Saw this on TV in Australia, once when I was a kid in the 80's- remembered it to this day. Particularly that line- " You've got everything AND the kitchen sink." Certainly a good step above the usual made for TV pulp- and as for Pete Chapouris' hot rod- the actual builder and owner of the California Kid- that coloured my view of what a hot rod SHOULD look like- not those pastel abortions that were popular in the 80's to 90's- so glad the more traditional look has come back into vogue in the last decade!
@AtomicReverend
Жыл бұрын
I grew up when hotrods were god aweful ulgy in the late 1980s to the mid 1990s and I despised the pastel monochrome rides that were all small block Chevy powered with mustang II suspension and tweed japanese bucket seat interiored out. Such ugly styling. In 1995ish one of my buddies whose car became famous for its "cartoonish" (quoting hotrod magazine), that was traditional drag car late 1950s styling and it pretty much put the traditional hotrod/ratrod back on the map, he introduced me into the whole (at the time underground) traditional rockabilly scene and all the amazing cars that up until then I thought were only in my ol'mans Rod & Custom magazine back issues. Since that time traditional hot rods have came and for the most part they've stuck around although I noticed that the late 60s style seems to be really taking off along with the "TROG" style (which is also cool in it's own right) and I am so glad that the pastel look is in the rear view mirror, I was even cool with the restorods of the late 1970s it's just those billet everything pastel Street rods that really bother me although as I get older I can appreciate the craftsmanship that went into them but it still doesn't change the fact that they are ugly.
@ronasaurus74

@@AtomicReverend Totally, I was born 1967, same stuff exactly. Amazes me some still build billet machines, all the wrong styling cues..generally glass bodied though, so who cares? But some ruin real Henry though- plenty of money, no taste! People still put 80's wheels, of different brand on 60's and earlier cars, it's mostly guys a touch older than me, who DIDN'T puke during the 80's, thought that shit was cool. Oh, yeah, that shit isn't dead, go to "Street Rod Nationals", be prepared to taste the vomit.....

@@ronasaurus74 the Ford Model A in my avatar (it's a pickup) I am building it into a hotrod it is currently in about a million pieces and scattered out not only in my garage but in my extra bedroom lol I am trying for 1960 in the time frame for styling but with a few hidden modern touches like a 5-speed transmission and a dual circuit Master cylinder that's about it oh and a electronic Stewart Warner speedometer that looks traditional because who wants to mess around with speedometer gears wgen GPS is a thing. Other then that I prefer to keep it tasteful. Boyd Wheels look Fair on a 1990 Chevrolet pickup they look terrible on a 32 Ford highboy lol I am hoping to have it done and reliable enough to drive it to the 2023 Street Rod Nationals (so far it's driving me broke and isn't even close). I have been reading about the Street Rod Nationals since I was 12 or 13 years old flipping through my father's old back issues of Rod & Custom magazine when it was the sponsor of the first Street Rod Nationals Not that I really want to go to the car show but I always figured it would be a blast to drive a Model A truck down back roads and side roads across most of the country (I am in So. Cal). I got a feeling that will be tons of billet street rods and probably a ton of rat rods with diesel engines (neither of which I'm a big fan of). I am glad to see when people actually drive their car so I won't really criticize them personally but I have definitely seen my fair share of street rods with absolutely horrendous styling cues. What's even worse I've seen a lot of billet street rods that they decided to put some radial White Walls and a reproduction banjo steering wheel on it trying to fake the funk meanwhile under the hood is the heartbeat of America valve covered fully billet aluminum 350 cubic inch Chevy small block lol

The part of the story that they didn't tell you is that when they towed the sheriff's car back to the yard, there was a full moon that night. All of the dents popped out by themselves, and the glass became whole again. Just before daylight, it rolled out of the yard on its own. All of the police equipment fell off, one piece at a time, and the emblems on the doors faded out as it slowly rolled eastward by itself, empty. Somewhere in Louisiana around New Orleans, it changed color, the blue in the two tone paint job turning a deep blood red. It continued northward for several more weeks, eventually rolling into Pennsylvania where it ended up in the hands of a high school kid named Arnie Cunningham. From there, everybody knows the rest of the story.

Good little movie. Worth the watch on a slow night, and it is FREE! Weren't TV shows horrible back then, the production quality that is. Same old crappy fonts in the credits, horrible elevator music style soundtrack, lousy camera quality, and dime store sets. But what a hoot seeing the big stars back then: Sheen, Nolte, and Vic "COMBAT!" Morrow. Inside info: What ended up on the cutting room floor: When sharing an intimate moment with the waitress in the trailer, Sheen told her about his job back home, that he was an assistant manager at a J.C. Penny's bedding department. He was excited about getting a $1 an hour raise and asked her to marry him since now he could afford to have a wife. She turned him down because she too just got a two dollar weekly increase in pay, plus she tells him that he's too good for her, being an assistant manager at Pennys and all. Trivia: wondering why Martin Sheen's brother in this movie, Don McCord, looks like Sheen? Well, that's because the driver is Joe Estevez, Martin Sheen's real life brother. Even today Joe still looks like Martin. Bonus Trivia: "Sheen" is NOT Martin's and Joe's family name. "Martin Sheen" is a stage name that "Ramon Estevez" conjured up. In fact, Martin Sheen's driver's license says "Ramon Estevez" - his birth name. For a time Emilio was using the name "Sheen" but he later said he was proud of his Spanish (as in Spain) roots, so he decided stick with "Estevez."

That, was actually a good movie. Michelle Phillips was beautiful back then, very pretty. But naughty Christine, up to no good again with a deranged driver behind the wheel. Good film thanx for the upload.

@@delorispoindexter5663 I’ve been a car guy my whole life, back in 1989 street rods etc the magazine had a full write up of the car , who owns it and all about it. One of the little known facts was the engine in this movie actually being the 32 yellow deuce.

That evil sheriff got his comeuption. But to be fair, the movie seems to imply that his wife and kid may have been recently killed the same way, perhaps by hotrodders running them off the road, thus triggering his serial murder spree.

As an actor, Martin Sheen is as watchable as his son Charlie, which is not very. Nick Nolte should have gotten lead on this one. The California Kid is a 1974 American made-for-television action thriller film directed by Richard T. Heffron and starring Martin Sheen. In 1958, two Navy sailors on leave (one portrayed by Sheen's younger brother, Joe Estevez) are speeding in a 1951 Ford Custom to get back to base on time.

I remember the 60’s driving home or to see friends on 96 hour passes or weekend. The southern cops would look for the military base stickers and stop you. You could pay $20 on the spot or go to jail until Monday morning to appear before justice of peace. Cops knew we had to get back or where we were going for weekend in time or we would be awol and probably out of bounds. We would pay $20. Mind you a private at the time made $80 a month and the ranks pay went up by increments of $2-$4 or so. In the 70’s congress actually passed law to stop that. Some kid that had influence must have pursued it. Yeah those small town southern cops and justice of the peace were crooks.

Nick Nolte was actually quite old at that time, over 30 - but he played young, in 1976 Nolte was 16-year old Tommy Jordache in Rich Man, Poor Man.
