Autumn in the northern hemisphere starts in a couple of days. Autumn Equinox, Northern Hemisphere Thursday, September 22, 2022, at 8:03 pm CDT This corresponds to Friday, September 23, 2022, at 01:03 UTC
Spring Equinox, Starts in the Southern Hemisphere (Australia, New Zealand, South America, southern Africa) at the same time- Friday, September 23, 2022, at 01:03 UTC
The equinoxes occur in March and September and mark when the Sun is exactly above the Equator. This makes day and night equal in length. And you can see the terminator line becoming roughly north-south
The videos below show the changing of the seasons over the past few years. From July 1, 2020, to September 19, 2022.
The animation was created by using sampled HRIT imagery once per day from my station image server, from 37,332 color images, at the time when the sun was casting a shadow along the equator at approximately the same point each day. You can also see quite well the sun reflecting off the Pacific, moving north to south and vice versa in relation to the tilt of the earth and the shifting seasons.
Meteorological Seasons are calculated a bit differently.
According to the meteorological definition, the seasons begin on the first day of the months which include the equinoxes and solstices. In the Northern Hemisphere, for example,
-spring runs from March 1 to May 31;
-summer runs from June 1 to August 31;
-fall (autumn) runs from September 1 to November 30; and
-winter runs from December 1 to February 28 (February 29 in a leap year).
