I am “torn” as to how I should feel towards ghouls. After all, Pickman has become a kind of imaginary pal to me, and he is certainly a ghoul of some import in the Dream Cycle. And Randolph Carter managed to make alliances with ghouls, perhaps not as easily as he did with Cats- for, a ghoul is…a GHOUL.

Do you have stories or urban legends there about beings like this? The way we have dogmen and Sasquatch here in U.S., and Transylvania has vampures? Or did the author just make it up? The idea of were-pigs instead of werewolves is kind of fascinating! I've known many Persian or Iranian people, but they were very professional and straitlaced; not the kind of people I could ask, " Do you have any tales about werepigs in your country?"

The ethnocentrism evident in some weird tales is very real and unfortunate. It's really cool you look past the ignorance and see the wonder that different ethnicities and cultures inspired. A great example of this is Algernon Blackwood's The Wendigo, which is frankly one of the scariest and most accurate portrayals of the Native American monster - brilliant interpretation by Horror Babble, BTW. Pity Blackwood chose to appropriate the tale so completely while presenting the culture the legend is from as savage rather than acknowledging the genius of the source.

I live in the Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania, the nice Indians lived in terror of the more savage tribes . There a cupola windows in attics for watching out for raiders and The Bloody Rock on River road where many where be headed and or chased of Campbells ledge where a few were chased off a cliff. Sullivan’s trail and lots more. It wasn’t like 📺 Hollywood tv. Pretty nasty stuff I forgot all the tribal names and how to spell them. Our history is bloody and censored for obvious reasons. So, if you just write them as "ghouls", you write a story about blaming immigrants on any disappearance and go gun them down. I know a lot of the stories you post here are quite old and as such have some elements that are outdated, but this one was particularly odious in this regard.

As you said it’s quite old. Eighty nine years is quite a long time ago. I too had a “reaction.” I felt the same way reading W. Somerset Maugham. Then I thought of the lessons we could learn. These types of stories can help show just how things were. How far we’ve come and what we still need to work on. Besides being a creepy ghoul story.
