What a resource! Clean up the downed trees, clean up the blight. Man these city kids could live in a kayaking paradise! What an overlooked opportunity. DNR bought Belle Isle. But making more sense to me would be Improving these canals and making this a navigable water trail, with bike paths, fishing piers for kids, etc. OMG! What a resource! That beautiful house at 878 Ashland, just after they cross under the Ashland St. bridge -- you can tell it was originally built by someone wealthy, with that garage specifically for a boat right on the edge of the creek. But now it is falling apart and the creek is eroding everything almost up to the house. According to Zillow, it was sold two years ago along with the house next-door at 862 as one unit, so I am hoping the person who purchased it is planning on renovating it and doing something about reinforcing the shoreline with the creek so the house doesn't fall apart.

Great video I subbed! Good memories! Back in the mid-50s.school is out. Me, my buddies, and neighborhood girls, all of us aged 14 and 15 years old living in the six-mile rd. and Chalmers area. My Dad had an 18 foot Oldtown sponson canoe with a side mounted 1.7 Hp. Neptune Mighty Mite outboard motor. My Dad would drop us off at the end of Alter rd. on his way to work early in the morning with the canoe and all the food that the girls had made and would then pick us up on his way home after work. Wearing swimsuits all day and stopping at Tommy's boat rental for pop and snacks we explored every canal, then with the motor running and all six of us paddling (Yes, the canoe could handle that many 90-100 lb. girls easily) we would dodge any freighters coming and head for Peche Island. (We pronounced it peach island) We would swim off the small sand beaches for a while and then pick up the canoe and portage it across a bit of land into the canals of the island and explore there. (More private for some boy/girl fun up to a certain degree.) We also had some young friends who lived in the trailer park on the canal and had a boat and would join us at times. Would do this 3 or 4 times a month. (No computer screens and games, just pure fun and healthy trim tanned bodies!) Goodtimes!

Your video sure does bring back some great memories of my childhood! Unfortunately, the neighborhood hasn't improved, and many of the homes/seawalls have gotten more run down over the years. The start of your video takes place on Fox Creek, which ran alongside Alter Road (the dividing line between Detroit and the city of Grosse Pointe Park). I spent most of the 1970's fishing the Detroit River for walleye with my Dad. In the early days, we would rent a boat and motor from Tommy's Boat Livery (now called Coriander Kitchen and Farm) at the foot of Alter Road on Riverside Blvd. Tommy's was also a well-known bait & tackle shop to local fisherman. Local anglers referred to the canal that ran alongside Tommy's and Riverside-Lakefront East Park as simply, Tommy's Canal. Interesting fact: Back in the 50's and 60's, there was a blue flood light mounted on the side of Tommy's that was aimed down the canal toward the Detroit River. The light was turned on whenever the fish & game wardens were around to warn anglers returning from their fishing trip to make sure they were fishing by the rules. That blue light remained on the wall well after Tommy's closed in the 1980's. Today, many of my fishing buddies (from the suburbs) rent a boat slip along Fox Creek/Harbor Island to take advantage of the Detroit River's awesome spring walleye fishery Thanks again for sharing your video!

A few thoughts for anyone considering buying one of these places and fixing it up: Seawall building is expensive-there are at least three government licencing agencies you must go through before any construction can begin-then you must find someone that has experience building seawalls, with the proper equipment. An excavator is needed to lift and push the 12 foot long steel panels down, and then they are joined together and reinforced with steel I-beams behind. If the excavator can access the canal from the land side, that makes construction much easier-otherwise, the builder must bring his excavator to the site on a barge, and work from there. I just had my seawall replaced at the mouth of the Detroit river on Lake Erie-it was $30,000 for seventy feet, with easy access. Some of the other residents are now being quoted $1000 a foot for new seawall.

WOW !! Thanks so much for posting this !!! I’ve always wanted to go on a boat ride up Fox Creek Canal - but I don’t have a boat ! I live at 847 Ashland - found a ton of history on it I still need to make a video about - working tirelessly to try to save this place so everyone can see it . I love seeing all of the comments - and one of the houses you pass is right across from mine diagonally and it has a secret below the house boat entry - so it was cool to see that from the water side - thanks again for posting this it’s awesome !!!

Every Detroit / Grosse Pointe Local knows about these canals and has been there because they are on the border of Detroit / Grosse Pointe on Lake St Clair. Its the suburbanites from the outer suburbs who dont know about this kayaking gem. There is also a eclectic restaurant on this canal too.

This area of Detroit has always fascinated me, is it shocks me that an area which has access to Lake St. Clair fell into such disrepair. It is on the border of Grosse Pointe Park (the least wealthy of the 5 Grosse Pointes, but still desirable), which is on the left side of the canal for most of this video. I have not been down to the canals for years, but I am told by a friend of mine who is an active boater that this area is now rebounding. I would love to see it thrive once again.

I wasn't expecting that gorgeous trimaran with the red trim on the other side of that canal bridge. It even matches the house it's parked next to!

I've lived in the area, driven around there, and never seen this behind the thick vegetation. Great sightseeing.

Fun fact : this canal was used by rum runners during prohibition. The Purple Gang had some houses over here for this reason. Perfect spot too.

this was also one of the places that was used by the real Underground Railroad for escaping slaves. Also used by Weather Under Ground and anyone seeking to walk out of America or sail out through Detroit! ( professor emerita-EMU)

Whoa, that's bad ass. If there's any place to rebuild in Detroit it's there.

Very enjoyable ride..! Saw two of our old family boats, a Marinette (built right here in LouYouAll), and a ChrisCraft Cavalier. And the Piver trimaran is looking good too.! I predict the area will slowly recover as water rats with a little cash decide to fix up an old place...

so sad to see the run-down parts. Glad to see that some areas are kept up!

I never knew about the canals. Detroit needs to make the criminals clean up and repair the canals. Offer school credits for cleaning the canals. It needs to be safe

Such a cool video. I like how you just let it roll with very little commentary. Very immersive.

That old wooden boat on the lift was interesting. Probably hasn’t moved in 60 years.

I used to live at 463 Ashland between Essex and Korte. Neighborhood kids used to swim in that Canal! This part of Detroit's East Side has always been ca hidden Gem! 🏙 💎✨️

One thing about it, if they don’t do any upkeep, Mother Nature WILL reclaim the area

Never knew that existed. I imagine if their economy ever comes back the city could clean it up and those properties would be pretty valuable.
