Karen died a month before her 33rd birthday in 1983. After a long-term treatment and some hospitalization, she had gained over 20 pounds, and her heart (weakened from years of malnutrition) simply couldn't handle the added weight, and she died of a heart attack in her parents' home. (She had spent the night over, and she and her mother were going to shop for appliances for Karen's penthouse in Studio City.) Richard truly understood Karen's voice, and his arrangements always brought out the best in her. She didn't have an exceptionally wide range, but she instinctively knew how to use it, and the lower end of her register was especially rich and warm. Her delivery was also natural and there was an emotional depth without resorting to growling or shouting. There are many clips on KZitem of their performances, but (as they were--mostly--prior to the MTV era) there are not a lot of live videos. "Only Yesterday" is one that is available as an official video, and so is "Rainy Days and Mondays". There are a lot of fan-produced videos out there (using the audio tracks from their albums with montages of still photos or lyrics); you might want to look at "Now", which was the last song Karen ever recorded (it was on an album released after she died). It is possibly the most moving of all of her performances,; what makes it so impressive was that it was simply a run-though recording for the instrumentalists to familiarize themselves with the song. The song was written by Paul Williams and Roger Nichols, the same composers of this song and "Rainy Days and Mondays".

The sad thing was, she had such terrible self esteem, with her parents and everyone else always holding up her brother as the gifted one, as he was, but on production and arrangements. She was the vocal talent, much more so than Richard. She never saw herself as beautiful or especially talented and, when they started saying she was too fat for television (Ridiculous!!!) she began her downward spiral into anorexia. She was so talented and beautiful, but sadly got used to being in the background and couldn't deal with being in the limelight.

Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders once said that Karen Carpenter's voice was the best female voice ever recorded. If you listen to the Pretenders or even Chrissie's more recent solo releases, you can hear that same pure quality in her voice as well. A beautiful voice (like Ann Wilson's and Karen Carpenters and Chrissie Hyndes) can speak directly to your soul.
