This was a very emotional experience, as evidenced by the shaky vocals.
My hometown has an annual 9/11 event of remembrance wherein we honor our local heroes: emergency responders, police, fire, veterans, etc. The event planner (and my backup singer) asked me if I would perform the music this year. I don't usually do live performance beyond playing in the band in our little country church, but I knew even before that conversation ended that I needed to do this gig justice by penning some original material, centering on the far reaching impact of answering "The Call."
The Call
by Joe Class
Flashing lights and warning sounds cry out for willing courage
Life's worries climb in back as skill and training take the wheel
A neighbor, known or not, needs our support in darkest hour
Their call for help is answered, because we know how they feel
Uncertainty rides shotgun with us each and every day
And shock and grief and panic sometimes pin us to the wall
When what cannot happen...happens, and your heart and safety shatter
We make our willing sacrifice in answer to the call
Help me sing the unsung heroes, the dusty angels in boots and gloves
Knees bent to serve bear hearts that tower tall
May the voices of your village make the rafters roar above
We are where and who we are today because you answered the call
Swallowed voices and stolen choices stain the earth with blood and tears
I can no longer let my sword sleep in my hand
When influence and wealth refuse their duty of compassion
The "other" is my brother, nevermind his creed or land
We take up arms, and by opposing bend the iron will of men
Tender places bearing scars in the shape of every comerade's fall
Defending joy and liberty, the people's stolen birthright
A warrior of honor stands in answer to the call
Help me sing the unsung heroes, the dusty angels in boots and gloves
Proudly standing in the breach in freedom's wall
May the voices of your village make the rafters roar above
We are where and who we are today because you answered the call
Tired poor and huddled masses yearning only for a breath
Hope deferred and heartache the only wages to be earned
Proud citizen reduced to slave by Pharaoh or by desert
We set sail for the Promised Land before our hulls are burned
Strangers in a stranger land who dare to keep on dreaming
Foreign food and tongue and custom casting isolation's pall
While strength lives in my body, child, you'll not know cold or hunger
God protect the pilgrim patriarch who has nothing save the call
Help me sing the unsung heroes, the dusty angels in boots and gloves
No shoes, or feet, but not ashamed to crawl
May the voices of your village make the rafters roar above
We are where and who we are today because you answered the call
Help me sing the unsung heroes, the dusty angels in boots and gloves
The light of grace where shadow aims to fall
We, the voices of your village, make the rafters roar above
We are where and who we are today because you answer the call
