Just like many people have fear they’ll mess up at any job this is normal to an extent. Keep practicing and try to take deep breaths and face your fear if this is what you believe your passion is! I also suggest to post on Instagram frequently with makeup on your own face Incase you happen to go viral because then you can make money for a lot less of the work, however it doesn’t happen for anyone so if you love makeup start working on others. Hope this helps!

Hi!! I'm loving your videoss... I just suscribed... I want to become a makeup artist but there are no good schools around my area (or the ones I've found doesn't convice me)... what do you think about online makeup schools? I've found one called qc makeup academy and another called vizio makeup academy... do you think it's worth it to study online makeup? qc is not cheap.. and I like what they offer but I'm not really sure yet... By the way I do have people to practice with I mean diversity to practice as you said... can you advice me please?.. thank for your videos! :*

Great question! I am really not sure about anything online - there is so much information already available that I couldn't see paying for something that doesn't give you hands on experience. This experience is the most important! Can you contact any artists in your area to see if they could mentor you, some more established artists charge reasonable fees to teach other artists one on one!

so, could someone answer my question? I am wondering what the qualifications are specifically to call yourself a PRO makeup artist and charge people? Do you NEED a license to charge people and, if so, can you get a license without a formal education? Are those without formal education technically professionals or does that have nothing to do with it? I love doing makeup and I think I would enjoy making it into somewhat of a career but I don't quite understand the legality and specifics in how to do so.
@AngieDiB
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Novali! You will have to check with your municipality to see if you need to be licensed to work as a MUA and go from there. If you want to join the union you will need to contact your local to see what the qualifications are. As far as when you can call yourself a professional, that is really more of a philosophical question I think. In my experience there isn't once specific event that turns you from a non professional to a professional. If being a professional means you are qualified to do your job, we would need to look at some of the bare minimum qualifications to do this job which are: Being able to do makeup on every skin tone, type and texture. Having products in your kit that can perform under the rigorous demands of the job. Being able to provide makeup services quickly. Being able to provide services in a safe way for both yourself and your clients where no one's health is at risk. Ensuring your policies and procedures are formalized and in order (legally and otherwise) to protect you and your clients (remember you are still running a business). These are just a few of the requirements and in my opinion all these things need to be in place before we even consider charging for services. As far as when and what to charge your clients, always put yourself in their position. Would you feel comfortable paying for the service you are providing? Hope this helps.

I have a full time job in philanthropy and I work retail on weekends and some evenings to get more practice. I'm using the retail money to pay for taking making courses at a school and I still feel like I'm not as good as I would like to be. It's amazing to me how many people think being a makeup artist is easy. I love makeup and I love making people feel good, but I am starting to get a little discouraged because working two jobs is hard and other things have started to slide (e.g. exercising, date nights with the husband, etc.). How do you balance it all? Anyway, thank you so much for your honesty and candor. I'm really looking forward to watching all of your videos! :)

You are superwoman! Honestly it's very hard to balance, I was in a similar position to you and I worked two (or three) jobs for many years before I got myself in a position to be able to do makeup full time but it wasn't without the support of family and my wonderful boyfriend. It takes time and it is really not as easy/glamorous as it seems on social media. I actually am thinking about discussing this in a video because you've asked a great question! Thank you for the inspiration!

Great question from @livjefferson! I would love to hear your thoughts on how to balance a busy life and pursueing a career in make-up :)
@AngieDiB
7 жыл бұрын
This will be a great topic for a video. It is exceptionally hard to balance a career in this industry when you are freelance. You always feel like to have to take every job, the hours are irregular and before you know it you've missed holidays, parties etc. But this is part of the hard work that you have to put in before you become successful. It also helps to set your limits and stick to it (not taking any work on days off no matter what it is) and being ok with missing out on jobs to take time for yourself.
@livjefferson
7 жыл бұрын
Angie Di Battista thank you for your honesty. I find it very hard to feel like I'm getting better because I'm not applying makeup on someone everyday. It's also harder than I thought to count on friends to help you "play around on them" because they are busy as well. I'm trying to stay motivated and positive because I really love makeup and truly want to be a successful artist in the future. Thanks again for all you do! Xo
@AngieDiB

I totally understand. This is something we all deal with early on in our careers. Patience is very important for success and growth in this industry. There will be times when you will be busy doing makeup and then there will be times that are slower but that will happen even down the road in your career. Go with the flow, practice when you can and don't be too hard on yourself !!!!!

Ive been looking at a online mua school, whats your opinion on online schools do you think they're as effective as a regular makeup school?
@AngieDiB

It would totally depend on what the program offers, the cost, and what traditional school you are comparing it to. At the end of the day you need to get practicing on people at some point!

Hi May! People have been saying airbrush makeup is the latest trend for the last 15 years LOL! I actually wrote a blog post about it here: theangied.wordpress.com/2017/03/30/why-i-dont-use-an-airbrush-to-apply-makeup/

Thank you so much ! I love makeup and started to learn from training school . When I start to do makeup for other person , I found it is so different from what I usually do on myself . It looks heavy , it doesn't look like the person that used to be . Most of the time my makeup aged the person a few years which I am really disappointed for the makeup I have done . I started to feel worried to ask my fd for my makeup practice , As I worry I disappoint them too . Glad I found your video , it's very encouraging . I understand practice is important . And I hope I can gain more knowledge on makeup on KZitem . Please keep sharing your thoughts and tips with us . Makeup artist is quite a lonely career as everyone have different path , style and techniques . Glad to watch your video , it's like a friend that can understand me . Thank you

my state doesn’t require licensing to be a makeup artist so is makeup school really that important? i truly feel that i have the skills that i don’t need to be taught and i do a lot of research on the hygiene part so i’m having trouble deciding if i really need it

That is not a question I can answer for you. You have to look at what you can afford, the quality of schooling you would be paying for, what programs are offered etc. Everyone has different learning styles as well. There are some people that need that in class time to practice and get one on one feedback from their instructors, some artists may not and will be able to figure out things with their own practice and research.

what you said in the beginning of the video is what I always try to tell people, I think the title 'makeup artist' has been rinsed out. I remember when I was like 10 I told people wanted to be a makeup artist and hardly any one knew what is was. I'm currently in college studding media makeup and I have not learned anything that I couldn't have educated myself on, also my tutor dose not seem to knows as much as I expected her to :( . ( college in the UK is not university, so thankfully I'm not emptying my bank). I really enjoyed this video it is completely honest and I'm looking forward to watching your other videos. sorry for the rant.

Thanks Kashima! I'm happy you are finding these videos helpful. Even for myself I find a lack of good informative videos for MUA's like us which is why I started this channel. If there is anything you can't find info about let me know and I can add it to my list of videos to make for my viewers. 🤗

Thank you for the video - it was very informative and helpful! I have a question about certification, I studied at a makeup school in Kyiv (Ukraine), became a certified a makeup artist and had been working as makeup artist for 5 years in Ukraine. As far as I know it is regulated profession in Canada. How did you become a certified makeup artist?
@AngieDiB
7 жыл бұрын
Hi Tatyana! There are places here that 'certify' makeup artists here, but there is no standardized or regulated process for this. It is not legally required that a makeup artist be certified to work here (in Toronto anyways) so the profession here is not as regulated as it is elsewhere.

Angie Di Battista Thank you so much, for your answer! Actually, I'm asking because I moved to Winnipeg couple months ago and I found out that the profession is regulated. So, I have to start everything from the beginning, go to courses, pass exam and be an apprentice 😩, while I have more than 5 years experience. This video was encouraging to me and I thought that I hadn't to go that path all over again but maybe what you said was only about Toronto 😊.

How do you have a makeup business legally? Do you have to register your business? And for those who are just starting their business won't registering the business be so expensive?
@AngieDiB
7 жыл бұрын
This is a question that will be tough for me to answer. I'm not sure where you live, but in Canada we register ourselves as a business (it is called a sole proprietorship) and it is not expensive to register. I'm not sure what the cost is to do this anywhere else. In Canada you don't have to register right away (you have to generate income over a certain amount) however there are some businesses that won't hire us unless we have a business number.

Hey Angie, My cousin is a mua here in our country and she's thinking about moving to Canada (her husband is Canadian) . So , how can she start this business in Canada legally?
@AngieDiB

I can’t advise you on this. She would need to contact an accountant (and possibly a lawyer)and have them give her the appropriate information about starting a business.

I assume this is just for US? Because it costs £9000 a year in UK to go to university... I'm pretty sure makeup school isnt that much!
