I loved how the film used the horror tropes to explain why the sacrifice didn't work. None of the people in the gang fitted properly into the stereotypes: the virgin was sleeping with her teacher, the promiscuous blonde was dying her hair and was manipulated using chemicals, the jock was into philosophy etc. Joss did a good job sketching this out.

Was really in awe when I was this movie. To take a genre and it's famous tropes and flip it on its head was just an enjoyable breath of fresh air to me. The homage to the creatures we all know and love, the clever 4th wall breaking while still kinda not breaking it and making it a key element of the story is amazing. Everything about this is just *chef's kiss PERFECT.

The film is filled to the brim with cool trivia! It was shot in 2009, and Chris Hemsworth's performance here brought him to the attention of Marvel studios. The kids are the Scooby gang in all but name, if you count "Holden" as Scooby. The cabin itself is an homage to Sam Raimi's low budget horror, The Evil Dead. "The Ancient Ones"are in a sense the audience, demanding the story fulfill certain cliches. They're also an homage to The Old Ones, and the 20th century's greatest master of horror, HP Lovecraft (so named by the 21st century's master, Stephen King.) Nobody's yet made THE Lovecraft movie, but ALIEN, In the Mouth of Madness, and this film come closest.

They worked so hard to find the right group of five people to fill the five roles for the sacrifice...then mixed up who was whom. Jules got labeled The Wh*** but she's in a monogomous, consenting relationship and is a nursing student who is easily manipulated and frequently performs comedy bits for her friends. The Fool. Curt is cast as The Athlete but he is a sociology major on an academic - not athletic - scholarship and instantly tells from what book Dana has which class and professor she has and recommends another (very dense) textbook to read. The Scholar. Holden is designated The Scholar but he doesn't make any great logical leaps or deductions and he IS on an athletic scholarship as a football plater. The Athlete. Dana starts the film in her underwear dancing in front of an open window for everyone to see and just got out of an illicit affair with her professor before immediately trying to rebound with Holden. The Wh***. Marty is the one who figures out something's wrong, tries to convince everyone that something's wrong, immediately acts heroic to defend Jules when Mordecai insults her, uses logical deductions to determine that they're being manipulated, repeatedly tells everyone to stay out the basement, tells everyone NOT to split up, figures out almost the entire plot on his own finding the hidden camera, is resourceful to improvise his extendo-o-bong into a weapon, never flirts with or has sex with anyone, and survives more than everyone else in the film combined. Marty is The Virgin/The Final Girl. This ritual was doomed from the very start.

The movie is a satire on the horror genre. Basically we the horror fans are the ancient gods. In America the popular type of horror is the slasher. That’s why they need the archetype if the virgin, jock etc. And why in Japan, it’s a little ghost girl. Because movies theatres famous for movies like Ring. All of the monsters are references to other horror movies. Like the guy with the saw blades and the sphere is a reference to Pinhead.
@unou588
2 жыл бұрын
My best guess is the "Ancient Ones" are most likely references to the Greek Titans(due to their size) and that wherever underneath the cabin was was some sort of entrance to a deep earth cave system; which is more than likely where Zeus and the other gods trapped them. If that were the case.. then where they are before they rise could have been Tartarus, as Tartarus is supposed to be a 'deep abyss' where the titans were imprisoned and tortured by the greek pantheon. Best guess is the greek pantheon died, titans survived.

I love how satirical this movie is with horror films. To answer why they HAVE to kill the stoner is because the organization (Hollywood) has to manufacture scenarios for the situation/ritual (horror film) and let the Ancient Ones (the audience) KNOW who is which horror character archetype. Like a movie, if a character ACTS a certain way, it lets the audience know what kind of character that person is. This is why the redhead is considered a "Virgin" even though she isn't one. The organization uses drugs to influence them to act like the horror movie character archetypes. Since Marty is high, he acts like a "fool." It's also why Jules has to take off her clothes, and why the hair dye makes her act dumb. She's the "dumb blonde" or the horror movie "whore." The Ancient Ones (who are a metaphor for the audience) need to SEE the characters acting like the five horror character archetypes: The Whore, Athlete, Scholar, Fool, and the Virgin. The rituals (horror films) are different based on different locations. This movie is so clever with it's metaphor that it makes me wish more movies like this were made, maybe even a prequel series with one of the other rituals being performed.

This is one of the more brilliant horror movies - you can show it to your dumb friends and they will enjoy it - but along with the Shining - it could have a university course devoted to it. The opening scene is deliberately designed to mess you up (the studio wanted it cut and Joss said F-U) and the final scene is an homage to Aliens "You always were an a**hole, Gorman" - I could go on but why bore you.
