I feel your pain, Carlos! Great video. The only thing I disagree with is the mini XLRs. For me, that's a plus because it makes the overall size smaller and there's no sound quality sacrifice. :) A year ago, after months of research and debating over the C70 vs the FX6 or A7SIII (and others), I finally pulled the trigger on the C70. I ended up being disappointed at first. I was looking for a run and gun multi-use camera that looked great for most any purpose. I ended up finding it to be a little heavier than I had hoped (the Zacuto Gratical HD added a chunk as well). The way I shoot is mostly hand held using an EVF. For my bad back, it was a little too front heavy for long use that way. I wanted the C70 to be my 5DIII on steroids. I love the intimate handling of the 5DIII. It's tight and everything I need to tweak is available so I don't have to pull my eye away from the EVF. That's something the Blackmagic's Pocket series has nailed. Their menu screens and button placement are excellent. Canon's menus are inching in that direction, but they've got a ways to go. I tried using the C70 on my Ronin RS2 and was not happy with the results. And the autofocus was underwhelming. Way below my expectations. I also don't like how it handles S&Q. You can't just turn it on and off and have it remember the previous resolution. You have to manually change it back. Unbelievably annoying. My Sony FS7 is WAY better in that regard. Oh, and let's not forget that the autofocus doesn't work in all modes. Nor does auto-ISO for that matter. And I hate how the ND buttons are arranged. I'd prefer a dial like the FS7 or buttons that I can easily access when running handheld without taking my eye off the EVF. Don't even get me started on the handle that doesn't have a record button (thankfully there's a 3rd party solution, but still). I even tried to return the C70, but B&H wouldn't have it, so I was forced to use this stupid camera for an important Kickstarter promo video. You know what? It looked fantastic. It looked so good, I didn't even color grade it, which is crazy. I used straight color transform and called it a day. (I was a little pressed for time.) I keep meaning to go back and give it a proper grade, but every time I look at the edit I lose the desire. I used it over the past year for mostly traditional talking head stuff and I am still disappointed in the autofocus, but I'm also using EF lenses with the adapter, so it's not the ideal setup. When the update added RAW I filmed a series of web commercials in RAW and they look fantastic (for me). Of the cameras I use consistently (Pocket cams, FS7, A7R), the C70 looks great the easiest. The dynamic range is legit. When I have to look at footage form my other cameras and then go back to looking at the C70 footage, the DR jumps out at you. It is very impressive. You can also shoot fairly high ISO without distracting noise as well. I recently got the R5C, which is actually closer to what I wanted the C70 to be. It's my run & gun camera now. Love the form factor and the quality holds up nicely to the C70. Not quite as good, but works fine in the same timeline. Battery life is garbage though! The combo of both cameras is a very versatile, high quality pair. I look forward to Canon one day offering basically a proper full frame C70. I'd be all over that. Moral of the story is that I've accepted the C70's shortcomings and have come to appreciate the excellent quality and workflow when used properly. Still waiting for the holy grail camera that does everything perfectly!

Many of the same issues here, but then I get into post and am always happy. My c70 gets paired with an alexa mini, a c500mk 2, ect... It holds up better than expected. I am trying out DJI's Lidar Focus Rs to help with some of the run and gun focus issues, and would love for canon to update the camera at some point with a true full frame and thier hybrid autofocus system, it'd be an instant buy for me! Canon doesn't do great auto focus when compared to Sony, but I just love the footage more in the end.

I always enjoy your perspective! I’ve been using the C70 extensively on corporate and documentary work since it was released. Would love 8K, but that would be for me - my clients wouldn’t know the difference. For shooting stage work - the battery life and dynamic range are fantastic. But I use an Sony FS5 for zooming, while the Canon holds down the master shot. Love love love the C70 for talking head interviews. Simple partial cage for accessories. Hi Carlos, I fully agree with you. One minor thing is the small live view panel. It is okay, but a weak build rather loose in the suspension. It is not in line with the quality of the C70. I know of a user who had to send it back for repair. Another thing is, never use Clog2 in low light situations. You get a lot of noise. Neither use Clog3 in same situation as some beleive to be better of. Stay at base ISO and use external light. If not, better use Wide DR or even Rec709 if there is no DR, more than a 4 - 6 stops. I made this mistake a few times and had, after denoise in Resolve to run Topaz Enhanced Video to get rid of the noise and artifacts. So never shoot Log in low light situations. I have to see if it is better with RAW, not tried yet. So a DR of 16+ looks very nice and it is in normal conditions, but on the contrary there are less (too few) bits or values for the dark parts of your scene. With my BMPCC 4K and 13 stops this drawback is less opportune. A lot of people opt for the R5c, due to formfactor and 8K and more, but forget all the things you mentioned up and clear in your video and you did this as an experienced user in fact makes the step back after seen the real benefits of the incredible good Canon C70, even afterwards. My credo is: 'feel before you begin'.

6k and 8k often tend to look "digital" and over-sharp... the c70 with it's super 35mm sensor and soft rolloff but clear image is the closest thing to traditional 35mm film cameras that all blockbusters used to use...it produces the most "film - look" out there outside of Arri etc that studios use - that film look is what most filmmakers have been trying to achieve since the mass switch over to digital cameras

Great take Carlos. The problem I have with Canon currently is that they have been super quiet with the C300 Mark III and C500 Mark II. I saw a C500 Mark II on eBay for sale for $12.5K on eBay, and thought that it should have been close to that price upon release. Even though Canon Ergonomics is better, I appreciate Sony's roadmap.

Use a C70 pretty much every day for work. Couldn’t go without the internal NDs, timecode, and 10 bit color. DGO sensor looks great under challenging lighting conditions. My only quibble that I wish it was sharper out of the box. It’s definitely a pleasing kind of softness but I find I always need to add a little sharpening in post. But I find it’s the best camera for my workflow. Mobile, fast, and reliable. Now if only we could get the R5 AF into the C70…

Excellent as always. In our studio we have the C500 Mark 2 and I used the C70 for two months and enjoyed it. I'd like to get one myself. The only thing with Canon in general, and this is just my own opinion, not a declaration, is that Canon's colors tend to be orange on the skin tones and I keep having to cool them down. I noticed in our studio we have the Arri Skypanels and with them being set to 5600K when white balancing the C500 Mark 2, it said 4400K was what I was to set the cameras to which makes sense. The tendency of whites and skin tone going towards Orange on Canon has been my only real gripe, as I like the color on the Arri cameras aesthetically and their skin tones. But your videos have helped tremendously in the past with getting the colors much improved on my Cinema EOS experience. Thanks for the hard work.

I admire your honesty Carlos and so I want to be too - I thought you were absolutely crazy to sell the C70 and go to the R5; I couldn't understand the logic as I am a C70 owner and the things you list that you don't like with the C70 are ALL the same issues with the R5 and R5C, and some of the other things are really not what I expected to be big enough reasons to sell the C70. And buying an 8k camera as a priority when there is no published 8k video pretty much anywhere is odd. HD and 4k are the standard and if one buys an 8k camera because you want to reframe 4k and HD, maybe more training would be a better use of money - I'm not being rude; but 8k and crop isn't a viable substitute for framing well. But I would say that this is a really great video as you have had the unique position to have been on both sides with Canon cameras and the fact you are coming back to the C70 speaks volumes on just how good that camera is for professional work. So I salute you young man! :-)

So in relation to super 35 vs full frame - from the perspective of an over 30 year pro still photographer now dabbling in videography, please explain the phenomenon of "full frame" relative to video? I understand that sometimes you need a very wide field of view for a certain situation, but in my testing, of my c70 with and without the focal reducer, when used at the same field of view and the same aperture, I see no difference in the video at all ( tested at f2 and f8). Using the canon RF15-35 has always given me a wide enough image for my particular needs. So is the only advantage being able to get a wider field of view if necessary and maybe slightly more light on the sensor when shot wide open using the focal reducer? Thanks and really appreciate your content!

while I can't speak for everyone, I believe that FF became popular because it allowed more people to see their depth of field and work with fewer lights...basically giving people a fast track way of making their productions look like they had bigger budgets. Oh and of course working in smaller spaces FF has major advantages.

Just to make things more complicated, I'm also tempted by the Komodo after playing with some RAW footage. The IQ is just so filmic/organic.
