In May 1993, York City Football Club reached Wembley for the very first time in their history with a 1-0 aggregate victory over Bury in the Barclays League Division Three play-off semi-finals.
A solitary headed goal by York-born Gary Swann sent a packed Bootham Crescent into delirium as Alan Little’s side went through to the Final to face Dario Gradi’s Crewe Alexandra at Wembley.
To make the most of the day, right-back Andy McMillan invested in a camcorder which winger Tony Canham took hold of to film an amazing behind the scenes look at the events of Wembley 1993. This footage was thought to have been lost over the years, but has now been made available to publish for City fans to enjoy. This stunning material tells the story of the players’ experience of a massive landmark in club history.
The Minstermen went on to win the game 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, Gary Swann scoring once again, as Wembley 1993 went down as one of the great occasions in the history of York City FC.
PART 6 - THE VICTORY PARADE contains pictures taken by the players from the open top bus of the victory parade through York City centre the day after the magnificent Wembley triumph.
