in recent centuries much less just the 20th century. But the music and the passion...

Similar experience: I'm an American music teacher, mostly teaching contemporary rock/pop/metal. That being said, I have a soft spot for certain types of choir, choral, and chant music. I lived with Bulgarians for a while, and the first time they played some of the traditional choir material I was like "Whoa whoa whoa wait a minute." Been obsessed ever since. (Visted Bulgaria for a few weeks, too) These kids did a great job, but this is a very popular folk chant. They transliterated the name of the piece into English, but if you look up the anglicized Bulgarian: "Prituri Se Planinata" you'll get some really good examples. The one by Stellamara (the original, not the electronic remixes) was one of the first pieces I heard. Also, you might really like a Bulgarian group called "Irfan." They write original music, it's not traditional, but they definitely keep some of the same mystique; one can feel the inspiration. Good luck continuing your explorations!

We have this expression "day till noon" in Bulgarian but it hardly makes sense in English. Usually the old people were getting very early in the morning say 4:00 o clock to feed the animals and to make breakfast. By the time the sun came out - they would call it a day already. So I am unable to give exact translation, but this one seemed more correct to me in English.

Almost all Western music is based on the equal temperament scale. Bulgarian folk music uses a different temperament, with different ratios between a given note and the next semitone up. The piano will have been tuned to equal temperament, hence the horrible clashes at the beginning.

@1manuscriptman The piano is not out of tune, the problem comes from the fact that the singers struggle staying tuned during long a capella moments. If the piano wasn't there, they would have slid down and lost the original tonality ; that's what you can hear from 2:00 to 2:10, they were not supposed to end up on *that* note

Venetsiya's voice is magical! This choir is amazing. Thank you for all your uploads of them, they're a precious gift, I'd never hear this any other way.
