The CANALS of Ocean Shores, WA: Ocean Shores, WA has 23 miles of interconnecting fresh water lakes and canals. The many canals traverse throughout Ocean Shores, and include the following:
- The Grand Canal is the largest canal and extends from Downtown Ocean Shores along Pt Brown Ave to its south-end at the South-End Grand Canal Park, which is where the spillway out into Grays Harbor Bay is located.
- The Bell Canals are named as such because they are shaped as a 'bell'. They extend off the Grand Canal at the Pt Brown Ave Bridge.
- The Oyhut Canal extends on both sides of Lake Minard. The northern part of the Oyhut Canal connects into the Bell Canals.
- The Fishhook ("Bayou") Canal gives access from the canals into Duck Lake, which extends from the south-end of the Grand Canal winding through the canopy of trees into Duck Lake. I nickname this canal the "Jungle Cruise" because of the beautiful canopy of alder trees.
- The Blue Heron Bayou Canal extends like a hook off of the Grand Canal and ends at the Skookumchuck Park. It is named after the blue heron that lives along this canal.
- The Bass Canal connects into Duck Lake.
- The "Finger" Canals are the miscellaneous smaller canals throughout the fresh water passages.
Enjoy fishing, boating (no wake), kayaking, and canoeing (no jet skis are allowed). All of these canals were man-made when Ocean Shores was platted back in the 1960s. Houses are built along these waterways, which gives property owners direct access from their own docks.
