This story is somehow the most straightforward and predictable game story I've seen in ages, and it is full of "twists". We got: - Secret society that has been "around for centuries, controlling everything" - "Next phase of Human Evolution" - Shadow warfare "Europa wasn't a terrorist attack..." - You (the player and/or player character) are responsible for the horrible things happening in the game. - The sci-fi prison you were on was actually a secret unethical experiment for a new weapon/technology. - The final boss of the horror game has as second phase that turns into a vaguely human flesh monster. - "There's only room for one person in the escape pod. I'm sorry" self-sacrifice - "It's not over yet" sequel-baiting It's almost impressive how listing the trope twists tells you almost everything that happens in the story.

They also, in particular the first game, had permanence to the locations. In DS1 you went back and forth between areas and often revisited areas as you moved through the Ishimura. This gave a sense of it being a real place, of really moving through the ship. Callisto Protocol is just different flavors of hallways with cutscenes here and there.
@steel5897
Жыл бұрын
And also making the combat "skill based" and kind of its own mini game was a terrible decision for a horror game. If I feel like I WANT to engage enemies to get better at playing the combat then that's not a survival horror game. I should be dreading every enemy, fighting should be a last resort. Dead Space 1 was actually praised for making the player character feel like a civilian engineer with no combat experience, you were not a killing machine but rather forced to use whatever tools you can to survive. Here you're god damn marine man skillfully dodging enemy attacks like it's Punch Out.
@yewtewbstew547
Жыл бұрын
@@steel5897 I haven't played Callisto so I cant really compare like for like, but I wouldn't say Dead Space was great in that regard either. Dead Space was an RE4 style action game first and a survival horror game second. Once you learned each enemy's combat "gimmick" you could quickly dispatch most of them even with just the basic plasma cutter. And often they'd drop more ammo/currency than you used to kill them, so you'd even profit from going out of your way to engage them. Compare that to something like Resident Evil or Silent Hill, where there was never any skill element to killing enemies. In Resident Evil you'd fire your gun at a zombie and, unless you scored a 1 in 20 critical hit, it would take the same amount of handgun bullets to kill every single time. And you'd gain no resources for killing it, you'd only benefit by making the area safer to navigate by removing an enemy. So it basically becomes a game of deciding whether you want to spend resources now, and make your path through the mansion safer, or hold onto those resources in case you need them later. That dynamic is the main defining characteristic of a survival horror game, and it barely existed at all in Dead Space.

One of the big problems this game has is that all the scares and story elements are just thrown at you with no prior build up or context, it’s like they just threw a bunch of ingredients at you instead of giving you a cake. The beginning of the game is literally you crash on a planet, get imprisoned and next day there is a prison riot. You might as wel just had a text scroll saying “you are in prison, you must escape, the warden is bad” and it would do the trick as well if not better than the actual beginning

Even in the case that there were no more stories to be told, i still believe that the way a story is delivered can still make it a worthwile experience to indulge in. the grafics are amazing and i do love myself a nice view in a game. i really like games like Journey and Little Nightmares for these nice views with their more stylised artstyles, but even games like Metro: Exodus and Red Dead Redemption 2, i love the beautiful grafics. it really makes it so immersive, however for me personally it needs to have something more than graphics in the mix, since for me, a game gets old real quick if the main focus is graphics. with this game, the only thing i personally appreciate, is the graphics, which makes this game really boring in my opinion. graphics to me are like spices; it enhances the meal, but you can't just have spices and call it a dish i can't lie though the idiots buying a 4 figure piece of hardware and justifying it by showing they get 3 extra frames is beyond ridiculous to me. there is literally barely any difference between the newest and the last generation lol. good take playing on the series X.

Like the room that's full of meat-grinder stuff because that's where they decided to tutorialize environmental kills: what could this room POSSIBLY be used for, realistically? Is it a grinding apparatus to make slop for prisoners? Shouldn't there be some kind of cooking or preservation or packaging equipment in there, then? Just a little extra thought could have made it a more interesting room and led into an interesting area, like one for cooking or food serving, or a massive fridge or freezer, or food transport chutes--something. I can't put my finger on it, but maybe because they look too humanoid in their stature and movement, but also too deformed in faces that you cannot really see the person that the zombie was before? With necromorphs, on the other hand, you could see their faces torn apart by the rebirth, which was terrifying, since you could basically see the person that the necromorph was before death. But their stature (with the high hanging limbs and bones out) and movement seemed so off, that you could tell they were controlled by something alien. Anyway, those are my two cents.

They don't hit hard, and they go down easy, and that's on the background of your weapons being EXTREMELY anemic (i mean most of your fighting is done with a frigging STICK! and the guns hit like a wet noodle, what's Calisto's shotgun vs dead space's brutal exposives, chainsaws, plasma cutters, etc?)... Lastly your dude dances around them like Mike fucking Tyson unlike Issac who's constantly scared shitless and is semi useless in close quarters.
@warbossgegguz679
Жыл бұрын
I mean I just genuinely think necromorphs look significantly more Cronenbergian and inhuman than these things is the main reason + the melee gameplay makes them just overall seem like less of a threat. If you got close enough to punch a necromorph, you're already screwed. Here you literally have to get close to them. Melee can work in survival horror. Most combat in Silent Hill is melee, but SH also isn't trying to be actiony.

I like how in the beginning cutscene the animators/environment designers establish that it takes place on Europa by having one of the buildings be a café called "Europa Café". It's not as stupid as the Halo TV show renaming New Alexandria "Reach City" but still imagine if you were at a mall or a shopping district and you saw a place called "Earth Restaurant" or "Earth Clothing". When I saw all those stories coming out about how unbelievably realistic the character faces were… I knew the priorities were in the wrong place. EA was, at the beggining, really about "Electronic ARTS", many games from back in the day across different genres were spearheaded by EA (may it be in house or with another studio in hand). Really talented (if not the most talented) developers, artists, and just people involved in the making of videogames from that "golden era" were under EA's wing. We can shit all we want on EA now, but they got to the point they are now, because of many feats they undertook and succeeded at. I still play C & C, Dead Space, LOTR, and others, I still love them to death. Were did all this people go? I doubt they are still working there, seeing how much of a corrupted giant this publisher has become, but it is a fact that all those original teams are no longer working together, the same teams were all kinds of coincidences, ideas, and work got done in, haven't really translated to the modern game development scene (where everything is rushed, which is ironic since games have gotten way more expensive and harder to make).

Batman Arkham games came out before it, Vermintide 2 came out before it. There are more ways to do melee combat satisfying than just "dodge every 3 whacks".

Addendum: them Calypso developers really decided "hmmm, you know what was a good game? Blood 2: The Chosen", and then they copied the idea of throwing the same bullet sponge boss at you seventy times in a row. At least they didn't steal the idea of RNG-based weapon damage and the explosions going through walls.

It's funny that this originally was going to be a PUBG spinoff, according to the Wiki. I wish I was joking. Source: The origins of The Callisto Protocol began with the formation of Striking Distance as a studio within PUBG Corporation (now PUBG Studios) in June 2019, helmed by Glen Schofield, who had previously co-created the Dead Space series at Visceral Games. The studio was created to expand the PUBG : Battlegrounds universe by creating a narrative driven game.Schofield said that when he met with PUBG Corporation where they explained their goal to expand the PUBG narrative, he already had the concept for The Callisto Protocol in mind and presented that to them and worked with them to fit his idea into their universe. However, by May 2022, Schofield stated that the game had grown to be its own story and is no longer connected to PUBG, though there remain small nods to the latter.

So I beat the game yesterday and when he did that, my sleep deprived ass simply said “521, It’s protocol time” and then proceeded to die from laughter at the kingpin running of captain Ferris. To sum it up, Callisto is a good comedy game dressed up as a beat ‘em up zombie game.

If a game doesn't run perfectly smoothly it's a show stopper for me. I mean that's one of the most basic things they have to get right first and foremost. This never happened in Dead Space and that game is what - 13 years old.

Just a heads up to anyone deadset on running this with Raytracing-- *TURN OFF RT SHADOWS* to fix (in my case and others) tons of UE4/DXGI crashes to lockups, hickups and excessive VRAM/GPU spikes. With how glitchy the benchmark looks and how grainy some of those shadows are, I'd say it even looks better with just the reflections. Hope it helps anyone!

This game has a lot of settings to make it easier which is hilarious for a horror game, things like auto dodge and one click QTE so that when you're grabbed by enemies or the small head worms you immediately finish it expect for the long worm guys. They made possible for a 5 year old to beat this game.
