imho, Ric Ocasek is the brain of The Cars. Benjamin Orr (RIP), the face and voice. David Robinson and Greg Hawks are the backbone. And EE? Elliot Easton is the heart and soul of The Cars. he is monstrously talented, he can work a stage without stomping on any of his band mates and as you can see he can make rock and role faces with the best of them. The RRHOF finally got what Cars fans have known since the release of their first album. They are THE REAL DEAL!!

They played all the old favorites plus some new songs. Right in the beginning some dude yells "Thank God it's Elliot Easton!!!" and Elliot proceeded to demonstrate why he is probably the most underrated guitarist of all time... He had to be pushing 60, but he could still rip it up and hit all the great hooks.

That's what I greatly prefer to read from a Cars fan. A lot of people out there are focused on just one member or another. The Cars have never been a band to air their laundry in public, but sadly, some so-called "fans" have made mountains out of molehills, to create ugly factoids. It has gotten under my skin enough that I've been researching pretty hard, and so far, I have found NO reputable source that says they were any more dysfunctional than ANY other band. The magic was in all 5 of them!

I think Ben could have sang this one as well as Ric. I _don't_ often say that; I think they did a very good job of working out who would sing which song. I'm not one of those maniacs who think Ben shoud have sang everything, or the majority of songs, instead of Ric. (In fact, when I see people say "Ben sang most of their hits", I bring out the statistics, which show that statement couldn't be more wrong.) I just think this little throwaway tune could have been more fun with Ben on vocals. Enjoy the moment . . . Don't Cha Stop!

I actually heard a deejay mention recently that Drive was the only song Benjamin sang out of all the Cars music. Ridiculous since he was the one that sang not only the most successfully commercial song written by O'Casek (Drive) but the first song that led to the Cars becoming noticed and given an album deal. To those of us who remember and were working in the business at that time, Maxanne sent a tape around to the stations because she liked Benjamin and his voice...if not, it could well be The Cars might still be playing gigs like the Ground Round, we'll never know. I like Ric's quirky voice a lot but near the end he chose to sing the majority of the songs which meant good ones were only mediocre since the guy really is not a good vocalist and will never be as good as Benjamin. Just because you write a song doesn't mean you have to sing it...a good example of this is I Will Always Love You, written and sung by Dolly Parton but when Whitney did a cover on it, it took off to number one. Too bad no one explained this to Ric. Also, it has been said by all of the group in interviews that each member composed their own part of the song and each member did this brilliantly. In my opinion, Greg and Elliot are brilliant musicians. Interestingly, songs on the second album Benjamin was working on before his death are really good, even better than his first effort. Some of the solo efforts by O'Casek are good and he is a fabulous musician, but I don't think any one member was ever greater by himself than when the Cars were a group...they were one of the best groups ever.

Jon B huh? That’s entirely wrong. Are you a long time fan? I am. The Cars all agreed- there was no hierarchy in the group. Each member had their own strengths and the others respected that. Ric wrote songs. He sung in a more stylized way- but when he wanted the song to be more melodic -more range, he admitted Ben was the better singer/interpreter. Elliot - a graduate of Berkeley - had prodigal talent. His 12 second solos are what makes him so great. These aren’t 17 minute hippy jams. The Cars were a hybrid of poppy radio ready songs - but added a twist of the experimental - influenced by the new technology - where kraftwerk & DEVO introduced these spaced out, robotic sounds for a whole track. The Cars injected snippets of those futuristic detached sounds They also strived for precision- something you can produce in the studio with all the new ( then) technology. Few bands can sound not only as good- but in sense- even better because on stage is where their happiest. Elliot made remark / “I work for free for 2 hours on stage / it’s the other 22 hours he gets paid for. While all were pieces of the puzzle -imo- Greg Hawkes mastery of the keyboard ( and he played like 6/7! Other instruments! that grounded their instantly recognizable sound. He makes moving in stereo feel like deep space 9, l love watching him because he’s so enthusiastic - another of his highlights is bye bye love”. The ultra quirky “I’m in touch with your world “ he is somewhat hilarious- playing several instruments/ including one that looks like a can opener and a whistle. A WHISTLE!!!lol. Gotta mention David Robinson-subtle precision- he has said he liked being in the back. So JB, I gotta respectfully say..,you don’t know what you’re talking about. The Cars I’m fact we’re probably thee most egoless group ever. None bought into the rock god hype. They were superb musicians, down to earth family guys , who just happen to be rock stars to the world. RIP Ric & Benjamin/many hearts are hurting. Peace 🦋
