Karen was a natural. She didn’t need singing lessons. She didn’t win on American Idol. She was the opposite of how Brittney Spears got her start. Karen was born to sing and make people happy. I've always known that my whole life since I first heard Karen's voice probably around 1972 and I was still a kid. Nice to feel validated by those legends. True music lovers "get it" about how special Karen's voice was, as Richard said it was "perfect in every way". So beautiful and mature and effortless right from such a young age. In 1970, I was 6 years old. This was my mother's favorite song and she used to sing it to me whenever it came on the radio. She told me that this song reminded her of me. Her words made me feel special, loved and invincible! A mother's words can give a child the power to be anything! That is what my mother gave me. In a few short months, I will be 60 years old and far removed from the days when this song was on the radio. When I was 6, I would often wonder what my life would be like at age 30, and what kind of adult I might be. And, here I am today, well past 30 and barely able to look into a rear view that is nothing more than a mixed bag of tragedy and joy. But, it also makes me think about where we are today and I wonder if any of us have truly moved forward. And then, I think how I would trade my best day today for my worst day back then. How, with all of our technical advancements and modern gadgets, I still prefer the simplicity of the '70s. A time when my mother's smile felt like a warm and safe blanket. It's funny how much one song can affect a person. I don't think children today have it like we did. That's what I think, but I sincerely hope that I am wrong.

The fact that she sings so beautifully AND plays the drums puts her on a totally different level! Singing drummers get my utmost respect. I still remember hearing this song for the first like it was yesterday. I was just a 4yr old kid but fell in love with her voice. Ahhhh the 70’s! Such an awesome time to have been a kid!

So true. Had they not moved her off the drums and to the front, she may have still been with us. Someone body shamed her after a TV performance when she was in front of the band and that appears to be when it all started.

OMG, this generation will never know how much the Carpenters shaped the music industry. Karen & Richard were absolutely a wonder. These videos take me back & back & back. I hope that Richard knows how much he & his sister meant to so many. Growing old sucks but we have some awesome memories.

She died because her mother was a quaalude popping obsessive compulsive cleaner who took Karen to the doctor to lose weight when she was 16. Karen inherited her mother's obsessive compulsive traits and reacted to the one flaw her family could clearly identify in her. She was prone to weight gain. The only thing the industry contributed was probably her expanded access to weightloss drugs she should never have been prescribed. Much like Elvis.
