So when we first thought up this idea of navigating the longest road in the world we both didn’t comprehend the incredible wonders we would see and experience - only a few weeks in and here we are; The Alaskan Hwy aka ‘The ALCAN’.
The ALCAN is a 2224 km hwy constructed during World War 2, stretching from Dawson Creek BC Canada (Mile 0) and crossing through the Yukon into Alaska and finishing up at Delta Junction. There were beautiful lakes, we camped a few nights at Muncho Lake where we enjoyed a stunning kayak, feeling like we had just entered into a postcard. Then a few yummy relaxing days camped by The Liard Hot Springs. We did a little side trip up to Dawson City, a quirky town famous for the gold rush and a town stuck in time - we loved it so much we stayed 3 nts. Rich in history and tales the locals still tell today, not to mention testing the legendary Sour Toe Cocktail. ( dawsoncity.ca/sourtoe-cocktail-club/)!! We are now members! 🤣
A little side trip from our side trip we journeyed along the Dempster Hwy to Tombstone National Park. As there were wildfires about we were faced with smoky landscapes… but could still enjoy the beauty the area offered. We journeyed along the Top of The World Hwy making our way into Alaska and visited the quirky little village of Chicken, yes that’s right a town dedicated to all things 'chicken'! We then joined back onto the Alcan and finished the trip at Delta Junction. Seeing lots of wildlife along the way….. black bears, moose with babies, bison and Caribou aka reindeer… The landscape is forever changing you can not capture the vastness of it….. simply a far away and beautiful land. The journey had begun…..
