When I was a hard rocking dude in the 70s and 80s it was always embarrassing when a carpenter song came on and your Led Zeppelin Buddies would laugh at me for listening to them but secretly I loved them and were transported to a special place whenever I heard her voice with Richard's piano arrangements. But now I wear my affection for them as a badge of honor. They were every bit as much great musicians as any super group rock band in fact in some ways better. Don't get me wrong I love my hard rock and always will but the carpenters just have a special place in my heart and are in a category pretty much all by themselves which most rock and roll bands can't claim except maybe Steely Dan and a few other great bands but the Carpenters were truly special and one of a kind.

But I would never admit to my friends I liked the Carpenters when I was young, but nowadays I don't really care what anyone thinks. She really is the most talented female vocalist of our time and Richard was a genuis at picking and arranging songs for her.

Have you personally experienced this and know that it’s Karen, or are you repeating what you heard someone else has said. If she had the backbone to insist on staying behind where she was comfortable, she wouldn't have been at the mercy of other peoples' opinions. There is a deeper story here, this comes from early childhood rejection from her Mother and feelings of worthlessness. She looked so bad in some of those pictures that it hurts to see them. Her pain is so evident that it takes my breath away. She was getting better and had put weight on in the last six months but her heart was damaged from an ongoing intake of megadoses of thyroid medication. Just taking a slight bit too much kills my appetite and my ability to sleep. I can't fathom what a huge amount did to her. Dear sweet girl deserved so much more.

@@lorimiller4301 She was also born in 1950 - a whole different era - even before women's lib of the 70's. In a traditional family she would have been expected to be compliant and not make any "unladylike" fuss. She was likely burying resentment along with a host of other unladylike feelings and they gnawed away at her from the inside out. I was dx'd with anorexia right after KC passed. It was her passing that brought attention to my tendency to get too thin. Saying it's complicated is an understatement.

The Carpenters have to be (for me) the most talented, inspiring, fantastic pop band of all time. At times they are an orchestra. Their songs always have uplifting meaning and they delight the ear with candy-harmony. They never fail to surprise either. Just when you think you know them, here comes something unexpected. Never boring-loud, always delightful. Let some of today's monotone mainstream performers just try to memorize the words to just one of those medleys------they just couldn't, and the Carpenters have MANY medleys. The beautiful, the sensitive, the delicate, and the intelligent are often with us for only too short a time due to the ugly, the boorish, the blunt, and the dull.
