Helicopters are extremely useful during military operations, carrying everything from cargo to wounded soldiers. However, not all helicopters are created equal.
Some helicopters, such as the Boeing CH-47 Chinook, are much more in demand. The Chinook is renowned as the workhorse of the sky and it’s the go-to transport helicopter for roughly 20 armies across the world. So why is it so popular?
Despite being nearly twice the size of a typical helicopter, the Chinook has compact, very powerful engines and a tandem-rotor design that allows it to soar through the skies at up to 180 mph (290 km/h). But that’s not all.
The Chinook can take off with 24,000 lbs (10,886 kg) of cargo in its 228 sq ft (21 sq m) hold. It features an extremely useful loading ram that allows all manner of cargo to be easily transported including Humvees.
What other features does this specialized chopper have? How was it engineered? What is the science and technology that lies behind it? We answer all of these questions and more, as well as show you video footage of the Chinook in action.
